“Beautiful, relaxing, pacific”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2010

Overall, a very good experience and we would definitely recommend this place to others. The location is fabulous, the hostesses friendly, and the setting tranquil. The ONLY complaint we had is our cabana constantly smelled like urine - not sure if it was the cabana itself (Christopher Columbus was the one we stayed in) or the plumbing mechanism the posada employed. Otherwise, a magical experience. The restaurant (Jacob) was fantastic as well!!!

We just returned from a one week stay at La Luna and do not have enough great things to say about it. The property is absolutely stunning. Great care is taken to tend to the plush vegetation surrounding the cabanas and the seaweed is removed from the beach every morning, leaving a pristine beach full of the finest sand you will ever walk on. The cabanas themselves are full of charm. We stayed in Casa Blanca and fell asleep every night to the waves crashing one hundred feet away. There is no air conditioning, but the fan over the bed cools it off nicely. There also seemed to be a constant breeze coming off the water (enough so that I wore a light sweater at night). We enjoyed the open shower and the jug of purified drinking water in our room. You may find a bug or two, or maybe the occasional lizard, in your cabana but this is only to be expected in the tropics and did not deter one bit from our stay. The porch, with its hammock and wooden table and chairs, is perfect for a late-afternoon cerveza and card game. The staff is extremely friendly and helped us arrange a morning excursion to the ruins at Coba and an underground cenote (highly recommend doing this, but go early to miss the crowds at both locations--we literally had the cenote to ourselves by leaving from Tulum at 8am). Jacob, who oversees the property and runs the restaurant, is an extremely talented chef. We were amazed at his creations and ate at the restaurant on the property three out of our seven nights there. They were the best dinners we had all vacation--even better than some highly regarded and more well-known restaurants in Tulum. (If you want to get off the beaten path and go where the locals go, try El Perico for $1 tacos or El Camello for some of the best seafood around. Both places are in town and are located at opposite ends of the strip. We went to both places for lunch and would go back in a heartbeat).

We left yesterday and are already planning our next visit. Cabanas la Luna is truly a gem and we cannot thank the staff enough for making our vacation one that we will never forget!

We have spent a month in Tulum, therefore we have planned well in advance. We have chosen this hotel based on the reviews and pictures found on internet. We are experienced travellers for longer terms. We have expected to find something similar, but never expected that it will meet our expectations in every way. The people working in Cabanas La Luna are extremely friendly and helpful. They are allways ready to extend the boundaries of service by preparing you a meal that is not exactly on the menu, or give you a useful advise on getting around in town. We have stayed in Captain Dale, which is right on a perfect beach. Therefore it was really sad to come home and listen to cars in the morning instead of the wind and sea. The buildings are all unique in every way and definitely built to highest quality Cabana. The place is full of romance thanks to Jacob. He is by the way a master chef (even by French standards). The beach is a smooth white-sand type and almost deserted, when comparing to similar resorts in the world. The sea is excellent for childrens and adults as well. Our son is 9 and our
daughter is 7 yrs old. It was totally safe for them and extreme fun for all of us using the boogie boards available in the hotel. Indeed Captain Dale is constantly windy, which we have preferred to the much more sheltered inner areas of the complex, where you would find more mosquitos in exchange, and also miss the ocean view.

Part of us will never leave... it was so hard to come back to 'reality'. Jacob and the crew were great hosts from the gracious and generous service, to the useful tips on local travel. We tried a host of other restaurants but the food at La Luna's new restaurant far exceeded all others. By the end of our trip we stopped trying the 'others' and stuck with the best. Breakfast on the porch in the morning, lunch on the beach and a four course dinner in the wonderful new space were all fresh, tasty and reasonable in price. We stayed in Marrakesh, so lovely - the pictures speak for themselves. It's a private space, with one of the bedrooms overlooking the sea, very idyllic. It can be windy at times up there on the second floor, but it also keeps the bugs away. A few steps to the beach and you're on soft white sand to soak up the sun, or sit under an umbrella during the day. When was the last time you saw the milky way? Most nights in Tulum, the view of the stars are breathtaking - bring a constellation map if you like stargazing. They take credit cards now so checking out is easier than some have posted in the past.

My husband and I just got home from a wonderful four night stay at La Luna. We had spent the previous 5 nights at a B&B on the jungle side of Akumal. First impressions were great. The new restaurant reception area is gorgeous. We were promptly greeted and taken to our room. O.M.Goodness. I am not trying to be sappy, but the view from our room (Christoper Columbus) brought tears to my eyes. You spend so much time anticipating your vacation. You know the water will be all sorts of blue, the coconut trees will sway, the sand will be soft...but NOTHING could have prepared me for how breathtakingly beautiful the property and stretch of beach in front of Cabanas La Luna actually was.

The room was quirky beautiful. Don't come here expecting luxury in your room...that isn't the draw. Our room was tight, but not uncomfortable. Air flow was great on the nights we wanted it, otherwise it was easy to shut the breeze out. Each cabana is decorated in a very unique style. You've just got to see it to understand! There is a nice water dispenser in each room, so you don't have to worry about drinking water. There are also safes in the rooms. I felt very safe on the property, at all times.

The staff was very pleasant. Not overly attentive, but that would have annoyed me. They were always available, so if I needed something they were right on it. I especially enjoyed Ruben. He was very friendly and helpful.

The restaurant is stunning. My understanding is that Jacob and Rodrigo take turns cooking each night. We only had the opportunity to eat at La Luna one night, but it was the best meal we had, by far, the entire trip. They post the evenings menu on a board outside the restaurant. If it isn't there, you can always ask one of the guys what is on the menu. You won't regret the meal, trust me! The only issue is the restaurant hasn't been granted its liquor license yet. You can bring your own beverages though, they will even chill and serve your wine. As far as breakfast and lunch go, we had breakfast one morning and it was good. I had a smoothie and it was great. Of course, they serve you coffee, fresh oj and toast each morning on your patio. They will walk around and see who is up and then bring it out. Sooo, if you are ready for your caffeine, just hang out on your patio for awhile! ;-)

Like I mentioned earlier, the property is beautiful. The stretch of beach in the vicinity of La Luna is one of the nicest in the area. I didn't want to swim or sun anywhere but in front of my own "home." I probably wouldn't have even left the property if it weren't for my need to find mango margaritas! Even at full capacity, there were always beach beds and chairs available. No issues finding space here.

I have no complaints about our visit, but there is one thing that I feel it is only fair to mention. The property has pets. There is one cat and two new puppies. They are super clean and VERY sweet. I loved them and I'm not really a pet person. They are really present though, so you should at least be prepared for their presence and realize you can just "shoo" them away and all will be right with the world. And if you love animals, well, you will have some of the cutest little playmates you could ever ask for.

Book your stay in paradise...it is fantastic.

5 nights - Thank you for such a nice review. We are glad you enjoyed your stay. We are happy to announce that we just received our liquor license and are now operating our fully functional restaurant-bar. It wasn't received in time for you stay, but we are happy you had such a glorious time and we hope to welcome you back soon!

My wife and I stayed in the Jungle suite in early February 2010. We had a wonderfully relaxing vacation. Cabanas la luna is situated on the most spectacular portion of beach for a long ways. We were the first guests to stay in the new Jungle suite and found it to be beautiful. We realy enjoyed the privacy and beauty of this suite. It is very large and could easily accommodate 2 couples or a family. The restaurant was nearing completion during our stay, they were not able to use all the new equipment yet but the food they prepared was great. Cabanas la luna is only a short walk to El Tabano (our favorite restaurant at Tulum) and I would highly recommend it to all. The best part of staying at a place like Cabanas la luna is the people you meet. They are the type of people you can instantly become friends with. We had a terrific vacation and would definatly recomend Cabanas la luna.

Cabanas La Luna was exactly what I was looking for, a relaxing vacation, low key, visually pleasing and an uncrowded beach. We were the first guests to stay in the garden suite, see the photo's I posted. The meals were good to great, although a little pricey. The staff, Jacob, Ruben, Gonzales, Jose and the rest of the support staff were great; attentive and responsive.

The only thing that could have been better was warmer weather, it was a little cool, 70's during the day and downright chilly in the evening but hey, next time I'll plan my trip a couple of weeks later..oh, coffee a little earlier then 8AM would be nice.
