“Couldn't be better”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2013

From the minute we started looking for a small hotel online to attend my niece's wedding, everything went smoothly at Casa de la Cuesta. It was easy to navigate the site and see the rooms and easy to book and send a deposit. I already had a Paypal account so within minutes we were confirmed. We discovered the room we reserved was originally the master bedroom and the view from our bed was the night lights of downtown San Miguel! So beautiful! Also, the rooms (we checked them all out for a family reunion mas tarde) all have lovely bathrooms and lighthearted whimsical feeling as well as the down-home comfort of old Mexico.
Our stay at Casa de la Cuesta changed my feelings about Bed and Breakfasts. We felt like family instead of interlopers or like we were being forced to meet people that we had nothing in common with or were boring. SMA just doesn't attract those kinds of people and Heidi and Bill are fascinating bright people. The tour of the mask museum - an attached building, was enlightening and educational. Heidi's folk art store is much more than that. She told us stories and gave us insight to the artisans she represents. You wanted to buy a piece of each but there was no pressure if you didn't. The Levasseurs simply love what they are doing and it is evident in the food and the ambience and hospitality.

My wife and I spent 5 nights at Casa de la Cuesta. We were in San Miguel for a wedding but the true highlight of the trip was Casa de la Cuesta. The Mask Museum, the Folk Art Gallery, the hummingbirds...not to mention the delicious breafasts, all helped to make our stay magical. We are hoping to return soon for a longer stay.

From the moment we were welcomed at the door of Casa de la Cuesta, we felt as though we were family. Heidi and Bill provided the warmth and comfort of a home away from home. My daughter had married a young Mexican man here in Sydney and we had hoped to find somewhere special to hold a Mexican ceremony for his family and friends to share. Searching online, we had no idea just how perfect Casa de la Cuesta would be. We booked all the guest rooms at Casa de la Cuesta for the weekend (and some for a little longer). In the course of email correspondence leading up to our stay, Heidi and Bill offered advice on a wedding planner, and helped us to choose a wedding feast which their own staff catered on the day. They transformed their guest house into an incredible venue for the most amazing wedding ever. Their lower courtyard provided the perfect ambiance for an Aztec shaman to preside over an original Aztec wedding ceremony, while the larger, upper courtyard was transformed into a dance floor for the eighty guests to party into the night.
Aside from the wedding, Heidi helped us to pre arrange visits to local places of interest and even made bookings for us at the local beauty parlour for the big day. Bill’s knowledge of Mexican ceremonial history is unsurpassed and his Mask Museum, at the rear of Casa de la Cuesta, is a treasure chamber of ceremonial masks, some hundreds of years old and all genuine artefacts used in actual ceremonies throughout the land. Tours are arranged on request and Bill is on hand to give additional information as required. Heidi works with local artisans and helps to bring knowledge of their traditional arts and craft to the attention of a wider audience through her workshop and gallery, also there at the guesthouse. In fact, the whole of the guesthouse is a gallery, with all the walls in the guest rooms and the verandas displaying examples of Heidi and Bill’s own collection of wonderful local artworks. The rooms were all comfortable and colourfully decorated, and being on the high side, the views over the town were spectacular.
We found San Miguel de Allende to be a magical place, full of colour and history. We loved walking through the ancient cobbled streets, looking at the churches and the shops by day, and joining with the locals, dancing in the town square in the evenings. There is an abundance of restaurants in the town, with a wide choice of cuisines and delicious food, and plenty of surprising little alleyways, filled with beautiful examples of the local artworks to admire and purchase.
Our stay in San Miguel de Allende, and especially Casa de la Cuesta , was all too short. We felt that we had made new friends of Heidi and Bill and now we have a new Mexican family, there are plenty of excuses for us to go back again, and stay for longer next time.

Room Tip: All the rooms are spacious and comfortable. The Colibri room has the most magnificant views and the...

Our recent stay at Casa de la Cuesta was outstanding. We thoroughly enjoyed every aspect including the beautiful building, rooms, and art. We also greatly appreciated the delicious home cooked breakfasts. Our hosts Heidi and Bill could not have been more accommodating to our many questions. The views from the balconies of the city below are captivating, especially during a sunset. We wish we could have stayed longer, but look forward to returning soon.

We loved our three-day stay at this magical retreat--like sleeping in an art museum! Rooms are all tastefully decorated with an abundance of textile arts, tin work, carvings and masks, as are all common areas. The Colibri room has awesome views of San Miguel's churches, blooming purple jacaranda trees and soft hills in the distance. The courtyard garden, with its impressive array of bold cacti and succulents, leafy vines, soothing fountains and seating areas tucked in here and there, is a gardener's delight. A delicious hot breakfast concoction surprised us every morning, though it was hard not to indulge in the toasty granola, fresh fruit and 3 kinds of yogurt that preceded it. An honor bar provides wine and other cool refreshments at the end of a long day of hill-walking.
Owners Heidi and Bill are enthusiastic supporters and collectors of traditional folk art and most generous with their time in discussing customs, techniques and the work of individual artisans. They are genuinely interested in ensuring their guests make the most of their time in San Miguel, providing directions, tips, restaurant suggestions, tour ideas and answering endless questions about their wonderful home.

Room Tip: The Colibri room has a fantastic view, especially at sunset and twilight.

The decision to choose Casa de la Cuesta for our February 2013 visit to San Miguel De Allende was based on the exceptionally good reviews on Trip Advisor.
Even though this B&B is very nice and the owners are doing their best to be accommodating, the place has a few drawbacks.
Don't count on being near restaurants or coffee places, there is nothing in the immediate vicinity.
Its location is on a very steep hill and it can be a problem for anybody who has difficulties walking on hilly cobblestone streets. Perhaps taking taxis is the answer and that's what we did.
Also, once you are inside, be prepared to climb many stairs before you reach the rooms on the upper level. If you have any problems climbing the stairs, do not choose "Escondido room". The picture of "Escondido" looks lovely on Casa de la Cuesta website, but what it doesn't show is the staircase you need to use to get from this room to the washroom. For some of you, who are not that good on your feet in the middle of the night, stay away !!! After surviving our first night, we were lucky to move to a vacant room on the lower level. For those of you who don't like hard beds, be prepared to suffer. These beds are REALLY HARD. Heidi was kind enough to give us a layer of softer foam on top of our mattress..... however, the bed was still pretty hard. A word of warning in case you are sensitive to noise. The neighbourhood dogs bark indiscriminately day and night. You may want to bring your ear plugs. Otherwise, you can see from the pictures on the website, the place indeed is beautiful, full of lovely artifacts. You are also served every morning the most delicious breakfast.

You can't stay in a lovelier place. The rooms are charming. You're surrounded by Mexican folk art and an amazing view of San Miguel. You wake to the sound of the fountain in the courtyard with hummingbirds feeding outside the door. Wonderful breakfast too. The only downside is that this great place is up a steep hill and once inside there are two more staircases. But you can easily take a cab up to the door. Walking down is easy and you're at the Artisans market in five minutes and the Jardin in ten. All in all its really worth it to get to stay at this special place.
