We just spent 8 days 7 nights at PBR from 8/8-8/15/2005. The resort although beautiful was somewhat smaller than what I had pictured it to be. However, this was not a drawback. Although we would have enjoyed maybe an additional 200 square feet in the 1 bedroom that we were assigned to. The first room assignment was room 2044, but it had evidence of mold in the room. The view from this room was of the pool area and the huge bird cage in the courtyard. The second room was fine. The room was 3038. The view was again of the pool area/courtyard. Terra Cotta tiles were throughout the 1 bedroom, and mexican stone tile decorated the bathroom. There is also a telephone in the bathroom. New cabintry was in the kitchen, along with a dining room table and 4 chairs. PBR was also replacing all the sofa beds on 8/9/05. So we were the first to use it...pretty comfortable.
We bought some pretty good sandwich platters from the deli downstairs. The price was about $7.50 USD. The cakes on the other hand looked better than they tasted. We purchased the coconut, chocolate forest, and carrott cake slices. All other purchases at the deli are pretty expensive--for example 4 batteries were $7.30 USD. A large bag of potato chips was $3.80 USD.
We ate downstairs at the outside restaurant. The food was so-so. The buffetts were expensive for the food selection...$24.00 per person/half price for kids. The ambience on the other hand was wonderful. It was a beautiful outdoor setting overlooking the ocean at sunset. You can't get better than that!
We didn't get a chance to enjoy the spa for a massage or facial, but heard really good things about it. However, the gym was nice with a great assortment of exercise machines. There was either 5 or 6 treadmills, about 4 exercise bikes, about 4 step machines, and quite a few weight machines.
The internet cafe on site was reasonable. Up to 30 minutes for $5.00-perfect for just checking and sending emails, or getting some quick information. There is also a very beautiful, and tranquil courtyard between the deli and the internet in which to eat in or to read a book.
I found that the tours available through the concierge was less expensive than what is posted on any website, or even trying to book directly. On an average, you can save between $10 to $20 per tour by booking at the hotel lobby. However, Avis in the hotel lobby was more expensive. For a small car for 1 day was $54.00, compared to $26.86 for the same car booked through expedia with taxes and fees included.
The staff was outstanding. The referrals to restaurants were topnotched. Directions were very exact. Anything you wanted to know the staff was very knowledgable about.
The hotel could not have been in a better location. Restaurants are within 3-5 minutes walking distance on the beach. In fact, we walked past about 6 restaurants on the beach on the way to the marina, which is about a 15 minute walk from the hotel if beach walking---a little longer if you take the street.
There is a rope that blocks the beach vendors off from hotel guests. However, if you cross that rope, you are on your own. Beach vendors can be annoying, but after awhile, it is just funny. We have never seen anything like it in our lives. The first day we arrived, we must have had a sign on us saying "new meat," because we were approached 44 times from the time we actually started counting...no I don't want a pair of silver earring, no.... I don't need any bangles, I don't have anywhere to put a large ceramic dish with a duck on it, nor any room for a wooden bird, I don't want a henna tatoo, and I don't have time to have my hair braided today, Glass and tin fish whistle chimes won't fit into my luggage etc..... However, I discovered on day 4 ------just say NO TENGO DINERO! The word spreaded so fast, I felt like I was being quarantined. Not another vendor approached me that day.
There wouldn't be a lounge chair problem if more people would stop complaining amongst themselves, and take their concerns to the people that can actually do something about it--- Management. After witnessing from my balcony on day 2, guests putting down towels on beach chairs at 6:30 AM, and going back upstairs, I immediately called the hotel manager. He arrived at 9:00 AM, and I was told that any beach chair that has been reserved with guest belongings and is unoccupied for over an hour, to notify the pool manager, and he will remove those items. Each day I would wake up to find the same people leaving towels, shoes, sunglasses, books etc at 6:30 AM, and go back upstairs until the afternoon. However, each time I would arrive at the pool, I went straight to the pool manager, pointed out the canopy that I wanted, made a report of the guest that left the items, and the time, and 2 minutes later, I am relaxing by the pool, under my canopy, sipping on a magarita. It is as simple as that!
All in all, it was an outstanding vacation with beautiful weather everyday. I will definitely stay at the Pueblo Bonito Rose again and again.
