We wrapped up a trip to Baja Sur over Easter week with a four day stay at the Solmar Suites and loved it. A courteous and professional staff checked us in and showed us to our room. We had a very spacious first floor room with a sliding door and tile patio that opened onto a gorgeous and private beach. The room was very large, had 2 queens, a separate sitting area, and a large beautifully tiled bath.
The setting of this hotel is unbelievable. It's sort of built into the rock formations common in that part of Cabo and is separated from the Arch and divorce beach by only a couple of hundred yards. As mentioned, the beach is private (unlike the rest of the beaches in Cabo San Lucas). Most of the time, there is no one else on the beach. The only negative is that you can't swim or even wade there due to dangerous rip tides.
The hotel has two spacious, clean and very attractive beach side pools with swim up bars. A delightful happy hour was always welcome at the end of a busy day, but the service could definately have been better. You have to make allowances because everything moves a little slower in Mexico, but sometimes the service in both the bar and restaurants was attrocious.
Speaking of restaurants, the onsite restauarant is a bit pricey, but breakfast, lunch and especially dinners there were excellent. Don't miss the Fiesta night on Saturdays!
Upon check in we were surprised to lern that the booking we made on Travelocity came with several dinners at off-site, but affiliated restaurants. We tried the Italian one (I forget the name) and it was O.K., but nothing special. The service though, was even slower than the on-site restaurant.
We avoided the hords of guys in town selling time shareslike the plague, but did take our conceirge up on attending a time share sales pitch at the beautiful new resort next door called Playa Grande. It took a little over an hour, was very low key and we got a $100 credit to use against our food and bar bill. Well worth the time, I'd say.
All-in-all, this was a great place to stay and we loved Cabo and what we saw in Baja Sur. I think our roon was about $160 per night, actually very reasonable given the ammenities and setting. Make sure you do one of the sunset cruises. We took a large catamaran and were fortunate to see and tail one last grey whale and her baby at the very end of the whale season. What a joy to follow them as they repeatedly breached as the sun was setting!
As long as I'm making suggestions, if you have a rental car and are a little adventerous, consider driving north a couple of hours to La Paz. This charming city is the capital of Baja Sur and seems to be a popular tourist destination for locals. There are few American tourists and the locals were very friendly and helpful. I've got to write a review for Las Gardenias Hotel in La Paz, so see that if you want a few more details on La Paz. Trust me you'll love this city!
