“Stunning place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2012

Casa de la Cuesta is a magical place! Every room in the entire building is colorful and cozy! Every bedroom is tastefully decorated with such emphasis in details. There are so many areas to hang out and relax; you can grab a drink or a bottle of wine from the guest fridge (add it to your tab), catch the sunset and watch the views from the rooft top balcony; amazing! The sound of the fountain centrally located in the open air courtyard craddles you at night. Bill and Heidi are excellent hosts. Bill's ceremonial mask museum located in the building is exceptional! This is a must stay when visiting San Miguel de Allende. It's centrally located so you don't need your car to walk around town and it's very safe. The breakfast is amazing; from fresh fruit, yogurt and granola to a traditional Mexican breakfast all prepared and served to guests in the wonderful dinnig room table, served by Bill and Heidi themselves.
I will definitely recommend anyone to stay at Casa de la Cuesta and I look forward to returning again someday! And don't forget to schedule a massage with Monica at Casa de la Cuesta!

My friends stayed at the hotel and also had a wedding lunch there. Once you enter the very understated entrance, you enter into a beautiful surprise. The rooms are large and decorated very well, the views are amazing and the gallery with artwork is very impressive. The owners are extremely friendly and I will definitely stay there the next time I visit San Miguel de Allende.

We had a wedding in san miguel de allende and stayed in case de la cuesta for a couple of days. The stay was amazing, very nice rooms (all of them) and amazing views over the area and city. Stay in the shade in the garden, chill on the rooftop terrace (more than one) or rest and read one of their books on a soft loungy sofa.

The photos cant tell how amazing this apartment is, dont doubt, just go here if you visit san miguel. Bill and Heidi are very nice and helpfull people. In the morning they provide a typical mexican breakfast on the main table in the kitchen, from fresh fruist and yoghurts to fresh made tortilla's, eggs... changes every day, delicious! You can get cold drinks, beer and tequila any day of the moment from the public fridge, just note it on your tap.

Again, dont doubt, just go!

Room Tip: Get the room on top in the middle of the building, very nice view over the city!

When my wife and I arrived at Casa de la Cuesta, we were stunned by the entrance - an incredible museum-like staircase of illuminated masks. We emerged into sunshine, walking through several inner courtyards, on up to our 2nd floor bedroom, with its balcony door opening to a breath-taking view of San Miguel.
Like everything in the house, the bedroom was full of beautiful hand-picked Mexican art and folklore. The bathroom was luxurious, beautifully tiled with a large, full bath. For a traveler after a weary day of traveling, it was paradise.
The breakfasts were awesome, 3-course Mexican meals with fresh fruit, enchiladas, etc, with attentive and very interesting hosts - Bill & Heidi, long-time residents of Mexico and very, very knowledgeable about art and indigenous culture. Bill's hobby collecting Mexican masks has grown into a 500-exhibit private mask museum that he has set up on the next-door property, and is more than happy to show to guests. Upstairs from the mask museum, Heidi has a folkart studio where she represents contemporary indigenous artists from various parts of Mexico.
Both Bill and Heidi were wonderful hosts, always available at breakfast and throughout the day, happy to provide information about getting around and what was happening in San Miguel.
Our stay was a wonderful 3-day oasis of comfort. We have been traveling and staying in B&Bs in North America and Europe for many years, and this is one of the best B&Bs, by far, that we have ever come across.

Staying in Bill and Heidi’s magical ‘house on the hill’ fed my soul. Their establishment was undoubtedly the most delicious place I have ever stayed in. I’m reluctant to label it a ‘hotel’ or a ‘bed and breakfast’ because it is so much more – an extraordinary treasure-filled home, a celebration of beauty, a living work of art which breathes the warmth and colour and history of Mexico. From the comfy burnt umber leather chairs on the patio, to the rich ochre and rust and slate blue walls, to the intricate inlaid tiles on the stairs, to the ceramic soap dishes in the bathroom, to the folk art and masks on the walls, to the hummingbird feeders outside my door – every detail, every object has been carefully selected and arranged to delight the senses and soothe the soul.

Sitting down to breakfast in the morning was always a pleasure. While I struggled with some of the unfamiliar Mexican dishes, the intimate atmosphere in which the food was served around the communal table brimming with gorgeously crafted crockery, made for a joyful start to the day. As a host, Bill (Heidi was away) was superb. Unflappable, knowledgable, accessible, witty, warm, he quickly averted my contact lens crisis – I’d left mine at home, and seriously doubted whether I would find disposable lenses in the heart of Mexico, but Bill searched and found and went off to collect substitute lenses for me from an optician in town. And when my daughter and I got lost in San Miguel’s maze of cobbled streets, Bill was there, on the phone, cheerfully directing us out of the maze.

Fast forward a few weeks and I’m sipping a latte in a trendy coffee shop in Los Angeles, perched on a square grey cushion, my laptop on a silver grey metal table. The shop walls, inside and out, are grey. Most of the coffee drinkers are clothed in grey. The windows are framed in heavy black metal, while the buildings and the parking lot outside are – grey. Everything around me seems drained of colour and history. All this grey does not feed my soul. I need to go back to Casa de la Cuesta, and contemplate the mysterious power of beauty.

Room Tip: All the rooms are magical

Casa de la Cuesta is certainly a unique place in several aspects: decoration, view, style, food (outstanding breakfast) and very importantly hosted by Bill (we did not meet Heidi since she was travelling). In addition, Bill is a serious collector of Mexican masks and has a museum at the back of the main house. You cannot miss his personal tour to the museum - it is an exceptional cultural treat. Bill is a wonderful host and a chat with him was always delightful; we can only imagine his wife Heidi to be the same. Consider that the house requires a few up-hill streets to get there (just a couple, not bad at all), so plan your days wisely. The walk is worthwhile the view once you get there. We stayed at the Colibrí room, with exceptional view, and our kids at the Escondido, well selected so one of my sons could have quite time and space for studying. Our outmost recommendation!
