Built on a volcanic hill with sweeping vistas, the site overlooks an arid landscape surrounded by mountains, cactus and mesquite. A good walk through the landscape, followed by a climb up the pyramid, offers time for your guide to take you back through history and explain how these people farmed, built their homes, practiced medicine and lived. A sunken patio was built and filled with water. By observing the stars at night in the pool's reflections they were able to to study astronomy. Climbing to the top of the pyramid was a reverential experience. Only 30% or so of the site has been excavated. The tour takes about 4 hours including the drive from San Miguel de Allende and is well worth it. The walk is about 1 1/2 hours, not recommended for anyone out of shape, or for young children.
