I have to say that my husband and I were absolutely disappointed in this resort. As soon as we got there, we were greeted by our "concierge" who was really a salesperson trying to pressure you into getting a gold card which is obtained by sitting through a timeshare presentation (sorry, not what I want to do thirty seconds after arriving at the resort after 12 hours of travel).
Anyway, the room. Ugh. While we did have a gorgeous ocean view, this was the only redeeming quality of the room. It smelled of mildew, our A/C didn't work at full blast, and one of our fans barely operated (imagine stale, stagnant air and there you go). And the other reviewers are right -- it is very loud at night when the activities are going on, so be forewarned.
We spent a lot of time at the pool. No problem getting chairs. At times, the music started way too early in the morning when really, you just wanted to sunbathe or read a book. It felt like Spring Break in September. We really enjoyed the slide and some of the activities (tequila volleyball). The hotel reps running the events were engaging, but again, they’re pushing the next activity for that night (which isn’t free). Service was slow, but the palla drinks were delicious and served in a pineapple - yum! And the jacuzzi was great to relax in.
The food was okay. The best place at VDP to eat was at the Bella restaurant. And the food was good, but not spectacular (watch the flies at dusk -- nothing kills a romantic dinner like having to swat tons of flies off your food). The pizza and quesadillas at the pool were pretty good, too. I recommend going to the Palmita Market (bring your Costco card which saves you lots of $$) -- we made sandwiches in our room, bought bottled water, liquor, and snacks. Or better yet, make a Costco run (there’s one nearby).
In terms of location, it was great being so close to downtown Cabo. A quick cab ride (cabs are readily available from the resort) gets you to all of the Cabo bars and stores.
As for the beach, taking a walk was a total headache. Every 10 feet there is a vendor trying to get you to buy or rent something. Again, taking in the view is completely ruined when you feel like you have to dodge salespeople. However, on the bright side, the view is incredible! The water is warm, blue, picturesque.
What saved this vacation from being a total disaster was the fact we learned we could use the pool at Del Arco. This resort is night and day from VDP. NO pressure! A quick trolley ride over and immediately, we were greeted by helpful staff. The waiters and waitresses at the pool are super pleasant and attentive (thank you Karina -- you were amazing!!!). The pool is huge, clean, beautiful, well-maintained, and overlooks the ocean. No rowdy games here or thumping music. The food is also a world apart from VDP (healthier fare, everything was good, if not delicious). Total relaxation! The rooms, since they are new, are of course, much, much nicer than those at VDP. We tried to get switched over to Del Arco, but unfortunately, they weren't able to move us due to scheduling issues with our travel. If we ever go to Cabo again, we will definitely try the Del Arco instead.
Overall, this was not the worst vacation – Cabo’s scenery is stunning and we had gorgeous, perfect weather. Villa Del Palmar was not the worst place, but I would certainly not recommend staying there to anyone I know (or any of you reading this). What should have been a week celebrating our anniversary felt more like a disappointing waste of our vacation time, planning, and money.
