“We were treated with great respect”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2011

4 of us traveled aboard the El Chepe. We stayed in Creel and at El Mission. The staff on board the train were excellent, guiding us to the best spots at various stops. We met many other travelers both local and tourists aboard the train which made the trip even better. The view and scenery were wonderful, the Tamara Indians were kind and interesting. The side trips we took were breathtaking. I would recommend the El Chepe as a safe and interesting way to see some very remote parts of Mexico. Speak to the locals, interact with others. The trip can take interesting curves. We are going back in November to do the trip in reverse.

“Not worth time or money.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2011

We travelled from chihuahua to el fuerte on the 1st class train in February. The tickets were nearly £100 each. Food and drinks on the train are expensive and very average. Toilets are not what you expect for the ticket price. There is some good scenery if you stay over at one of the towns on the way but the train ride itself is nothing special. Much better train rides through pine forests in Europe than this. Despite numerous 30min stops on uninteresting bits of track the train only gives you 10 mins at the stop where the copper canyon actually is. Hardly enough time to walk down to the viewing platform and take photos and it would be easy to be left behind. The train was very delayed so last 3 hrs of scenery were in darkness. It is also extremely cold in winter so not the best time for trekking etc. We saw more attractive scenery in baja and forests if michoacan.

“A trip for kids!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2010

My dad took us on this train in 1968. I was 7 or 8 years old? hard to say. I don't remember being bored at all. Just an amazing adventure. THANKS DAD!

“Scenery, Fun, and a world from the past”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2009

The "Copper Canyon Tour" is a wonderful experience. I would recommend this to adults only and to those interested in the history of the area. I think children would be bored and would be more trouble than they are worth. For adults the scenery, history, and overall experience should not be missed. Keep in mind that you are travelling through an area of Mexico that isn't highly visited..i.e you will not find a McDonalds. Except accomodations to reflect this. Relax, go with the flow, and enjoy a "not your typical" adventure.

“the most scenic train ride you'll ever take”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2007

We took a whirlwind tour from Chihuahua. Alejandra at the Plaza Inn in Los Mochis set up the whole trip for us and it went flawlessly. Find her at bookings@plazainnhotel.com.mx.
The views are amazing. Traveler safety is very visable as the Federales are patroling the train at all times. At the stop in Diversadero we ate a local snack the Indians are cooking and shopped for the few minutes they give you. Soon after we got off to spend the night at Posada Barrancas on the rim. Highly recommended in spite of the hard beds. From PB to Las Furetes is some the most beautiful scenery you can imagine. We ate on the train for breakfast and lunch on two different days it was a fun experience. They serve beer, wine and drinks. We also bought a book in the club car that was very informative as your could figure out where you were by the mile markers. I am sorry we missed Los Furetes but we were pressed for time so we opted for Los Mochis and fishing in Topolobampo as the airport was close. We were there in the off season and there were still a lot of people on the train. I'm sure you will need to plan well in advance for the busy season. The seating is very comfortable and there is plenty of room to walk around. The bathrooms were a challenge and not always real clean. You might want to take travel wipes as they don't always have soap. The hotels were very quite and not busy at all. I was surprised to see so many older couples traveling as parts of this trip would be a bit hard to negotiate. (no one in wheelchairs as I think this could really be a challenge that is not accessable) They all seemed to be making it just fine though and having a good time to boot.
I would highly recommend this trip if you are ready for active adventures or R&R with a lot of peace and quite.
