“An experience not to be repeated-I hope”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2013

We had a reservation for room and dinner. When we got there the place was locked, no cars outside at 5pm. There is no other accommodation for miles and since cellphones don't work, no way to call either this place or an alternative. We decided to wait awhile. After maybe a half hour a truck pulled in with a delivery, and shortly after the owner turned up having seen the truck drive past her house. Good job the truck came- could possibly be the only reason the owner turned up at all.

Accepting that we had a reservation, she did not then or subsequently explain or apologise for her absence- or the fact that as she then indicated , the restaurant was closed. Again pointing ourt our reservation , she indicated that "things had been kinda slow". Her best offer was to return with a couple of slices of bread and a muffin each for breakfast, in lieu of that we'd expected to eat in her restaurant. Then the first room she gave us smelled of cigarette smoke and we had to move. So a kind of miserable night completely alone in a hotel that frankly has seen better days ( or so I'd hope) .

I really can't consider this a proper business. The owner seems to have no clue about her responsibilities, and the place is very basic . I wouldn't even think about staying here again and if you have any expectation of actually getting what your reservation supposedly included, then my advice would be to find something elsewhere- which won't be in or near Musgrave Harbour. However Musgrave Harbour isn't one of Newfoundland's showpieces, so maybe you won't be missing too much.

And finally we'd had to make contact with them several times before we had any response.

Perhaps the difficulty we had getting our booking made and confirmed in the first place (on one occasion it took a week for an e-mail to be replied to!) should have been a warning as to what we might have expected when we arrived.

I wish they had told us they weren't really open yet for the season when we enquired and that no one would be on site at the inn - instead we arrived to a large notice 'stuck' on the front window (the building was locked) giving mine and my mothers first names and surname and telling us to go to room 3 - a room which was unlocked and where the key had been left on the table. Anyone could have seen and read the sign and where we were the only car there it would have been obvious 2 ladies were staying there alone and the sign even kindly said in which room!

I realise having now visited that NL is probably very safe and unlike England where as women travelling you must always be safety conscious but it made us feel very vulnerable esp. as the telephone didn't work in the room - something we reported by to no avail - and being from abroad we had no mobile signal either.

Perhaps most alarmingly though all of a sudden about 10.30pm some people arrived without a car and were banging around in the room above us making lots of noise until almost 12midnight- it was VERY unnerving as we didn't know if they were supposed to be there or not and if they were just kids or who they were and with no working phone we couldn't ask anyone.
We barely slept and in the end got up at 5.30am and left by 6am.

I could not in all good conscious recommend this inn to anyone based on our experience I'm afraid for us it was truely a nightmare.

Room Tip: Make sure the inn is open and someone is in 'residence' when you stay - or you have a workin...

No frills lodging, but very clean and comfortable. Restaurant on premises very nice, both the food and service was very good. A little pricey for the level of services provided, however given the location, and not a lot of other choices in the immediate area, it was more than reasonable.
Would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Many room configurations / options available.

Cottage was clean and living area/dining kitchen was quite large. Bedrooms quite small with no room for luggage except on bed in second bedroom. Bathroom very nice with a stack washer/dryer. Closet too small for a medium piece of luggage. Nice cottage, however bedrooms need to be rearranged. Also, blinds in living/dining need to be replaced. . Spindrift Dining Room has a really nice decor, relaxing and a variety of entrees. Owner had just baked bread one evening and she gave us several slices each even though she said she had made it for her grandson. It was Soooo yummy! Owner extremely friendly and nice.

Room Tip: Good midpoint for driving to Twillingate.

The Spindrift was a very pleasant experience. The rooms were clean and fresh, and offered wonderful views of the bay. Rooms also had kitchen facilities (but no microwave). For $100 for two including tax, it was a steal (or so I have learned from this recent trip).

We had dinner and breakfast in the full service restaurant. The meal was delicious, although there was a bit of a wait at dinner. A group of 15 had arrived shortly before us, and as all meals are prepared when they are ordered, the service was a little slow. Still the view from the dining room made the wait worth it. The next morning, service was very efficient. There is a very good variety of items on the menu from seafood to beef to turkey.

All of the employees were warm and welcoming and made our stay a very pleasant experience.
