the Patok caves or Tham Pha thok is located about 5 km from the village centre. It can be reached by bicycle and is a great way to travel in Nong Khiaw. A short walk from the main road and crossing a stream will lead us to the main entrance to the cave which is above ground level. A steep flight of steps bring us to the huge caven . Torches are needed as the interior is vast and dark. there are no signs of bats . The caves are used as a shelter by the villagers and pathet lao soldiers during the American bombings of the country but we see no signs or remains of the war . . We cannot really go any deeper into the caves as it is very steep and pose a danger . All in its a wonderful feeling to be able to partake a bit of history as we enter the caves.
