“Lovely little lodge with amazing view on the river”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2013

Mang was our driver from Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw and advised us during the trip to stay at his lodge.
We had a quick look around and decided to give it a go: it was less than 10 minutes walk from both the bus station and the bridge (the center), it was clean, charming, had indeed an amazing view and was just USD10 a night ex breakfast!

We stayed 3 nights in room 1, first room in the ground floor.
There are 6 rooms in total split over 2 floors: ground floor and first floor. 3 of them have double beds.
They all have hot water, which if you ask me, is a great deal especially if you've travelled Laos on budget.

There is a little 'bar' area with two hammocks adjacent to the lodge where Mang's wife serves breakfasts and where you can buy beer Lao, water, biscuits, etc.

Mang also runs a little tour agency, right after the bridge. We did two tours with him: the 100 waterfalls (a nice walk in the country side with 2 stops in local villages, and that also includes a boat trip) and the bamboo rafting where you actually participate to building your own bamboo raft and go down the Nam Ou River while enjoying a yummy BBQ (wish I could spice the meat the way they did, it was simply to die for).

The lodge is a friendly family owned place, where people come and go but take the time to share their experiences.

We really enjoyed our stay there and highly recommend it. We quite liked that it was a bit away from all other lodges and hotels, as it felt a bit more authentic: you have walk down a little ground path to reach it (bring your flash light, you'll need it at night!), right along the Nong Khiaw school, which gives you the 'everyday life' feeling.

Only downside maybe is that the walls are a bit thin, and the mattresses are on the hard side. But then again you fall asleep to the sound of the river...

There is no wifi but it's on Mang's to do list :)

Don't miss it!

Room Tip: I would go for the rooms on the first floor.

The Nam Ou River Lodge is truly a gem: WIth very big rooms, mosquito net and hot shower this place is great value for money in Nong Khiaw. And this is if you do not include the view on the Nam Ou river, which is breathtaking and the very friendly owner and his wife, who are always open for questions and can arrange just about anything you might want to do in the area.
There is "not much to do" in Nong Khiaw, apart from enjoying the scenery that is! This goes for the most of Lao though and the area of Nong Khiaw is very charming. You can enjoy boat rides to and past small villages, enjoy some good food, or a relaxing massage after a hard days work.
Even keeping up with the best soccer matches in Europe is not a problem, as mr. Mang is happy to share his tv and drinks with guests for the big matches...
Wi-fi is available and water is provided in a spotless clean room just outside the village in a quiet peaceful surrounding.

Nothing to complain really, but I would recommend that you bring a small light for getting to your room at night.

Wow, what a place. Rooms are beautiful the view is breathtaking right on the best spot on the Namou River. This is with no doubt the best place I've stayed in Asia. Missing this out is unaffordable. As my visa was running out I could only stay one night but I'll be back. See you again, Nam Ou River Lodge!!!!

When Mr Mang asked us at the bus station to have a look at his recently opened guesthouse, we walked with him. When we arrived (only 8 min walking from the bus station) we saw mr Mang didn't exaggerate! Fantastic! The view is amazing, better than in-town because there's only nature you see. And it's just 5 min walk to the 'centre' of Nong Khiaw. You can borrow a tube for free and lay in the river, or relax in a hammock. If you arrive you must take a look (be warned.. You will stay longer than you was planning to!)

I planed only staying a night in Nong Khiaw but after meeting Mr Mang the oner of this guest house I stayed a week and then came back for a few more days. The advantage of staying here is you are a little out of town but not to far so it's quit and you can swim in the river were in town you can not.Mr Mang organized a trek to the water fall which was such a great day also a day building a bamboo raft to float down the river on so much fun.this town is the best spot in Laos and Mr Mang the most helpful that for sure.

I planned to stay at this guesthouse for only two days, but ended up staying a whole week. The scenery is the most beautiful I've had so far - the Nam Ou River is only 15 metres from the rooms!
Mr. Mang is the friendliest person you can ever talk to. Doing a trek with this guy is amazing. His big knowledge and good English do that you always feel safe together with him.
I could live at the guesthouse for years and if you visit Laos it is so much worth it!

This review is receiving two stars only because it is a beautiful spot and the room was clean, minus significant mold in the bathroom. While you will get marvelous river views, you will also have to deal with the owner, Mr. Muang who is routinely hounding you to buy his 'full service' items. While staying at his place, any question we asked him regarding future travels or local to-do's turned into him pushing hard to sell us on one of '"his" products, so don't expect the most reliable information from this guesthouse. For example, bus tickets, which he is NOT selling in conjunction with the service providers, he charged each of us (2 people) 180,000 kip for a Local bus ticket to Sam Neua when the price was really 110,000 kip, as we found out upon boarding the bus with a friend who did not pre-purchase. We should have seen the problem earlier, as the ticket was not the sort of bus ticket that you see elsewhere, but a standard receipt you see for Guesthouse payments, that by the way was not accepted by the bus driver. (Mr.Muang's friend paid the driver). On that note, as bus information cannot readily be found in town, at the bus station, or on the internet, this bus can be picked up along the main road in-town between 9pm and midnight (big window b/c it is coming from Vientiane), and the price was 110,000 kip at the time of writing. Bottom line, the great views at this guesthouse are compromised by routinely being pressured into purchases by the unscrupulous owner.
