“Magoebaskloof welcome!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2013

4 of us on a Squash SA Coaching & M&R Roadshow stayed there on the long weekend in March. It was a very pleasurable experience.
Johannes (with his offer to wash the car) and Gertrude were excellent. She assisted us with anything we needed for our grandchild (that went with us).
Lydia was also very helpful with a mattress for Bastian.the 1year old.
We had 2 x great dinners there and the men especially loved the scrumptious breakfasts every morning.
We will return again at any time.

Dear Cecile,

It is a pleasure to receive feedback that singles out those special people that make our hotel and guests happy. Rest assured we will let Johannes, Gertrude and Lydia know that they have been singled out for making all the difference.

We are very proud of our breakfast and are working on making it the "place to eat breakfast" in Limpopo.

Warm regards,

The Magoebaskloof Team

Arrival = The welcome was fair and efficient but not as warm as expected.
Staff = Johannes, who helped us with our luggage, deserves a raise.
Rooms = Have great potential, are clean and neat but could do with a complete make-over.
Restaurant = As with the rooms, the restaurant would do well with a complete renovation and sprucing up.
Dinner = Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares would have a field day here as some of the food was simply reheated and served. E.g the creme brulee was cold and chunky.
Sleep = Very enjoyable.

The rooms, staff and restaurant was just fabulous!
Everyone went out of their way to make the weekend wonderful for us!!
We were provided with additional information not related to the resort which aided us in enjoying the surrounding area, the food at the restaurant was fabulous with the friendliest staff I have encountered in a very long time!

Room Tip: suites great for families!

The Magoebaskloof is a lovely 3 star resort, beautifully positioned overlooking a scenic valley. The rooms are as you would expect, the dining room good but it is the staff who add the warmth and professional service that make your weekend special.

Room Tip: The "Family Rooms" are spacious but there are old rooms which are tired.

1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2012

The Magoebaskloof hotel restaurant used to be renowned for their excellent food. It was our favourite restaurant for lunch on route between Gauteng and Tzaneen. We visited the restaurant on Sunday,29 April 2012. The deserted parking lot should have warned us that all was not well. To start off, the coffee shop could only offer us instant coffee. The filter coffee machine and espresso coffee machine were both out of order. The chicken, brie, tomato and basil baguette had no basil and the bread was old and stale. The smoked trout, cream cheese and spring onion baguette was also stale and had no spring onion. The mushrooms served with the scrambled egg breakfast were past their use by date.Upon complaining the chef brought basil pesto and sliced onion for the baguettes to the table. He apologized for the missing ingredients and blamed it on the lack of fresh produce from the village. The hotel is 28 km from Tzaneen, where there is a Foodlover's market, Woolworths foodmarket and a number of good supermarkets, all with excellent fresh produce.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for feedback regarding your experience in the restaurant. I would like to sincerely apologise for the shortcomings you received at our hotel and can guarentee you that our new Executive Chef is working very hard to ensure that the food standards remain at a very high standard that is expected from our guests and that these issues do not happen again.

Once again thank you for your feedback and my sincere apologies for the inconvenience this experience caused.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2010

I stayed here with my husband and my 85-year old mother -in-law from Johannesburg. While we had a few minor problems with defect light bulbs etc., my mother-in-law had to change her room because she had no hot water and the light in the bathroom couldn't get fixed. Rooms can look a bit tired depending on category with old carpets and stains on the bedspread. However, all problems were attended to fairly quickly.

The hotel seems to be a popular stop on the way to the Kruger National Park. The location is perfect and the view absolutely breathtaking. It has a pool and a cosy pub. We had a spacious and comfortable large room with a balcony. The bed was a bit on the small side for such a large room. We would have appreciated a king size instead of a queen size. The bathroom had a large tub and a separate shower and the toilet was also separate.

The free internet only worked near the bar and not in our room.

The real problems started in the dining room which was hopelessly understaffed and overbooked with people not finding any free tables. We had to wait forever to get served. I eventually got up and fetched a glass of water from the basin in the toilet since no waiter came to serve us any drinks. The chef is French from the culinary capital of France (Lyon), but the food was very mediocre South African fare. The steaks were excellent, but that's where it ends, so don't expect anything fancy like Crème Brulée or Floating Islands or Chocolate Mousse as dessert. Instead it is trifle, melk tart and fruit salad from canned fruit.

I would probably stay there again for the view and the large room, or I might look for one of the many "Bed & Breakfasts" in the area which might be better value for the money.
