My husband and I came back from an 8-night trip to Cabo San Lucas. We stayed at a friend's timeshare at Solmar for 7 nights. Solmar is an old resort that was built in the 70's. It has 2 small swimming pools. But it is probably the most Mexican-like Gold Crown resort in the area. The buildings are white with Mexican color and décor outside and inside the room. The resort situated in a very convenient but yet very quiet and private location overlooking the Pacific Ocean. You cannot swim in the beach there (the Pacific Ocean side) because it is very wavy. But it's just nice watching the waves (huge waves at times) and listening to the sounds. We watched sunset on that beach which is unforgettable. We stayed at one of the frontal units on the ground floor. We can just slide open the patio door and walk out to the beach. We just love that! It is also very convenient to walk to town, about 10-15 minutes and you'll get to the marina. We definitely saved a lot of money from getting a taxi (the current minimum taxi fare is USD6). The new resort next door called Playa Grande has bigger and nicer swimming pools where Solmar guests can also use. The resort is close by but there's a courtesy shuttle bus that goes between Solmar and Playa Grande which you'd especially appreciate at 100F weather!
Walking on the beach along the Pacific Ocean, you can reach Finisterra resort in about 15 minutes. There're hammocks in front of that resort on the beach that we used. It was so relaxing laying on the hammocks. There're 3 very nice and big swimming pools in Finisterra. The nachos there are very yummy and very large portion (much larger than the ones in Solmar) that it fed both my husband and me (for USD8). The restaurant in Solmar, La Rocca, offers great service and quality food. The staff are very friendly, always smiling. And the food is very yummy. For less than USD40, you can get 3 grilled lobster tails. But be sure you dined on their grill night which is on Monday, Wed and Friday. The 3 lobster tails come with some veggies, mash potatoes, soup AND salad, though we traded salad with dessert which is very good as well. Great value, great food.
If you plan to do a lot of water activities in Cabo but don't want to spend too much money, you may want to sit into those timeshare presentations. We were there for 8 nights and we spent 3 mornings sitting in a presentation. We got breakfast buffet in those 3 mornings and a free tour to those beautiful 5-star resorts. The going "rate" for the gifts that you'd get by attending the presentation is around USD300. You'd need to bargain with them (those people who invite you on the street or at the airport) in order to get a steal. My husband is a great "negotiator" and we got all of our water activities paid for (including snorkeling tours, sunset cruise, kayak rental, parasailing, minisubmarine and even swimming with dolphins which is around USD165 per person!). We also got $200 cash and $200 restaurant certificates, and free taxi/shuttle from & to the airport.
Some good tips to share. Be sure you bring plenty of small USD bills ($1, $5, $10) because you'll be using a lot of them for tipping and paying for food. The restaurants accept USD but they don't have change (they should have since most customers pay USD, but they just won't give you change in USD!). If you'd like to exchange pesos, do that when you're in Mexico, the rate is much better and there is no fee. We found a reasonably priced convenient store (not too far from Solmar) to get our drinking water supply. It's around the corner on the right before you turn onto Blvd Marina from town (can't remember the name, Super…something). The price is almost half of what you can get in the stores along marina. We also bought cereal and milk for breakfast which is safe to drink. We bought a phone card to call home at one of the pharmacy stores along the marina. USD10 for 40minutes calling the U.S.. Good value compares to others for 25 minutes only.
