This was our second stay at Villa di Piazzano in 6 years, this time accompanied by family members. We can't say enough about the wonderful experience both times, including the unbelieveable setting with amazing views of the countryside everywhere you turn, the buildings and grounds, the rooms - we stayed in the Passerini room both times and it is elegant, comfortable and spacious, and of course the owners and staff. The owners were most gracious and helpful hosts and the staff equally so. We received a great deal of helpful information both before and during our stay, from where to rent a car locally, to train travel to and from the area, sightseeing recommendations, arrangements for special outings, and of course restaurant referrals - always clear, accurate, and immensely valuable. There was a wedding group assembling for their big event that would occur a day or two after our departure and all parties enjoyed the excitement of the upcoming wedding without sacrificing service, privacy or all-around enjoyment of the villa. Weather permitted dining on the terrace for breakfast and dinner during our stay, and use of the pool - more perfection! Loved it and cannot wait to return.

Our 4-night stay at the Villa was perfect! The views are unbelievable, especially at sunset. We had 3 rooms (7 people) and they were all beautiful and large. Studio Passerini is definitely the best room in the hotel (although we never saw inside the adorable little free-standing cottage on the property). The owners are extremely gracious hosts and really went out of their way to make us feel welcome and relaxed. The rest of the staff was also very helpful and fun! (On a side note, I emailed them several times before we left the States and always received prompt and helpful answers so I'm not sure why the previous reviewer had such problems.)

Our stay here was just what we expected and we hope to return as soon as possible!

A recommendation and good rating on Trip Advisor leave us scratching our heads as to why folks like this Villa. An e-mail request for information before our visit went unanswered resulting in an inconvenience and annoyance right off the bat. We arrived for a three day stay to find a wedding party entirely taking over the Villa and the dining room. An overpriced ho hum room with a view off the back of the villa, a stuck bathroom door, and weak services resulted in the poorest value of our entire trip to Italy (when we had expectations this would be a highlight!) Thinly staffed overall and especially poor maid service (no turndown one night, didn't consistently restock used toiletries, dirty plates and wine glasses left behind) gave us the impression of an economy chain hotel not an owner housed villa.
Well intended staff redirected us the first evening (when the dining room was serving the wedding party) to a "local very good inexpensive restaurant." Scruffy at best, it didn't measure up to what someone staying here would expect and heck, there were several very good places they subsequently recommended. Inconsistency is the best description of Villa di Piazzano and we were sorry to have spent time and money there.

Management response from discerning_travel, Owner
(Management representative)
Jun 6, 2008

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am responding to your comments, though I would have much preferred had you approached me personally during your stay which I believe would have been more constructive and effective.

1. The night of your arrival there wasn’t a wedding. We only offer the exclusive use of the Villa for weddings. It was a group of guests celebrating a 25th anniversary and occupying 6 rooms and not the entire villa. They had 12 guests and conducted a 15 minute ceremony to renew their vows in one corner of the garden which is over 1 hectare in size. We have two dining rooms and had set the second dining room for other guests. If you were unable to dine with us on that evening, I am assuming that you simply had not reserved a table. The restaurant we recommended to you is a restaurant where you can enjoy a simple meal in an authentic Italian environment at good value for money and this is the description we provide (we have booklets in each room supplying a description of all the local restaurants). I will agree with you that it is more for Italians than for tourists but we often hosts guests who enjoy a detour from the usual tourist spots.

2. Turn-down is a daily service from 7 to 9 p.m.. The only instance this service is not provided is if a guest is in the room in which case the chamber maid is unable to provide the service. It is during turn-down that amenities are replaced and so I am assuming that if the chamber maid was unable to conduct turndown she was also unable to replace the soaps on a particular evening.

3. In regards to the thinly staffed service, we have 16 staff members and 18 guest rooms. We are anything but thinly staffed!

4. E-mail remains an unreliable form of communication and though I am not excluding human error in the lack of a reply to your e-mail, it may also be that your e-mail never reached us. I don’t know why you did not receive a reply but would not place so much faith in e-mail to the point that you start your holiday on a bad note.

I am very grieved by your negative comments and the fact that you were unable to find one positive point about the Villa. If you did not like the room, the view, the service and everything else that went with it, I can only conclude that this was not the place for you. I hope at least that we will not be attributed responsibility for the recommendation and the positive comments on Trip Advisor which are in clear contradiction to yours and beyond our control. Perhaps more attentive planning will preclude you from having such unfortunate encounters in future travel.

Kind regards,

Alessandra Wimpole

My wife and I traveled here for our honeymoon. We welcomed with a quick tour of the property and a bottle of Champagne in our room. Everyone at the hotel was accomodating and always pleasant. The room itself was large and spacious, the stay was so relaxing (We spent the previous four days in Rome). We found the hotel to be in a centralized location. We took day trips to MOntelcino and montepulciano, then another trip to the Chianti region. It was magnificent!!! Cannot wait to go back!

Our initial stay at this hotel in late Oct. 2007 was so fabulous that we booked to come back the following weekend. I might add that we sent many emails of inquiry to properties in Tuscany. The prompt and welcoming email reply from Villa di Piazzano set the tone for our two stays there. A member of the family who owns Villa di Piazzano emailed offering us upgraded rooms at good rates partly because it was near the end of the season. My husband is a value kind of guy so this was the first positive. Our family of five were very impressed with all aspects of our stay and that is a tall order as some of us work in the hospitality industry. We truly felt as if we were staying at a cardinal's hunting lodge which of course we were, only 600 hundred years later. Gorgeous grounds(even in late fall), the ambiance of the common rooms plus the rooms/suites were other positives. The word "rooms" does not do the large size, comfort level of the furnishings, or olive oil amenities justice. Our dinning experience was another positive. Not only the buffet breakfast but also the prix fixe, gourmet, four course, Italian dinners, were just the way we imagined dinning, Italian style, should be. One word of caution to those guests who stay for a week or more ---be preapred to gain weight because the food is very good!! The owners were charming hosts showing pride of ownership by checking personally on our rooms, chatting with us in the dinning room and offering assistance in booking other accomodation and sightseeing guidance. The most memorable moment for the five of us came at breakfast on the first morning. The owner, Adrianna along with her staff, carried a meringue cake with one lighted candle to our granddaughter who was celebrating her first birthday that day. We had not mentioned her first birthday to anyone but the staff had taken note of the date on our grandaughter's passport. How many one year olds get to celebrate their first birthday with a decadent meringue custard cake for breakfast at Villa di Piazzano? Thank you to the Wimpoles and staff for such a memorable stay.
