Before I start my official review, let me tell you that I read reviews prior to our week long stay about the pool construction and was completely irritated! It's not posted on the website anywhere and Interval wouldn't let me switch my week because they didn't see an official travel advisory about the pool. Irregardless, the lower pool is under construction and the entire renovation will not be completed until November. The good news is that you can ride the trolley to the next resort over, Villa del Arco, and use their facilities.
Now for the review...
Pros:
We had a Junior Suite (2 double beds + kitchen) and yes the furnishings are a little oudated, but overall, the room was well kept and cleaned each day. Our maid made animals out of the towels in both the bathroom and bedroom and the room was always extremely clean.
Check-in process went very smoothly. I can't vouch for long lines b/c ours was short, but I do imagine that there are peak arrival times during the day and if your flight happens to fall into that time then you'll have to wait a little. Just relax...these people are on what I call "island" time. Ask for your safe key when you check-in as well.
The market, deli, and ice cream shop across from the hotel are really nice. We found that beer, milk, and water were reasonably priced there, but if you want serious groceries you'd be better off taking the white city bus from the hotel for 7 pesos to Walmart and then take a taxi back.
Hotel restaurants we tried: Bella Italia at VDP (Excellent pizza), El Faro (Sushi at VDA)
City restaurants: Mi Casa (great!), Panchos (average mexican food), Salvatore Italian (go on wednesday for lasagna), and Mango Deck (on beach with good atmosphere)
Villa del Arco pool is amazing. Our son loved the lower pool which had the pirate ship restaurant and we hung out there every day!
Cons:
The timeshare sharks will get your right after check-in. We ended up taking the tour mid-week, but bargained with them for a temporary gold card up front (15% off all food and drinks at the hotel and some restaurants), $25 gift certificate to Bella Italia, and $25 gift certificate to El Faro. The tour says it takes 90 minutes. It took us 3 hours. My advice is to shake their hand when you show up for the tour and kindly tell them that they have 90 minutes and are on the clock. One couple we met did that and it will greatly speed things up.
Villa del Arco pool is extremely crowded b/c most guests from VDP are using their pool. They give green towels to VDP guests and VDA have brown. I walked down at 6:50 each morning and laid towels on our chairs, but beware, they will take your towels and any belongings away if you do not come back in 1 hour. We had lunch brought to our chairs each day from the Bucaneer and by the end of the week had eaten most everything on the menu. Food was good, but don't expect great things. It's just standard bar food.
Overall, we greatly enjoyed ourselves last week. The 3 resort grounds are immaculate, all staff seemed friendly and attentive. We would definitely go back, but even with a renovated pool would probably choose to stay in Villa del Arco b/c it's a newer resort and much more modern.
