I have stayed at the Villa del Palmar twice and I'm going a third time next week! The first time was in May 2003 with family, the second March 2004 with friends, and this year in April with just my boyfriend. Our first time going, we didn't know WHAT to expect but we were very pleased. In my opinion, Villa del Palmar is great for any type of group; families, friends, couples... There is a little bit of everything for everyone. And as long as you come to Cabo with an open mind and a laidback attitude, you should be able to enjoy yourself. After all your on vacation!
Now I just want to set the record straight because after all, just because one person had a bad vacation where many things went wrong, doesn't mean that yours will go the same. If you are staying at the Villa del Palmar, DO NOT RENT A CAR! You don't need it. We made this mistake the first time and it was a waste. From the airport, schedule transportation ahead of time (a bit pricey) or share a Taxi / Van with some people ($12/person). It's about a 30 mile drive. After that, you won't need to worry b/c you can either walk to your destination or take a quick taxi ride (cheap). Once you arrive, check-in can be very hectic, but when you get to your room you can relax.
The hotel and resort is BEAUTIFUL and very accomodating. If you'd like to eat at the hotel a couple of times and participate in one of their theme nights, by all means go ahead. Just expect it to be a bit crowded and pricey. However, there are MANY restaurants to try out in Cabo, so you won't be missing anything by not eating at the hotel (except maybe convenience). On the first or second day, I would recommend going downtown to the supermarket and buying some food and drinks for the week. It is very inexpensive and it will be very convenient to have something in your fridge when you are hungry! (The rooms all have kitchens.) The resort has its own market and stores but don't bother unless you really need something. (Its overpriced.) After that, you are pretty much set.
There are many things to do at VDP and Cabo. You can relax by the poolside, play at the beach, do an organized activity (Parasailing, scuba, boat tours, etc...), visit downtown, go to Lover's Beach (a must), and a million other things. It largely depends who you go with and what you like to do. Places to eat are plentiful and relatively inexpensive. The Office and Mi Casa are my two favorites. The nightlife is pretty fun too, but mostly young, loud people. Try Cabo Wabo, Squid Roe, and the Giggling Marlin.
Now, like one person said, courtesy and tips go a LONG way in Cabo. The local people are poor and make their money off (in their opinion) the rich tourists. There are many vendors selling all sorts of things on the beach. They can be overwhelming, but a "No Gracias" will send them away. If you want to buy souvenirs and stuff without haggling, try going to the downtown flea market. If you want to bargain, go with a beach vendor. As far as the maids, I have personally tipped them a little every day and they always did a great job. Everyone there is very SALES oriented, you'll notice. And by the way, if you would like to avoid noise, I would recommend a room high up and facing ocean view (not in toward the resort). I have stayed on this side twice and never had any problems. (Also, don't worry if you don't know any Spanish. Almost everyone there will speak English. And by the end of the week, you'll know some espanol).
Well, I hope this was helpful to anyone considering staying at the VDP or just Cabo itself. The rest you will just learn from experience. Enjoy your vacation!
