“Warm & friendly. Best coastal/village location possible!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2013

We were warned (when we booked back in Feb) that our room was tiny, which is why we only paid £80, but actually it was small but had everything we needed. Clean & cosy. Nice bathroom with lovely soft towels & products. We were there with a group to celebrate a birthday & the staff couldn't do more to help. Delicious fish & chips for supper, and lavish breakfast (thrown in). Highly recommend this place. Location: nestled in valley, 10 mins walk from secluded stoney beach with great cafe. Totally spoilt. It almost feels exclusive. And this was high season. Reluctant to share this info really as it currently feels undiscovered!

Yes the service was good as was the food. The room was large, comfortable and clean and the bathroom large and well equipped. We had a superior room on the ground floor, however, and the noise from the room above was loud: you could hear their TV and every footstep. Not good. This is a pub with rooms and hard though they try to sell the restaurant side, it is just a different menu in the pub dining room. The rooms are expensive too, so check out the prices before you get too deep in.

Room Tip: Avoid ground floor rooms in the outside block. They suffer from noise from the upstairs rooms

Knowing the Masons Arms is very popular, we booked a table for two over two weeks before our visit on a Wednesday evening. When we turned up, we were told that we would be seated in the bar as they had overbooked the restaurant. We were shown to a table where we had to sit side by side facing out to the bar. Not ideal. The second service issue was when we ordered our food/wine and were asked if we wanted to run a tab on our credit card. Standard in many bars but we had booked the restaurant! When we got our starters (seafood cocktail) we only had a large knife and fork so I asked for a spoon. The waiter seemed surprised and brought us one large spoon. Shortly after another waiter from the restaurant brought the right cutlery. The food was very good but we were left very dissatisfied by the overall experience. We realised after we were seated in the bar that there had been an empty table for two in the restaurant - presumably this was being kept for more deserving guests. We mentioned the issue of being asked about running a tab when we were paying the bill and the barman asked if we wanted to speak to the manager about it. Not much point at that stage but I doubt we will go back.

We came here hoping for food on a very busy night, we hadn't booked but were welcomed by the bar staff and assured we'd get a table and food. We didn't wait long before a table became free, and we were bought warm olive bread to pick on. Our burgers came quickly and were lovely, not greasy, nice chips and a gorgeous cumin relish dip. Cosy pub in a stunning location.

The hotel I found acceptable and clean, if a little over priced. Most of the staff were quite welcoming and the location was fantastic, however, our stay was completely tarnished by the girl with short pink hair on reception. She made both myself and my wife feel invisable on separate occasions by ignoring us while typing on her phone or talking to another member of staff and on one occasion both myself and my wife witnessed her making very racist remarks to another member of staff right in front of us and in clear ear shot. Even the other member of staff looked disgusted.not only is racism in the work place unprofessional, it's also illegal, and is the sole reason I will never return to the masons arms.

Stayed for 4 nights in cottage room 7 (in a row of thatched cottages set back from the main building). Lovely outlook into gardens through patio doors - chairs and tables set out to encourage you to sit out in the sun in the morning and to cool off in the evening. Being slightly away from the pub and restaurant made it very peaceful. Good parking - very important in this neck of the woods!
Very comfortable bed - in the superior room - and bathroom with both bath and shower cubicle and plenty of room.
Wonderful breakfasts served in the restaurant. Enjoyed evening meals in both the bar and restaurant - when it is busy you must remember to book.
Staff were friendly and helpful without being pushy.
Location brilliant for a complete break - mobile reception only available if you stand in the sea! Lots of walks of all lengths - some perfect for the evening. Ask for the walking map at reception.
Visit the Old Bakery for afternoon tea - the beach café for ice cream - and Beer for what else...a cold glass of beer (you'll have earned it after the walk over the cliffs). We enjoyed the tour of Beer quarry ( great guide, Bob).

Room Tip: A superior cottage room - bigger bed and bathroom.
