Our trip to Cabo was almost spur of the moment. A travel website sent a promo price that included nonstop airfare from San Francisco to Cabo, transfers to and from the hotel/airport, and 4 nights all-inclusive at the Tesoro. The total cost for my girlfriend and I was under $1000. We couldn't pass it up.
And then imagine my horror when I read TripAdvisor and saw all of the bad reviews from earlier this year. I was really worried about the trip and had little to no positive expectations going in...
That said, I had a great time at the Tesoro. The nonstop flight was about 3 hours, just enough time for a movie and a soda. The airport at Cabo was simple to get through... if you do have a shuttle waiting from the Tesoro, it will be under EPIC services. I probably should put the following in CAPS and you'll thank me for the following information:
When you get off the airplane, go through customs, and then exit the security section, follow the exit signs. Do not stop to talk to anyone. If they say they have a great deal on something, ignore them. If they ask if you already have a shuttle and when you say yes, they say "oh, you have to check in here", don't listen to them. THEY ARE LYING. I wanted to punch the guy as he lied to my face. Instead, my girlfriend encouraged me to just continue to walk on past them and out to the shuttle. The shuttle was nice, air conditioned. The ride to the Tesoro is a good 40 minutes, maybe more with traffic. Just sit back and enjoy the ride. I tipped the driver a dollar. Don't forget TONS of $1 bills. Bring at least 30-40 of them.
Checking in at the Tesoro was easy. Just walked up to the front desk, handled them my information, and they put us into room 538. This was a standard room, but it was more than enough for my girlfriend and I. I did not have a balcony and it was right next to the waiting room for the 5th floor elevators. Some people might dislike this, but I'm a fan of being close to the elevators... I hate having to walk down a hallway for a mile every time I go and exit my room. There are stairs next to the elevators that are pretty easy to use as well.
They did offer to check us into a "junior suite upgrade" but I didn't bite. The couple after us did inquire and they said it would be an additional $20 a day. To be honest, that's not a bad deal, as I saw a few of the junior suites and they were BIG with tons of extra room.
Another good bit of information. The person next to the check-in area DOES NOT WORK FOR THE HOTEL. She called our room three times, informing us that she had a "welcoming package" for us. Yeah, right. Luckily, I read TripAdvisor and found out that this was just a way for her to try to make you sit through some 3 hour timeshare meetings for a free fishing trip. It's not worth my time. On the other hand, a couple we met did sit through the 3 hour timeshare from 8 am to 11 am and got an all-day fishing trip out of it. They were pressured repeatedly to buy a timeshare and the seller kept on lowering the price for them. They kept on saying no and then eventually were "allowed" to leave. They actually did this twice... To each their own.
We get to the room and it's a standard hotel "club med" room. Bathroom with shower/tub combo as you walk in. Bed in the middle of the room. TV with only 13 chans but some decent movie chans... that you'll get sick of after 2 days. Decent view of the pool and marina. The airconditioning worked fine. They actually came by to check on it for us, just in case. I told them that it was fine. The bed is quite firm but by the time we were ready to go to bed, I would have fallen asleep on the floor pretty easily.
The pool is nice, albeit a bit crowded. The people are... interesting, as the Tesoro seems to cater to a different type of customer than I normally see at the club med. More blue collar and tons of families, some of which told me that it was their first family vacation. I found that a bit odd.
The drinks were good. If you like hard alcohol, there's a charge for the jim beam level of drinks. I stuck with diet cokes (in cans from the pool and eating bars) and an occasional beer (Tecate, I think). We had lunch (and one breakfast) at the main eating locale by the pool. The host is a great guy, very kind and responsible. He's a bit slow with the service at times, but he's a good person and would always bring extra bottled waters throughout the meal. Nice touch.
The food at the main eating locale isn't that bad. My girlfriend and I found out that they will grill up chicken with onions and peppers for you on the range. We did this every single lunch! Add in some burning hot tortillas and the best pico de gallo I've had in a long time (my girlfriend said the guac was great), and we were loving it. Just a great lunch every single time with the Fajitas.
We settled into a routine for dinner. We'd make reservations at downstairs establishment (part of the all-inclusive plan) for 8 pm. Around 6:30 pm, we'd head to the bar right outside our dinner and have a few... ok, more than a few. At 8 pm, we'd go to dinner, have some additional fajitas (they were good), fresh mahi mahi grilled with garlic sauce, more chips and pico de gallo, tortilla soup, and everything else under the sun. The waiters were very kind and responsible. One waiter (Antonio) was especially nice. He spoke about his son throughout the meal with such pride. On our 3rd night, his son actually showed up at the hotel at closing time and Antonio rushed him over to meet us. Great people.
After dinner, we stumbled back to the bar where we had our pre-dinner drinks. One night there was karaoke led by the Tesoro entertainment staff at the bar. Another they played Jenga (with drinks if you lost). There was also music videos (new hip-hop with some latin tracks) playing during this time. People stopped by for a few drinks on their way out into town and some never made it out. Our bartender was also named Antonio. We tipped him $5 the first night (and pretty much the same every other night) and for our 2nd night, he upgraded me from blah rum to bacardi gold. Not the best, but very much appreciated. We went through a lot of it.
The bar would close at 11:30 and we'd usually head to bed around that time. One night we went out to the clubs. Good stuff, but probably would have been a little more exciting if I were single. Still, it's a little pointless to go out after having free drinks all day at the Tesoro. Might as well rest up for the early morning the following day!
There was also free internet at the hotel, which was a nice added bonus. I can't rate this hotel "excellent" as I feel that it's not a 5 star hotel by anyone's imagination. That said, it's an excellent value and I would go back there for the same deal in a year or two.
We had dinner with another couple the first night, adding two to our reservation. There were other interesting, friendly people at the Tesoro throughout our trip. It was fun and social.
With any hotel experience, there will be complications. Either the room won't be ready... the food won't be good one night... the air conditioning won't work for a while... things happen. I don't believe you should judge an establishment on such a small snapshot of time.
That said, this positive review is held to the same standard. I would recommend the value of the hotel and as I said, I'd stay here again and would recommend that others do as well. Just be sure to go in with tempered expectations and you'll be pleasantly surprised!
