We decided, last minute, to go and stay in Cabo with some other family members. This person has several RCI timeshares and was able to arrange a last minute trade for us to stay at the Solmar. Plans were made, and it was only then that I decided to read some reviews of the place. I was seriously starting to regret our decision. So with serious hesitation, off we went.
Not sure what all the complaining is about!!!
Yes, my husband got the timeshare push when we checked in. They scheduled us for breakfast the next morning, but we had no intention of going. They called our room one time to see if we wanted to reschedule another meeting and we said, "no thanks." That was it. No other timeshare pressure. (although the gal that spoke with my husband about it would look at us with some contempt whenever we passed by her).
We were in a 1 bedroom/2 bath "suite", 1st floor, overlooking the pool with a tiny glimpse of the ocean. We were 20 steps from the pool and thought the location was great. We were traveling with two children under age 2 and the room was plenty big for us and all our junk! We had a kitchenette, with a good size fridge and it suited us just fine. It was clean, housekeeping was wonderful...she did our dishes, baby bottles and all for us! The bed wasn't the best, but we had previously stayed at the Mar de Cortez in town, and those were the worst beds I've ever slept on! It was a basic and comfortable room (much better than the Mar). My only complaint, which isn't really a complaint is that the tv is in the bedroom, and for the sake of the kids, I would have preferred it in the sitting area. However, we were on vacation, so tv watching wasn't what we were there to do!!!
The service at the pool nearest our room was slow. Friendly, but slow. We found that it was just easier for us to buy some six-packs of Tecate in the store at the hotel and serve ourselves! The bar will give you the limes! Plus, its cheaper than buying them at the bar! For you mixed drink folks, I guess this won't work. I think that the service was a little quicker at the main bar as they had many more waiters, while at our pool, it was just a one-man show. Anyway, we had no problems with the service at any of the bar/restaurant facilities at the resort. After all, its Mexico and we're on vacation!
They have a great kiddie pool, that was heated. We didn't even go to the pool at the main bar. There were always plenty of lounge chairs available around the pool and plenty of umbrellas for shade. Of note, we went over to the pool at the Playa Grande one day where my family was staying, and we couldn't find a lounge chair at all! Plus, there appeared to be lots of "saving seats" going on, and nobody actually ever using the chairs. I think that's plain rude.
We ate breakfast and lunch a few times at Solmar. Everything we had was fine. I did enjoy the beef tacos! We never did eat any dinner at the hotel. We did go to their owned restaurants Galeon and Romeo y Julietta. I prefered Galeon. Important to note, that if you show them your key card from your room, you receive a 10% discount off your dinner. We only found this out from my mom who was staying at the Playa grande, so I'm not sure if this is info that freely volunteer!
Oh, one other thing....the walk up and down the hill into town.
We did it every day, with 2 strollers and didn't find it to be difficult at all! I'm not in the best shape either.....
The only other complaint I have is that the portable cribs they provide are hazardous! I was nervous to have my children sleep in them. Next time, we'll probably take a portable playpen....
As you can see, my complaints are so minor, and really only pertinant to me. The only reason I didn't rate this as an excellent, is I think its realistic for people not to go to this place and be expecting the Ritz or say, a Westin. Its a great, quiet location away from the hustle and craziness of downtown, the ocean is amazing and the views are incredible. The staff was pleasant, and they keep the grounds looking wonderful. Now, if they only could have done something about the weather!!!!! Unfortunately, we had lots of cloudyness and cool weather. Our last day it rained for over 12 hours. Bummer.
I would recommend staying at the Solmar to anyone!!!
