My husband and I went for a break without the kids. We chose Pueblo Bonito Rose because it was close to town. Then we took a timeshare TOUR of Pueblo Bonito SUNSET. I was glad we did not stay there because although the Sunset is GORGEOUS on the ocean it is far from anywhere...more of a resort where you stay put. We like to shop a lot downtown so the Rose' was better as it was in walking distance. And at the Sunset you cannot put your body in the beach water - it is very dangerous so no one even goes on the beach unless to fly a kite. At the Rose' they did have a beachfront area for visitors but be careful b/c it is still very dangerous. The waters are absolutely gorgeous but deadly there. The currents are strong, the water is very deep and very dark - not much swimming is allowed. The waves can grab up a small child in an instant and lead them to very deep water b/c the sand sort of 'cliffs' from extremely shallow to DEEEEEEP in one simple step and the waves can roll a child right into the deep water and the water is dark and you cannot see to save a child, so please do not bring your small kids there or if so, not near the beach. There are lots of other beaches safer for kids than CABO. I was so glad our kids were not there.
The hotel had a beautiful view of the pool, palm trees, the ocean was very visible. The hotel was VERY CLEAN. We liked this, no spiders, so smell of sewage the whole trip which I read about before going. Rose' only really has one restaurant, but this is because you are so close to town and there are a lot of restaurants there. Our favorites were Quesadillas and there was an outdoor lobster/steak place but oooh I can't remember the name. Some thing like Giglianos or Giliano's..that isn't it sorry - but it was lovely but expensive. Like $160.00 for lobster and steak dinner for two without alcohol. It was outside but they offered warm panchos which was great. None of the food was the best I've had but it was all pretty good and fairly reasonable overall.
We went horseboach riding at a place I think called Caracho's. It was good but a 2-3 hour trip so be prepared b/c you don't get off your horse and you go through some hills and so forth. We saved half throught the timeshare deal. The joke was after an hour I kept asking the guide "Donde' Rancho?" (where is the darn ranch). I was uncomfortable!! But I made it and it was fun.
Okay...the timeshare deal. Interesting. We immediately lost $20 when we got off the plane by 'reserving' a tour we didn't even want once we learned a little more later. Haha We thought he was helping us, but soon found out timeshare people are everywhere including the airports, the restaurants, the hotels - even our five star hotel. So although we had agreed to tour Del Arco (which looked pretty neat) we later found out the they lured us with great prices on fishing, dining out etc but the prices were actually more expensive than we could negotiate on our own so FORGET THAT. They greet you when you get off the plane and you don't realize for a while they do not work for the airport.
But we did tour the Sunset b/c it was the sister property of our hotel. And we negotiated for $200 for free food at the hotel, half price on horseback riding ($38 per person instead of $75), $20 parasailing, and we actually negotiated a couples massage at our hotel for only $100 and it was a one hour massage for two (although I'd stay away from the jacuzzi at the spa b/c it is slimey). But the spa was great and that is a good memory for us.
The tour is supposed to take an hour and a half but we were there 4 hours. I heard to get out quicker you just have to keep being rude and non interested. We acted interested b/c it was our first time. In the end although our sales person was nice he didn't take no easily and he kept trying to negotiate and renegotiate. We had absolutely no interest in returning to Cabo again and again b/c the beaches are so off-limits. Just not our cup of tea. They tell you it is such a great investment, but I have my doubts about that. Someone there, a worker at the hotel, actually told us people come for 2-3 years and lose interest and then they sell the timeshares really cheap on the internet. So I doubt it is a good investment. But very lovely properties.
My advice on the timeshare is to take a tour for the freebies but not allow yourself to be talked into something that makes no sense for your life. The maintenance fees every year are expensive in all timeshares. Maybe a retired couple or so...but for us we are in our 40's and we didn't like Cabo so much that we want to go there every year. They said if you don't come they will rent it for you and charge you 30% but tell me, how in the heck would you EVER know if that happened...b/c it isn't a single unit that you own that will sit empty if you are not there. It is a hook.
I'm happy if we returned, but not overjoyed. One disappointment is we bought a fishing trip off of the timeshare tour and they would not take us to fish for Blue Marlin b/c they said it was off season. But then when we returned we found out that the biggest problem is that our 28' boat was not designed for fishing for big fish. So next time we know to go directly to the harbor and to pay the $400-$500 for 4 people to a bigger boat that is absolutely fishing for blue marlin. That is probably the only reason we'd go back.
My last thought is it was cold there. Cooler waters so we saw seals and whales. But rarely was there not a chill in the air. I think we had a more tropical vacation in mind. And the clothes we brought were good b/c we had layers which was nice. But I'd check the weather before going. It was 60-70F when we were there in the first week of March.
