Overall it was nice place and we had a great time. That said, some things need to be stated. First, the room smelled a little funky but I couldn't place it. We got used to it in a couple minutes and I don't think she even noticed it until I mentioned it about three days in. The bed, as the other reviews have said is HARD. I am by no means a light sleeper, I have backpacked for years and have no problem sleeping on a hiking sleep pad, even the ones made out of what looks like egg carton..but this bed was hard. I sleep on those mats because I have to and it's ok because I don't want to carry a mattress into the wild, but at a hotel I expect a little something more comfortable and this was one of those matresses that seems ok, then wakes you up a few dozen times to turn because the last drop of blood has left whatever side your sleeping on. We slept "OK" I just wish it would have been a little softer.
The all-inclusive was great. We aren't heavy drinkers but what we did drink and the three times we used the on-site restaurant, plus the one-time-a-day room service allowance, we definitely covered the additional all-inclusive charge. The included water taxi to the public beach was cool, with one warning. We were ok, but older people or heavier people need to be careful. The boat basically backs into the beach, the guy pulls the motor out of the water and you have to leap off the back of the boat because he can't actually "beach" the boat. So if you aren't down for some jumping or climbing/scrambling leg-over-rail clammoring back on board, this might not be the way to get to the public beach. It would appear though, that that is the fav mode of transport, a lot of hotels had water taxis drop people at that spot just like that. The all-inclusive part on the public beach was great. We drank free beers for hours, we had two lounge chairs with umbrellas over us and just enjoyed the day. Local merchants walked up and down the aisles which some would consider irritating, my wife saw it as a mobile mall. She bought a half-dozen items and so I have a word of caution. First, haggle. Second, watch EXACTLY how much you give them. I am pretty sure that when I gave one of them a $20, to which he said he had no change, he palmed the money while I looked for smaller bills and then said that he had already given it back to me. I am almost, the key being ALMOST certain I was too busy thumbing through my wallet when he said he didn't have change for the bill to have had time to take the bill back so I think he suckered me. So, word of caution. Second, know your exchange rate, one of them tried to argue I had the rate wrong but I knew I was right and eventually he conceeded.
The onsite restaurant we thought was very good, I know a lot of people complained but guys...c'mon...stop being such foodies. Sometimes when I read these reviews it's like the only reason any of these people go anywhere is to eat, eat, eat. Food is food. I like great food too, and if I come across it, I thoroughly enjoy it, but unlike some of these travelers, I don't pivot the worth of the entire vacation on it. That said, it's good, not great, not five star, but it's good. The bar crowd was fun, the hotel staff was helpful, and the best part about the hotel was the location.
The hotel us right on the Marina a short walk from the Paradiso, which is basically a very modern outdoor mall with bars, clubs, restaurants, shops, a movie theater, just about everything you would expect from a mall in the States. The downtown area is right outside the hotel with even more clubs, shops, restaurants, bars, so much to do we couldn't see it all and since it was so close, no taxi charges.
The taxi that brought us to the public beach only charged us $12 (for two) to take us to The Arch, it was a tour (including a the glass bottom boat thing) so there were some stops and some commentary, real good for $12. They only charge $5 to take you to any beach along the inside of the peninsula if you want to go snorkeling..if you go early enough you can basically get your own beach, all day, for $5 (Round Trip) and just bring lunch and beers with you, assuming you have gear but they have rentals there. The trip to Lovers Beach was $5 too and there was a guy on the beach selling ice cold Corona's (with limes) for $3 each. Not bad. Good snorkeling as long as the water isn't too rough. Same boat disembark/embarkation procedure as the public beach, made a little trickier by sometimes, some serious swells/surf.
Our room didn't have the BEST view but it wasn't bad, it had a hammock on the balcony which you can remove if you want to sit at the table outside. Room service is free, i.e. $3 tip but the food is included in the all-inclusive, one room service a day but it can be breakfast lunch or dinner. Nice views from the pool, pool was mostly quiet while we were there...they do group games/events at the outdoors lobby pool at night. The buffet was fine, as I said before food was GOOD, not great but fine for us. And my last comment, same as other airports in Mexico, make sure you BLOW PAST the timeshare people when you get off the plane after customs. Exit the airport to the right if you have prepurchased shuttles (Sign marked GROUP), to the left puts you next to the cabs.
One last thing, carry a wad of $2 peso notes at all times because even though it's all inclusive, everything moves on small bills and you're constantly tipping somebody for something.
