My family and I dined at Maro’s on July 1st. It was definitely the most fun meal we had during our week stay. If you are looking for a relaxed reasonably-priced meal with good food and outrageously welcoming and attentive service then Maro’s is a great choice.
Maro’s is sandwiched between Lucky’s and the Crazy Lobster on Hidalgo Street and it’s easy to miss the sign. Not to worry, though – if you are anywhere nearby, Ignacio will find you and try to talk you in to the restaurant. He succeeded with us, and we were immediately seated and had Bulldogs poured before we could even begin to study the menu. The menu is pretty basic – shrimp, grilled lobster, grilled fish and grilled steaks (and combinations thereof) – but what the do they do extremely well. Everything was perfectly prepared and served hot from the kitchen. The portions are large -- you get your money's worth. Ignacio and the other servers make sure that the water glasses are full, plate are cleared promptly and of course that the Bulldog’s keep flowing. I’m pretty sure that if you asked for a back-rub during your meal, someone would gladly do that, too! All the while the staff was laughing and joking with us. Maro himself spent a long time at the table talking with us and served us a complimentary shrimp dish (I don’t remember what it was called but it was served in a stone pot and was delicious). Everyone thanked us and hugged us as we left. The whole thing was like dining at a friend’s house where the friend made a special meal for the occasion.
BTW – the folks at Maro’s consider their Trip Advisor rating to be the equivalent of a Michelin star. The actually keep a binder of the Trip Advisor comments and show it to passersby to tempt them into the restaurant. It’s nice to see a restaurant that understands the value of giving customers a good experience.
