We stayed at VDP for a week in July. Although I arrived with some trepidation, having read the reviews on Trip Advisor, I can say with great certainty that there is some truth to all of them!
Our two bedroom suite was fine. It wasn't the nicest we've ever stayed in, but it was clean and there was little to complain about in terms of furnishings. The largest two problems with the room were: 1) the bedrooms had windows which faced the interior hallway, which meant light seeped through the curtains all night long, 2) the showers were prone to leaking onto the bathroom floor.
Our maid was wonderful. She was very conscientious and even re-washed our dishes each day (maybe she didn't think we did a good enough job?!) despite the fact the sign said to wash your own.
It is definitely worth the seventy pesos to take the bus to Wal-Mart to buy breakfast and lunch items. Our stove had four burners, but there isn't an oven. We saved quite a bit of money by cooking ourselves, but still were able to enjoy local ingredients AND we didn't have to pay the exorbitant resort prices for food and bottled water.
My major complaints involve the pool. Each day, starting about 1 p.m., the activities directors start the games. Games include bingo, trivia, and tequila volleyball. This was great fun the first day ... somewhat charming the second ... and enough to make someone crazy by the seventh. How many times can one hear "B61" in one vacation? It wouldn't be so bad, but the activities director would exaggerate each number and stall between numbers, in order to extend the game. Oh, and I should mention that the loudspeaker is SO loud, it's not even possible to get away from Bingo by going back up to the room for awhile; the noise seeps through the balcony doors and is almost as loud as being by the pool!
In addition to the annoying games, the pools are small, as has been previously stated. This means there is little room to escape the rowdy teenage games. The slide is tons of fun, though, so don't be too grown-up to try it.
My last complaint about the pool was the crappy way we were treated on the night of the American dinner. They set up the tables near the bottom pool, which means they need to clear all the lounge chairs. This was fine, we understood we'd have to leave early; we were told we could stay out until 3:00 p.m. At 1:45, they started picking up the chairs as people left them. By 2:30, there were only a few of us left and one of the staff members who had been shooting us ugly glares finally came over and gave us the "well, are you going to leave or what?" look. We told him that we'd been given until 3:00 p.m. At that point, he got mad and told us "no, you should have been gone at 2:00 p.m." We politely disagreed, but packed up anyway. I couldn't resist putting the posted sign I saw laying on the ground, which said "Pool area closed at 3:00 p.m." on my lounge chair as I walked away.
Service is sub-par, rooms are fine, view is gorgeous. Just know what you're getting into when you go.
