Our trip to Cabo was almost spur of the moment. A travel website sent a promo price that included nonstop airfare from San Francisco to Cabo, transfers to and from the hotel/airport, and 4 nights all-inclusive at the Tesoro. The total cost for my girlfriend and I was under $1000. We couldn't pass it up.

And then imagine my horror when I read TripAdvisor and saw all of the bad reviews from earlier this year. I was really worried about the trip and had little to no positive expectations going in...

That said, I had a great time at the Tesoro. The nonstop flight was about 3 hours, just enough time for a movie and a soda. The airport at Cabo was simple to get through... if you do have a shuttle waiting from the Tesoro, it will be under EPIC services. I probably should put the following in CAPS and you'll thank me for the following information:

When you get off the airplane, go through customs, and then exit the security section, follow the exit signs. Do not stop to talk to anyone. If they say they have a great deal on something, ignore them. If they ask if you already have a shuttle and when you say yes, they say "oh, you have to check in here", don't listen to them. THEY ARE LYING. I wanted to punch the guy as he lied to my face. Instead, my girlfriend encouraged me to just continue to walk on past them and out to the shuttle. The shuttle was nice, air conditioned. The ride to the Tesoro is a good 40 minutes, maybe more with traffic. Just sit back and enjoy the ride. I tipped the driver a dollar. Don't forget TONS of $1 bills. Bring at least 30-40 of them.

Checking in at the Tesoro was easy. Just walked up to the front desk, handled them my information, and they put us into room 538. This was a standard room, but it was more than enough for my girlfriend and I. I did not have a balcony and it was right next to the waiting room for the 5th floor elevators. Some people might dislike this, but I'm a fan of being close to the elevators... I hate having to walk down a hallway for a mile every time I go and exit my room. There are stairs next to the elevators that are pretty easy to use as well.

They did offer to check us into a "junior suite upgrade" but I didn't bite. The couple after us did inquire and they said it would be an additional $20 a day. To be honest, that's not a bad deal, as I saw a few of the junior suites and they were BIG with tons of extra room.

Another good bit of information. The person next to the check-in area DOES NOT WORK FOR THE HOTEL. She called our room three times, informing us that she had a "welcoming package" for us. Yeah, right. Luckily, I read TripAdvisor and found out that this was just a way for her to try to make you sit through some 3 hour timeshare meetings for a free fishing trip. It's not worth my time. On the other hand, a couple we met did sit through the 3 hour timeshare from 8 am to 11 am and got an all-day fishing trip out of it. They were pressured repeatedly to buy a timeshare and the seller kept on lowering the price for them. They kept on saying no and then eventually were "allowed" to leave. They actually did this twice... To each their own.

We get to the room and it's a standard hotel "club med" room. Bathroom with shower/tub combo as you walk in. Bed in the middle of the room. TV with only 13 chans but some decent movie chans... that you'll get sick of after 2 days. Decent view of the pool and marina. The airconditioning worked fine. They actually came by to check on it for us, just in case. I told them that it was fine. The bed is quite firm but by the time we were ready to go to bed, I would have fallen asleep on the floor pretty easily.

The pool is nice, albeit a bit crowded. The people are... interesting, as the Tesoro seems to cater to a different type of customer than I normally see at the club med. More blue collar and tons of families, some of which told me that it was their first family vacation. I found that a bit odd.

The drinks were good. If you like hard alcohol, there's a charge for the jim beam level of drinks. I stuck with diet cokes (in cans from the pool and eating bars) and an occasional beer (Tecate, I think). We had lunch (and one breakfast) at the main eating locale by the pool. The host is a great guy, very kind and responsible. He's a bit slow with the service at times, but he's a good person and would always bring extra bottled waters throughout the meal. Nice touch.

The food at the main eating locale isn't that bad. My girlfriend and I found out that they will grill up chicken with onions and peppers for you on the range. We did this every single lunch! Add in some burning hot tortillas and the best pico de gallo I've had in a long time (my girlfriend said the guac was great), and we were loving it. Just a great lunch every single time with the Fajitas.

We settled into a routine for dinner. We'd make reservations at downstairs establishment (part of the all-inclusive plan) for 8 pm. Around 6:30 pm, we'd head to the bar right outside our dinner and have a few... ok, more than a few. At 8 pm, we'd go to dinner, have some additional fajitas (they were good), fresh mahi mahi grilled with garlic sauce, more chips and pico de gallo, tortilla soup, and everything else under the sun. The waiters were very kind and responsible. One waiter (Antonio) was especially nice. He spoke about his son throughout the meal with such pride. On our 3rd night, his son actually showed up at the hotel at closing time and Antonio rushed him over to meet us. Great people.

After dinner, we stumbled back to the bar where we had our pre-dinner drinks. One night there was karaoke led by the Tesoro entertainment staff at the bar. Another they played Jenga (with drinks if you lost). There was also music videos (new hip-hop with some latin tracks) playing during this time. People stopped by for a few drinks on their way out into town and some never made it out. Our bartender was also named Antonio. We tipped him $5 the first night (and pretty much the same every other night) and for our 2nd night, he upgraded me from blah rum to bacardi gold. Not the best, but very much appreciated. We went through a lot of it.

The bar would close at 11:30 and we'd usually head to bed around that time. One night we went out to the clubs. Good stuff, but probably would have been a little more exciting if I were single. Still, it's a little pointless to go out after having free drinks all day at the Tesoro. Might as well rest up for the early morning the following day!

There was also free internet at the hotel, which was a nice added bonus. I can't rate this hotel "excellent" as I feel that it's not a 5 star hotel by anyone's imagination. That said, it's an excellent value and I would go back there for the same deal in a year or two.

We had dinner with another couple the first night, adding two to our reservation. There were other interesting, friendly people at the Tesoro throughout our trip. It was fun and social.

With any hotel experience, there will be complications. Either the room won't be ready... the food won't be good one night... the air conditioning won't work for a while... things happen. I don't believe you should judge an establishment on such a small snapshot of time.

That said, this positive review is held to the same standard. I would recommend the value of the hotel and as I said, I'd stay here again and would recommend that others do as well. Just be sure to go in with tempered expectations and you'll be pleasantly surprised!

We were a group of 4 guys in their mid-20s (2 per room) who had all just finished taking the bar exam and looking to have a good time for a reasonable price, and we found it.

We stayed in the Jr. Suites, which were nice. The ones we stayed in overlooked the pool. The suites themselves looked like they hadn't been updated in about 10 years, but they were quite clean and well-kept. The lights over the 2 beds in one suite didn't work, but we didn't bother to even go to the front desk because the other lighting was sufficient - besides, why would you be sitting in your room in Cabo? The air conditioning was more than sufficient and the water pressure/temperature was fine, as were the amenities. Was it the spotless antisceptic atmosphere of the Bellagio or brand-new Hilton? No, but it was clean enough. The beds were a little hard.

The pool was fine, but not spectacular. The water was the perfect temperature, but the pool was a little small for a hotel of this size. It never was crowded when we were there, but I can imagine that it could get that way. From outside it looks a little outdated because it has been fitted with a plastic liner over (presumably) concrete for safety, and the liner has faded to a light green. The water clenliness is comparable to that of your average hotel/apartment pool. There is also a swim up bar.

The location was very nice. The hotel is located right on the Marina and right in the middle of town. Although it is not located on a beach, the hotel provides a free water taxi (5 minute ride) every hour to and from the beach from 9am to 5pm. Additionally, you could hire a water taxi to take you there $3 at any time or walk it (25 minutes via beach/marina, 15 minutes via streets). Unless you are unable to, I reccomend walking back at least once as it is a great way to explore all of the shops, restaurants, and bars on the marina. As a result, we did not really miss the convenience of being on beachfront property.

The greatest advantages of the location are the 10 second walk to the Marina (for easy access to Lover's Beach, booze cruises, etc., as well as the Marina-front bars which are very pleasant), and the accessibility of the town and the nightlife. All of the local hotspots (El Squid Roe, Cabo Wabo, Giggling Marlin) are within a 10 minute walk, as are the local shops and restaurants. I for one enjoy taking at least 1 afternoon off from the beach to explore the locale and found this hotel was most convenient for those purposes. The fact that we didn't have to take a taxi (which can range from $10-$20 per ride outside of the town) was wonderful. It also gave us great access to the nightlife which my friends and I took full advantage of (and were subsequently able to stumble home safely!)

We decided to take advantage of the all-inclusive package. All of the meals were average - neither fantastic nor horrible. There is a fairly wide variety of food offered, including some made-to-order food (omlettes, burgers, roasts, etc.) as well as your standard faire for a buffet. Now, if you are unreasonably picky, with your food, you may not like the food at the hotel (or in Mexico, for that matter), but we consider ourselves pretty average and enjoyed it. In the alternative, the hotel offers a discount at the sit-down restaurant in the lobby. Since we didn't try it, I can't attest to prices, quality, service, etc. The beers and drinks were cold and strong and the staff catered to please.

The only 2 downsides were that (when we arrived), there were limited drinks/food on the beach because of a newly-implemented "ticket plan" where each guest was given three tickets for the day. Although we scammed our way around it, we found it to be a minor inconvenience. However, I think they were elimitating the "limited" tickets idea as we were leaving anyway.

Additionally, the staff wouldn't let us bring outside guests into our rooms after 10pm. Again, we were able to defeat the system with a little inginuity, so I'm sure you can too. Admittedly, some guests probably appreciate this added security measure.

The staff overall were friendly and accomodating and ready to please. As it is anywhere, an occasional tip goes a long way.

If I were to sum up the Tesoro, I don't think I would recommend it for a couple looking to go on a lavish honeymoon, but would suggest it to any of my freinds who were looking to avoid breaking the bank. There are nicer places in Cabo - we visited one specatular place with some girls we met at the bars. But for the price (those particular people had paid 3 times as much as we did for a European, rather than All-Inclusive plan), I don't think the Tesoro can be beat by anywhere in Cabo.

Seriously, this hotel needs to change their rating to (1/2) star.
My husband & I, along with his father & mother, and his brother, sister-in-law and their 14 yr. old son, had a very awakening 6 nights and 7 day vacation with little or No air conditioning in the 3 rooms booked for us, my husband & I had to request a change of rooms 4 times within the first 2 days, none of our air conditioners worked. One of the rooms they tried to put us in didn't even have a balcony, it had the site and sounds of the A/C units for the resort outside the only window, they were extremly loud for units that weren't working properly. We didn't mind too much not having a/c during the day, because we were out site seeing or the guys were fishing, but to try to sleep without air is poor service. My brother-in-law and his wife & son also had to change rooms, evertime we went to the front desk to have something done, there were many other visitors also complaining. The first day we arrived, we all had washcloths in our bathrooms, but, by day 2 through 7 they didn't have any available (this may sound petty) but, we all need to use washcloths, not hand towels or bath towels in the shower.
Their favorite answer to any question or complaint was " I'll send someone right up to take care of that " NOT...My in-laws are in their late 70's and tried to move them into a 17 step entrance into a room when their room statred leaking on one of the beds ( on the 3rd floor , go figure ) from a day & a half rain they had, so they brought them a roll-a-way instead , it was a hard & uncomfortable as their reg. beds. We rented a Hummer to go to another place to site see, and was told it would seat 7 (NOT) so that day was shot! The next day we all wanted to go to Lovers Beach to play on the beach, the boats they use to get you there are not set up to drop you off or pick you up, they are extremly dangerous to get out of and back in. So bad service, poor accomadations & bland food are just a few of the problems you will get , if you book with the Tesoro Los Cabos.(P.S.) Our original rooms weren't even ready when we arrived from the airport.

My husband and I just returned from a week at El Tesoro. We took the all incusive package. We were not disappointed. The food was really good...They had excellent, well-trained chefs. Our room was spotless and cleaned really well everyday. The staff at the desk and throughout the hotel were very accomodating and pleasant...This hotel and staff rate more than 3 stars. I would say at least 4 stars. The location on the marina and in town is wonderful. We fish..so all we had to do was walk out of the hotel and make the arrangements. We both caught huge marlins even though summer supposedly is their off season.. The location at the marina is within walking distance to many great restaurants and a very upscale mall....( with movies and fast food if you wanted it) plus several mexican touristy little markets... and several clubs. I would say the only kind of irritating thing is that when first flying into the airport at Cabo.. there was a hord of time share sellers.. who were like a flock of locusts.. and actually kind of frightened me at first. I believe that they need to control that and not let them descend on you at the airport like that. Also along the marina at the hotel and on the beach we were constantly bombarded with people selling their wares. That needs to be controlled along the marina and on the beaches. A big outdoor market should be where they are allowed to sell things.. not bother people on the marina and on the beaches. Timeshare people should not be allowed on the beaches to disturb your time there either. Cabo is a very interesting place to me...such a contrast of great opulence as you can see from the fabulous boats in the marina and then great poverty. We had no complaints with the hotel in the least....El Tesoro was fantastico!

  • Liked — clean, modern
  • Disliked — nothing
  • Tips/Secrets: — Be ready to handle the timeshare sellers and the street vendors..it is pretty constant
