Hola! Just returned from my first trip to Cabo San Lucas! I was there during very hot days: August 13 - 21, 2006. I decided to stay at the Pueblo Bonito Rose based on the location, resort amenities and beach access. I was not disappointed at all.
The best part about the hotel is the location! You can walk to downtown in @ 10 mins., or take a cab ride for 60 pesos ($6 US dollars). Very happy with the room - I was in room 1004 first floor and right outside the pool area. The room was clean and spacious for one person (see pics).
The staff was excellent. Great bar service on the beach! Never had to wait long for service and the drinks were great (not weak at all). If you go to the bar across from the pool, ask for “Pablo” or “Oswaldo” - the BEST bartenders ever! My favorite martini drink is called "The Neto" named by the owner. It's a step up from a Cosmopolitan made with Tequila.
I traveled to Cabo alone - my preferred way to travel. I never felt uncomfortable, and truly enjoyed the pool area, beach, and dancing in the clubs downtown. My #1 tip is to make friends with the locals. You'll learn where the best places are to eat and drink, the best nights for the clubs, and what places to avoid. It's true when you arrive a representative is there to offer you a “Welcome Packet” which is really an opportunity to sign-up for their time share for $20. I did not take the tour (this one at least) and did get my $20 USD in cash when I handed in the pink reservation slip upon checkout. I did go to the time share presentation for Cabo Villas (highly recommend it for the breakfast alone) and the people were great (not sharks), the place is gorgeous but I wasn’t ready to sign up for time share offer. I was there over 75 mins (I enjoyed talking to the representatives) and did get free glass bottom boat tours for the Arch, well worth the presentation.
Tips from my experience:
·Definitely bring @ $50+ dollars in singles to tips. I didn’t have a chance to do this before I left NJ and had to exchange big bills for $200 pesos to give tips.
·Meet the locals – everyone is friendly and they are quick to give advice on just about everything.
·Go to City Club (Sam’s Club) to buy water for your stay. I bought a HUGE bottle for about $11.00 and never had to use the Evian bottles in the room.
·If you plan on partying like I did downtown (dancing and drinking most of the nights), save $12.00 ($120 pesos) to get cabs to and from the hotel. YES you can walk, but why walk when you can take the cabs?!
·MUST SEE locations are Cabo Wabo (great for rock songs and dancing), El Squid Roe (GREAT for dancing if you like rap and R&B music). Squid Roe stays open late (4am) and I was there almost every night and had the BEST time! *Warning: Loud music, young crowd, go there for the dancing and entertainment.
·Other cool spots are Tanga Tanga (local bar), and Caliente Casino Real (excellent sports bar with tons of TVs w/satellite).
·If you’re staying at this hotel, you can walk to a great restaurant “Mi Casa de Mariscos” a great Mexican Seafood restaurant up the road from the hotel. FANTASTIC OYSTERS! I ate about 2 dozen! Also the staff is wonderful.
·Try the Fish Tacos (especially Marlin). They are excellent! There is a great hole-in-the-wall restaurant behind Squid Roe that is open VERY late (e.g. 2am+). A very nice woman and son run the place, and make the best fish tacos in my opinion.
·Take a cab to Mammas on Hildago street for breakfast. EXCELLENT FOOD!
·Another good place for cheap food is Taco Loco- next to the Jungle bar 4 tacos and a beer $6.00.
·The Office on Medano beach – another great place for breakfast.
·You HAVE to take a glass bottom boat tour of the Arch, Lovers beach (Divorce beach is the opposite side – definitely NOT for swimming), and the seal area.
·BELIEVE THE SWIMMING WARNING! Even though this resort is on Medano beach (most popular swimming beach) the waves/current are VERY strong and not a destination for people who desire to wade in the water. I got knocked down a few times by the waves (I saw kids being tossed like salads) and there is NOT a lifeguard anywhere if you need one. Trust me = enjoy the pool!
·It helps if you speak or know a little Spanish. Many of the locals do not speak fluent English so you are S.O.L. (S*&% out of Luck) if you need directions or help and don’t know the basics. I studied Spanish in High School, so it all came back to me after 2 days of being around the locals.
·Air Conditioning is not like US A/C. Get used to the heat especially if you’re traveling during the hotter months. Many bars do not have strong, blowing A/C. I was told the best time to go to Cabo is from October through March.
The only CONS regarding the hotel: 1) my shower never got HOT water. Lukewarm at best, so I missed my daily hot showers. 2) they have STRICT rules on NO GUESTS after 10pm, so if you want to return to the hotel to shower and change clothes after 10pm (salsa music is too fast for me), your friends will have to wait outside the hotel for you. NO EXCEPTIONS!!
Overall I had a great experience in Cabo. Great (but hot) weather, fantastic food, excellent clubs, wonderful service and simply a beautiful place to visit. You can have a wild time or a more relaxing time – your choice. I did both! I’m already trying to book a flight there this Fall. Enjoy!!
