We stayed at VDP from March 14 - 24, 2008. This was a family vacation and there were three of us, two adults and an 8 year old. I had read the reviews prior to our travel and talked to people that owned at VDP, so I went with an open mind.
To quantify my following review I'll say that we are not typically luxury travellers. I travel for business and expect quality similar to Hilton's business traveller hotels such as their Garden Inns, but when we travel as a family have stayed at Motel 6 and Super 8 hotels. We expect clean and comfortable but spacious rooms and luxurious amenities are not requirements for us.
We were in Cabo during the heart of spring break. Upon walking in to VDP for check-in it became immediately obvious that we were going to be surrounded by raucous teenagers the whole time. Several in line for check-in already had beers in hand. That said, check-in went quickly and the clerks, although obviously frazzled, were nothing but polite and efficient. We checked in around 3pm and were immediately shown to our room by one of the concierge/timeshare ladies. She did ask us to stop down after we'd settled in for our "welcome packet".
Our bags were delivered to our room within minutes of our arrival and the bell boy was very nice. We found all of the staff to be friendly and helpful - even the timeshare ladies. We did stop down for our welcome packet and they were persistent, yet not rude, about doing the timeshare presentation for del Arco. We ended up doing but only because we were curious as to the timeshare stuff. It was a beautiful property, medium sell and we got some nice goodies by holding out our booking for a day or two.
Details on Villa del Palmar:
Rooms: Clean and spacious. We had a junior suite with a queen bed and pull-out sofa, as we'd requested upon reservation. We were on the backside of building three with a garden view and a tiny slice of ocean view. I felt like the room was plenty bright with the light from the sliding glass door. The room had a full-sized fridge, two burner range, microwave, a/c, ceiling fan, blender, toaster, coffee pot, in-room safe (we never used), blow dryer and iron & ironing board. The veranda was nice to sit on, with a small table and a couple chairs. The furniture and room were dated, but fully functional and clean. The only "issues" we had were figuring out the a/c (operator error) and twice when we used the microwave the breaker switched - easily reset.
Contrary to what others have said, we weren't bothered by noise in the hallways or adjoining rooms. Every now and then we'd hear a particularly loud group of kids in the hall or outside, but the only other noise we got was from the room above us - which was to be expected as the floors are tile. It never disturbed us.
Staff: The staff was always pleasant and helpful. We don't speak Spanish and discovered right away that the maids and other support staff speak very little Engish, so if we had questions we needed to go to the front desk, the activity staff or others whose jobs were to interact guests. A smile was always returned in kind as well as "hola" and all the staff was very appreciative of even the smallest tip. The maids were nice and efficient and always checking to see that we had everything we needed. The bell boys were funny and awsome and very quick with getting our car for us and were a great source of information.
Pools: The main pool was the primary source of activity. Chairs in the sun were sometimes hard to find right there, but it was never a huge issue for us. Our daughter LOVED the whale slide, as did many of the college kids. It was fast and kept young and old entertained. There was always music playing and while there is not a swim-up bar, the bar is close and there are waiters around the pool. Their are also activities by the pool during the day which looked like a bunch of fun, though we only took part in the Easter activities. If you wanted a quieter spot you could go by the kiddie pool or to the upper pool and relax or down to the roped off area of the beach. We were there ten days and saw the pools being cleaned several times during our stay.
Misc: We only did one of VDP's activity nights - we chose the beach party. The food was wonderful, the drinks strong and flowing freely. It's pretty pricy (around $34/person) but it was all you can eat and drink - which would have been a lot more downtown. They had a really good live band, limbo contests, etc and the young adults that handle their activities are so much fun! We found ourselves (middle-aged, low-key parents) partying with the teenagers - dancing and cheering on the limbo contestants while our daughter played in the sand with other children. I would have loved to do the Fiesta night as well, just didn't fit into our schedule.
On Easter they had a sand castle contest and egg hunt for the kids. All the kids had a lot of fun and walked away with a bag full of candy. Again, I can't say enough about the activity directors.
Although the pools, bars and hot tubs were crawling with spring breakers, we weren't as disturbed by them as we expected to be. They were pretty well-behaved for the most part and entertaining to watch. We're not big drinkers yet we didn't see anyone that was so drunk they bothered us or were a disturbance. My daughter even talked to many of the college-aged kids in the pool and "taught" them how to go down the water slide.
Overall we thought VDP was a nice, fun, relaxed resort that's great for people of all ages. If you are looking for quiet, high-end elegance it's probably not the place for you. But, if you want to have a good time, a decent room for a decent price and be close to all the activities, VDP is the place to be.
