“A restful, delightful, respite - and the food is tasty too!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2013

An afternoon comida at Nirvana is like a mini-vacation and retreat. The food is creatively presented and flavorful. It is a place to linger and one of favorites.

“Gorgeous restaurant food disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 28, 2013

What an amazing garden setting where it is hard to choose as the indoor space is just as lovely. Excellent service, mighty fine Margaritas, and very disappointing food. Will go back just to revisit the peacocks and wander around this magical property.

“Afternoon lunch on the lawn”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2013

This was a real treat, after a dusty motorcycle ride, to pull into this beautiful oasis, only a short distance from San Miguel. The natural beauty of the place, the ivy growing over iron railings, the green lawn, the old cacti gardens, tables with umbrellas, looking out over the countryside. I could not have been more lovely. And the food was delicious! The arugula salad is perfect, and the chocolate tantine, a chocolate lover 's dream! We met the owner, Juan Carlos, who graciously invited us to walk around the grounds. The service was great. It was a beautiful afternoon and we will return. A very romantic place, especially if you like old Mexico ambiance and graciousness.

“Amazing luncheon....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

We had a group luncheon at this location and everything was flawless from the quality and flavor of the food and the amazing hibiscus margaritas, the Chef-Patron took care of us at all times make sure all our guest had a great time. The place is lovely, we were seating in the little terrace and everyone was amazed by the lovely gardens. We did a quick walk to see the spa and the rooms and I definitively want to come back and stay there.

“Disappointed 3 out of 4 times”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

Normally we would not return to a restaurant after 2 disappointing (or downright bad) experiences, but when our friends who love the place said that's where they wanted to take some visiting friends whom we wanted to meet, we were agreeable. Besides, we've wanted to love this place because its so beautiful.
Over the past 3 years, we've always been in either Feb or March as that's when we're typically visiting San Miguel. We've been once for dinner and today was the third time for late lunch. We've wondered for a couple years now how they can stay in business, as the restaurant's been almost empty every time with little evidence of overnight guests.
The plusses: gorgeous grounds, very nice dining areas inside and out, casual but gracious seating and their own beautiful line of hand-made ceramic dinner ware. Some of the items on their too-large menu* have been good (lasagna and risotto) but I've felt very disappointed 3 out of 4 times.
The minuses: very lackadaisical service this last time, from a very young waiter - not unfriendly, but you had to be assertive in asking for everything - he never once stopped by the table to see if we needed anything. I had to ask for a clean fork, we had to ask for cream to be brought, had to ask for a water refill.. and the restaurant had only ONE other table of guests. The menu reads like an encylopedia - with no less than 40 entrees including deer, ostrich, duck and the standard beef and chicken dishes, Mexican and Thai selections, about 15 - 20 seafood dishes, AND 10 pasta choices -- what are they trying to prove? Over 3 visits we've been totally non-plussed with their Thai soup, Cowboy steak, scallops with pistachio sauce, caprese salad. My partner's comment this last time: he thought he might've liked the ostrich, but wasnt' sure because it was so overwhelmed by a sweet sauce.
One exceptional item I've now ordered 3 times is on the dessert menu (I always have room for dessert at Nirvana because I usually don't finish my entree.) Their own basil tangerine sorbet - is out of this world and unique - and the richest vanilla ice cream accompaniment sets it off perfectly.
Conclusion: I really doubt we'll give Nirvana a fifth try - unless its just for dessert, or we limit ourselves to their pasta.
