Owner description: We are open BY APPOINTMENT only but usually have an Open House the last weekend of every month from noon to 5 pm. Please check our weekly ad in Atencion for contact information. One of the largest and highest quality folk art collections in all of Mexico, on a gorgeous country property in an architecturally spectacular, much-published building, Galeria Atotonilco is a ten-minute drive north of town. Voted the #1 gallery in San Miguel for the second year, in June 2012, it is an eye-dazzling array of a huge variety of folk art, from funny to exquisite, from all over Mexico. Folk art is a direct route to the true heart of Mexico: it's history, it's traditions, it's myths and legends, it's diverse cultures. Items in all price ranges can be shipped anywhere. We suggest you visit us early in your trip when you have not spent all your money and when shipping can be arranged if necessary. Even if you know little about folk art, we guarantee you will be amazed at the diversity, and we love sharing our knowledge with you. In addition to folk art, you will see country antique furniture, vintage textiles of great beauty, and historic photographs of 19th century Mexico.Within a mile is the historic church of Atotonilco, and the gorgeous country restaurant, Nirvana. Plan to spend at least an hour in our gallery. The time will fly by. Many visitors report that this gallery was the highlight of their visit to San Miguel.

Galleria Atotonilco features the finest collection of Mexican folk art in the San Miguel area. The owners have assembled a unique collection based on their exceptional knowledge of the artisans. The gallery also features glassware form Jalisco that is hard to resist. Visiting the gallery is always a pleasure.

“A fabulous place to spend an afternoon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2013

I have visited this gallery many times and also have taken many of my friends that are visiting from abroad. You can always find new and interesting indigenous fine art made by unknown artist. A beautiful and comprehensive collection of Mexican arts and crafts from all the different regions in Mexico. A great place to shop for those beautiful and very fine pieces of Mexican folk art not found in regular stores.

“Galeria Atotonilco-Well worth the trip!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2013

In this beautiful country setting you will find yourself immersed in the finest pieces of Mexican Folk Art from every corner of Mexico. The owners drive to small villages and discover Artist who might never be discovered and bring their high quality Art to their gallery. You can't go here without choosing a piece that you want to bring home. We find something every visit!
An added plus is viewing the grounds and part of their home where the Gallery has an annex.
Time your visit with lunch or an early dinner and you can eat at nearby Nirvana or Casa de Aves.
Also you can combine a visit to the Sanctuary of Atotonilco.
If you don't have a car finding a Taxi to/from is very easy and only 10/15 minute ride.

“Fabulous folk art in unique setting with a caveat”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2013

This folk art collection (for purchase) is fantastic. The setting of the house and "barns" is lovely and architecturally interesting. There are many hidden gems in the collection and a huge variety in both regionally source and price. My one caveat is that when I made several purchases, one of which required shipping, the owner was so busy ringing up other customers and our guide was ready to leave that he told me to take it to the local DHL office where it would be the same price as if the item, a large, glass piece, was shipped by him. Turned out the lady at DHL didn't know who he was and price was more than double ($150) of the amount he told me shipping would have been if he had taken the time to take my shipping information. That left me with a bad feeling for an otherwise wonderful experience.

We are very sorry for this misunderstanding about shipping. We virtually always arrange shipping ourselves, but are unable to do this if a customer does not have the time. We never send customers to DHL for shipping, and I'm sure did not refer this customer to them. We have a special relationship with the packing and shipping service, La Union. Our discounted price, which they honor with any referral from us, includes packing, shipping, and insurance. La Union does use DHL for shipping, but we never send customers directly to DHL, only to our reliable, low cost packer and shipper, La Union.

“Galeria Atotonilco Best Mexican Folk Art Gallery”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2013

If you are visiting San Miguel de Allende in central Mexico (4 hours north of Mexico City by bus), and are interested in Mexican folk art, this is THE gallery to visit. I know of no other. Located next door to historic Atotonilco, only a few minutes by car/taxi from San Miguel, you will be astounded by the quality and scope of the collection, the affordable prices. It's hard to convey the extraordinary range of work by Mexico's finest artisans being offered here, continually refreshed by the owner, Mayer Shacter. Shipping can be arranged for larger works. If you want an authentic piece of Mexico, I can recommend no better place to start your search.
