“Nice place, great location!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2013 via mobile

We stayed at villa del palmar for a week on an all-inclusive plan. Check in was smooth and easy with the typical time share sales pitch built in, but once we expressed no interest we were not approached again.

Our room was a spacious and clean 1 bedroom suite with a well equipped kitchen that we didn't use. We found a small snack waiting for us each day after returning to our well made-up room. Each time we came across a house cleaning manager they were sure to ask if we needed anything for our room.

The pools and garden areas were very clean and well kept. The beach area was also very clean and there were a good number of lounges.

Service on the beach and at the pool was good, but not great. I believe the service could be improved greatly if management would be more consistent in scheduling the time it begins and by allowing servers to work the same areas each day. I guess its more of a personal preference, but in most resorts we have stayed at that was the case. One other complaint about the service (and again it's a management issue) is you are required to sign a receipt every time you eat or order anything, even down to a bottle of water. Maybe servers could scan bar codes on the bracelets all-inclusive guests are required to wear, or something else, but the amount of paper generated in one day would be enough to motivate me to seek a better way.

We only ate breakfast and lunch at the resort so we can't review dinner, but the two meals we had each day were very good. Breakfast was always fresh with all of the usual choices and lunch by the pool was also very good. The pizzas were great.

The location is excellent for those who like to head into Cabo. You could easily take a cab ($7) each way, or take a leisurely stroll down the beach (just about a mile) to the marina area.

Overall, this resort was very relaxing and enjoyable, the staff were very friendly and the the price matched the facility and level of service.

My family and I stay here (and Villa la Estancia, we bounce between the two) every year around Halloween for 2 weeks. Halloween in Cabo is such an experience! The Villa del Palmar also has a FANTASTIC spa. I always wake up early with my sisters one day out of the trip and we go and get massages and hang out in the hot tub and the sauna. It is so relaxing! The resort staff is fantastic and so helpful. They have a nice staff of people out front who will call taxis for you if you need them. It's very helpful. You're never too far from a fun thing to do when staying at this resort. I have no complaints about this resort. Everyone is so great here :)

My husband and I stayed here for a week Jan 17-24 (my birthday was on the 21st). Weather was warm 28 - 30 degrees everyday. We arrived early and were able to check in. Ramone at the front desk was very friendly and was able to answer any questions we had. We also met Elena Martinez (concierge) who was very friendly and helpful. The resort is older but beautiful and well kept. Our view was exactly what we requested. We had the view of Lands End, Lovers Beach etc. Service was great in restaurants, breakfast was great especially the omlettes and the themed buffets had a good variety and the entertainment each night was great. We were able to watching from our balcony. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets, cruise ships and whales. We did the Whale watching Safari tour with Cabo Adventures and had an amazing time. was able to witness the amazing humpback whales fairly close to the Zodiak. Would definitely do it again. We had our pictures done by the photographer on site the night before we left and she captured some amazing photos. On the morning we were leaving we spent half hour talking to the Bell hop outside his name was Efrain. He is very friendly and funny! Took our minds off having to come back to Alberta, Canada where it is -30 temperatures now. We would definitely go back and recommend it to our friends and family that want to have a relaxing vacation.

Room Tip: Rooms on 7th floor (junior suite oceanview) have an amazing view

January 2013

As we crossed over the Sea of Cortez (some call it the Gulf of California) we landed at Cabo San Jose and processed through a very clean and modern airport. Passing through customs was fast where all your bags go through a “quick look” X ray and yes they still have the “push the button” system where only if the small light turns up Red, you asked to open your bags. Yvonne pushed RED but we just walked through anyway because Tom pushed green.

The next area is the most difficult gauntlet (like in all Mexican airports), where you are bombarded by this and that guy trying to pull you off toward this or that transportation or time share presentation option (with rewards). Our Villa Del Palmar group had warned us about this issue and had given detailed instructions (including a map) on where to go and what to avoid. Tom sort of stumbled in the middle of all of this, but Yvonne SHOT back (very effectively) at the first group that offered up a stumbling block towards our success path (good girl). Right where they told us the transportation group would be was the guy waiting for us.

The transportation from where the airport is (Cabo San Joes) to the Villa del Palmar in Cabo San Lucas (Lands end at the very bottom of the Baja peninsula), takes about 20 minutes by cab (which the resort gave us a coupon for).

We asked the driver to stop for some beer can refreshments and sure enough he stopped at a large distributor where all of our liquid needs were available.

We passed by the convention center where President Obama had attended the American Economic summit three months ago, and were very pleased to see that everything in any direction (we could see) was totally dedicated to the US and Canadian tourist industry.

Observation:

• Everything is almost new and shiney and supported with just about everything you would find at home (Walgreen / Walmart / Costco / you name it).

• There was a gigantic building boom in this area ten years ago, but just like in the States and what we observed in Spain, that big bubble busted and all construction stopped.

Checked into the villa and had our option of two locations, one on the first floor looking out to a garden and another building, and another on the 7th floor overlooking the garden with a small sliver view to the ocean. We decided on the 7th floor location (room 3724). The room has a nice king bedroom with bath and a living room with a comfortable Murphy bed, second bathroom and kitchen.

After a long day of travel, we decided to stay on the property since it was after 5:00 before we settled in. We just walk around the property, and then stopped for a couple cold beers and a nice hamburger in the sports bar near the pool.

FYI – We go this one bedroom villa at $700 for eight days and 7 nights (along with a free ride to the facility). The only other added attraction was a free gold card that gave you around 15% discount on anything purchased on the property (including tours) + at a lot of restaurants in town, but remember we had to go to a 90 minute time share presentation to get this ---- If we refused to go then we would be charged around $5,000 for the accommodations. Note on the last day (just for grins) we asked what is the rate for two if we wanted to stay an extra days; and they noted for a single hotel room the rate was $398 a night.

18 January (Friday)

Ummm --- Up at around 7 am. Today we have to take in the time-share presentation starting at 8 AM. Presentation started off with an EXCELLENT breakfast followed by a walk around the new property next door Villa Del Arco and a relatively low-pressure presentation. After we had told them NO we were released. With such a success we stumbled across this nice young lady (Martha) that talked us into a presentation for tomorrow at the Mayan Grand in San Jose which for $22.50 PP where we would get another breakfast and Four tickets to two different evening dinner cruises (one on the party boat and another on the Pirate ship). We fell for this based on the simple presentation we experienced today and the thought we could donate just another 90 minutes for a nice return.

After the presentation, we took the local bus ($1 PP) to Walmart down the street and picked up food and other supplies for the week. Got our groceries back to the villa via a $6 cab ride. Walked Medona Beach down to the marina (about 1.5 miles) in very clean, dense sand (no shells). After checking out the area, we took a cab back ($6 for the 4 of us).

General comments / FYI information:

• While talking to the beach vendors we found out that based on recent regulations; all vendors are obligated to dress well (all we observed were in nice white linen), not set up shop in one location (they all have to keep moving) and their silver jewelry must be of high silver quality (not the silver plated junk like you might find with the street vendors in the marina). Vendor noted the beaches are patrolled by police authority (we saw them on their four wheelers), and if any violations are observed, the police will drag the vendor down to the police station and level up to a $500 (US dollar) fine on them.

• Maid service at the Villa Palmar included a change of bedding every day along with the maid doing any dishes we failed to do ourselves.

• There is no heating in any of the hotel / villa rooms (including that high end Mayan we visited), but we had very nice two zone central air-conditioning (one for the bedroom and one for the living room).

• Do not get a room near the elevator as you can hear it operate in the bedroom (Tom just turned up the bathroom exhaust fan as a white noise source).

• The rooms overlooking the pool appears to be very noisy (unless you like that sort of thing) up until around 11 PM as one of the buffet restaurants has a very loud after dinner show. We were very happy with the quite environment of what they call the garden view.

• About the only thing we could complain about was that the screen door out to the patio was in disrepair (would not stay on the track + screen material loose).

• Although this place was a very enjoyable experience, I would suspect we will most likely not repeat a trip to this location for there are so many other great places to also visit.

• The temperature averaged between 70 F and 80 F everyday with blue skies and mild breezes. We could not have ordered any better weather!

• US dollars are taken everywhere. The internet exchange rate is around $13 peso to the us dollar, but you get everything from 10 to 12 peso’s to the dollar at various vendors. Suggestion first get their rock bottom price is US dollars and pay in peso’s at the $13 rate and they will take it as your final bargaining chip. Another suggestion is take a lot of five and one dollar bills for the cab rides. The ATM machines only pay off in Peso’s, so plan accordingly.

Room Tip: • Do not get a room near the elevator as you can hear it operate in the bedroom (Tom just turned up...

We traveled here for our second year in a row, staying 2 weeks all inclusive in the middle of January. This resort and the people working there always make us feel welcome and they always make our stay, an unforgettable experience. Here is a little break down of the many great things this resort offers.

The rooms are always clean and in pretty good condition. We did not have an oceanview room, but, really, who goes to Cabo to spend time in their room anyways! The resort grounds are always in immaculate condition, and the pools are always kept very clean. We would like to congratulate the night staff that always works so hard at cleaning up and making sure everything is all ready and in immaculate condition for the next day. They work so hard at their thankless jobs.

Every night has a different theme for the buffet at the Tortugas restaurant, and the food choices are various enough to satisfy pretty much any tastes. The California restaurant offers a great selection of a la carte choices and the pool snack bar makes amazing pizzas. Breakfasts are really tasty and a special Thank you to the great omelet station cook Joan, who can make various omelets and eggs just the way you like it. Joan is awesome, fast, and always smiling and super friendly.

The sports and entertainment staff at this resort is outstanding and very friendly. They are a big reason why we decided to go back to this resort. These guys and gals do it all, from spanish lessons, to beach and tequila volleyball, to paddle board lessons and dancing in the evening theme shows. Ana, Ramon, Hugo, Yenia, Chuy, Eric, Chucho and Iris made this trip unforgettable. Thank you to the crew for being so amazing to us!

We would also like to mention a few of the outstanding waiters around the pool/beach areas and restaurants. We recommend Ester and Daniella around the pool/beach area... they will attend to your needs quickly and always with a smile and super friendly attitude. Liz, Karen and Paco in the restaurants are also extraordinary! A special mention to a couple guys behind the pool bar, goes out to Juan and Miguel...... you guys rock!!!

Now for those of you who might have issues or complaints that need resolving, there are 2 outstanding guys that will gladly help you out. Alucard and Rodolpho are always walking around and asking guests how things are going, and making sure that your stay is enjoyable in every way. They would always greet us with a smile, and spare some time to speak with us and make our days more enjoyable. Thank you so much to the both of you for being so friendly and making us feel so welcomed everyday!!!

All this being said, from check in to check out, we definitely recommend this resort to everyone.

This is a great place, with updated furniture and clean grounds. No swim-up bar, but a fun slide into the pool. The biggest drawback is that it's a little further away from town - it's just a bit too far to walk - but it's a cheap enough cab ride. The restaurants here are really, very good and the service is great.
