Pueblo Bonito Rose
Date: 12/9-12/13/2004
Reviewer: From New York City

Just returned from 4 days fishing trip in Cabo. We were staing in Pueblo Bonito Rose hotel. The hotel is great. It has nice architectural features inside and outside of the building. Rooms are large and very clean. My room was next to spotless. The service in hotel was very good. The beach is few feet away from hotel and clean. Water is deep just few yards from the shore, but it exceptionally clean. Gym is large with good number of equipment. Internet service is available on the first floor of hotel and price is reasonable.

The majority of other reviews are complaining about push by timeshare salespeople. We did not see a one in a four days. The "other" salesmen(women) selling local craft are kept within certain distance from vacationers on the beach and were very polite.

The few minuses:
1. Stay away from "champain" breakfast - we dealing with price of 30-40$ per person.
2. Stay away from any food service in hotel - overpriced. For 10$USA roundtrip take taxi to town 5-10 minutes or walk along the beach for 20-25 minutes (take taxi) and you will have great number of restaurants in marina area with better quality food and less costly.
3. No visitor allowed in your room after 8pm - don't even try to bribe security - did not work.
4. The nearest ATM machine is across street from hotel in a building at the some kind bus/cars parking lot and looks kind scary in a middle of the night. Day time is fine

Fishing was great - 3 striped marlins approximately 180 lbs, 140 lbs and 130 lbs in first day.

We have been to the Pueblo Bonito Rose twice and both times were wonderful. The staff is very attentive. Our view of the ocean from our room was beautiful. You have to have a room on the upper levels to see the ocean. The breakfast buffet is very good. Well worth the money. It's beautfil to relax and eat while looking at the view of the beach. Dinner can be a little pricey but probably not that different from some of the places in town. Vendors can't come inside the roped off area on the beach. They leave you alone if you ignore them. However, I did get a Henna tattoo. Just make sure you bargain with them. We didn't find the town that far of a walk as some others have said. We usually walked into town every day. We liked to explore and try the different restaurants in town. We only took a taxi to the docks for excursions that we booked. At first I was leary about walking into town at night, because it's not very populated nor well lit. But we did it enough that I started to feel comfortable realizing that no one bothered us. In fact, you walk right by the Fire Dept. The first time we went to Cabo, we stayed at the Villa Del Palmar. Now that's a far walk. We said we would never go back there just because of the distance into town. We will definitely go back to the Pueblo Bonito!

Our visit was Jan.10-14, 2005.

The PB Rose is a beautiful Hotel with all the amenities that you could hope to have - large beach, fabulous pool area, great fitness center, several restaurants, attentive staff, close to the downtown area, etc.

The food at the Rose was a little below average as was the food at most of the restaurants in Cabo San Lucas. And the most of the better eating establishments charge a pretty stiff price for everthing - about $30 to $60 per person for dinner. I understand that this is a resort area, but I expect some respectable food for high-end prices.

Our (my family & me) main complaint about the Rose is the unbelieveable amount of time and effort that they spend on soliciting TimeShare ownership. From the moment that we set foot on the grounds, we were barraged by staff members (no less than 7 staff members made personal contact with us) about TimeShares over a period of 3 days.

On the first morning of our stay, we had breakfast in the Mare Nosturm when a lady staff member approached the table, and proceeded to talk to us about her life for some 30 minutes. Then when we were finished with our meal (after she had ruined our meal), she asked if we had been invited to see their sister hotel, Sunset Beach for a presentaion. We were very upset and furious at her conniving, self-serving attitude. We never ate another meal at the Rose.

Also, I might add that the merchandise solicitation (i.e. trinkets, hats, sunglasses, etc.) on the beach (in front of the Rose) was overwhelming & almost unbearable. Not a relaxing situation.

Needless to say , we will not return to the Rose or Cabo San Lucas.

The Rose is a stunningly beautiful hotel. The pool area could not be more expensive looking. It is Gigantic, and there are white and black swans and these two huge (4 feet tall?) exotic african birds marching around free, although they keep to themselves near their food bowls. All the decorations are elegant and first-rate. The rooms themselves get a "very good" with fine appointments that are getting on in age.

My biggest general complaint of the hotel is the location. It is MUCH further from the action (Squid Roe, Cabo Wabo, etc), than anyone here will admit. Expect to walk around 3/4 of a mile, with several blocks of extremely dark and scary roads (several have NO lights - you just walk toward the brights of downtown). Scary, as in guys in cars will cruise by at about 2 miles per hour and stare at you as they pass - then speed off. Consider the taxi. My girl brought heels but could not wear them because of the distance to downtown. If I were to do this again, I would probably try to move south towards the marina about 3 hotels to be closer to the nightlife.

My other comment is that Cabo is NOT the insane party destination for those in their 20s. I went perhaps during a down week (between thanksgiving and christmas) because I heard this is prime time and that the weather is best. The weather was definitely perfect. But the average age of the people in Squid Roe, Gigglin' Marlin, and Cabo Wabo must have been 35-40 or older. There was loud music and alcohol and some dancing, but NO girls-gone-wild atmosphere in the least. During the day, the bars/restaurants on the beach would hold drinking contests/relays and not be able to find 5 people to enter. Maybe it's more wild/younger during spring break.

I was there with my fiance, so the relaxed and less-party atmosphere was perfect for us to enjoy each other's company. But if you are seeking a wild sorority kegger bikini bash, look elsewhere than Cabo San Lucas.

We stayed at the Pueblo Bonito Rose for our honeymoon in September of 2003. The pictures of the hotel do not do it justice. It is beautiful and sparkling clean. The staff was always more than courteous & friendly - we never once felt like they were rolling our eyes at the midnight room service we ordered! The food was delicious - try the flan - and the poolside service was great to get lunch without losing your spot. My favorite feature was the pair of beautiful giant (although a little territorial) tropical birds that roamed around the reflection pool. The two huge aviaries and almost hidden koi pond made the place seem like a dream. Use the hotel's recommendations for local attractions, especially the Pez Gato Boys' Snorkeling trip to Santa Maria Bay. The end of our trip unfortunately included Hurricane Marty but the hotel felt safe & sane the whole time. They gave us half off the extra night we had to stay because our flight was cancelled. If (hopefully when) we go back to Cabo, we'll definitely stay at the Pueblo Bonito.
