“Stylish cabana accommodation with a smile”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2010

We stayed 5 nights at Posada Lamar during our honeymoon to Mexico in the Lapiz Bungalow. The position of the hotel was great, on a beautiful stretch of beach, far from the rocks and seaweed that are found along the first 1-3km stretch of the road leading to the hotel. Our Bungalow (Lapiz) was situated behind Zafiro (beachfront) with great sea views from our good sized patio. We chose Lapiz as we were worried that Zafiro would be to exposed to the elements- wind, sun etc... but after getting a sneak peak into the Zafiro bungalow on our last day during cleaning we decided that if we were to ever come back ti Tulum we would ask for the Zafiro bungalow. Our bungalow was great however- one of the most private due to its height (Ruby and Marfil are pretty much at ground level) where as Zafiro and Lapiz are suspended on stilts. Even though the garden bungalows seemed delightful and much more private, I would recommend a beach view/front bungalow as on a few occasions we found some little critters in Lapiz so I can imagine there would be many more insects present in the garden bungalows. The staff were very friendly and available to answer questions we had throughout our stay. Our breakfast was served daily on the patio. Even though hot dishes such as scrambled eggs were available at an extra cost we found that the included breakfast of yogurt, fruit, granola, juice etc... was more than sufficient to get a good start to the day. Taxi rides to Tulum Pueblo cost approx. 50 MXP (the equivalent of about 2-3 euros which we found reasonable. We reccommend the El Tabano Restaurant 5 mins walk down the road for anyone willing to experience a good night out. Posada Margherita is also great if you are after an Italian meal- but a bit in the pricey side.

I traveled to Tulum with my parter and our 12 year old son for a week and the experience was everything we were looking for. We wanted to enjoy the beach in a small, tranquil town where we could relax and appreciate the simple things around us. We new beforehand we were not staying at a resort type place, so the basic necessities offered was not a problem for us.
We rented a care from Easyway, located 5 minutes off the terminals. Once we arrived to Cancun, Easyway's staff was waiting for us and took us directly to the offices to process the paperwork. Everything took about 15 minutes. Jose Maria, the manager, was very nice and helpful. We decided to choose Easyway because they were the ones with the most positive reviews and I also liked the fact that they do not require a hold of $600+ to rent a car. The roads were excellent all the way through Tulum. No problems what so ever with roads or police trying to earn a quota.
Once we arrived in Tulum, we stopped at the San Francisco super market for some things to snack on, got money from the bank ATM located next to the market and we went on our way to Posada Lamar. We arrived at 8pm and the staff was very welcoming. Andrea was at the reception desk and showed us to our bungalow Zafiro, which by far is the best one there, in my opinion. It offers the best view of the beach (20 steps from the water) and it has the most privacy when compared to the others. It has a king size bed which was comfortable and it also has a futon to accomodate a 3rd person, in our case our son. Everything was very clean and decorated nicely. Fresh water and clean towels were brought daily and the bungalow was also cleaned daily. The breakfast they offer was delicious and sufficient until lunch time. They also have a menu that offers other dishes they can make for you if you choose. It's solar lighting so lights go on shortly after sundown and they cut them off at midnight, unless you request more time. We were in bed by 11pm so that didn't bother us. If you need to charge your cell, camera, etc. you can take it to the front desk were they will charge it for you. You can also access the internet free of charge in the reception area where they have a lounge area to acommodate guests. The beach water was beautiful and clean. It rained almost everyday we were there but it usually began after dark, so no biggy.
We had a chance to try the food at 'El Tabano' which I reccommend. The atmosphere is perfect for an evening dinner at candlelight. The staff was helpful in explaining the dishes. We had Pollo Rojo, Camarones en Mantequilla Habanera, and Pierna de Carnero en Achiote...all delicious and large servings. On one afternoon we had lunch in the pueblo at 'Urge Taquito' which offers fish tacos with buffet style toppings...those were also very good.
On our third day in Tulum, we drove to Chichen Itza to check out the ruins. Awsome experience! On our way back we stopped in the center of Villadolid for a bite to eat. We had dinner at Hotel Maria de la Luz which has it's restaurant right across the street from the village plazita. Their food was phenomenal! We couldn't decide what to order so we ended up ordering 4 or 5 different dishes and shared them all. I think we ordered Carne Vieja, Salchichon, humm I can't recall the others,..sorry! I forgot to write down the names right away and have since forgotten them. On day 4, we checked out the Tulum ruins. We went a couple hours prior to closing time and when it came time to close, the personnel weren't very nice about kicking us out. I would definitely recommend Tulum as a perfect getaway, but also Posada Lamar. I know there are other nice places to stay at, but I can't wait to return to Posada Lamar! I hope this helps future visitors because I know I sure read a lot of reviews before heading out.

I spent hours reading through reviews on Tulum beach accomodations. I got a really good feeling about Posada Lamar which lead to my booking. My instinct was right, this place is fabulous.

If you've done your research, you know that most bungalows at Tulum Beach are rustic, without modern conveniences like in-room electricity and 24 hour lighting. Posada Lamar is one of these bungalows. We were a little nervous about this type of holiday, but found those conveniences were not needed. At Posada Lamar, you can fall asleep to the sound of the waves, wake up and take a few steps on a sandy path to get to the beach and have your breakfast delivered to you. It is simple and it is wonderful. We didn't need anything else.

We spent our 5 nights at Posada Lamar as total beach bums. The waves are amazing and there are boogie boards onsite. You can lie in the sun or shaded areas all day long without interruption. There are lots of bars and restaurants along the beach when you get hungry or thirsty. A wonderful Italian restaurant, Posada Margarita, is just 2 doors down. The beach is friendly, casual and unpretentious. We were completely at ease. The hosts are helpful if you need them, otherwise they let you be.

If you want to adventure out more, the town of Tulum has shops and restaurants just a quick taxi ride away. The Tulum ruins and several cenotes are close by too. We couldn't peel ourselves off the beach long enough to check these out.

Some reviews mention eroded beaches, poor water pressure etc. We did not experience any of these issues. The photos posted online are mostly a good representation of what you'll see. We didn't have problems with bugs, mosquitos or other creatures in this type of accommodation. The lights come on around dusk, so you will want to bring a flashlight. The rooms get dark when the sun starts to set. You will be provided with candles.

The staff was friendly and helpful. You can choose when you would like breakfast served and whether you would like it on the beach or at your room/porch. We were offered the use of a fridge, so when we asked to put some drinks in it we were given a cooler with ice to take to our room. It was perfect.

There are only 7 bungalows on this property which makes it a quiet place. We stayed in Esmeralda, the cheapest one, and loved it. When we are able to return, we definitely will.

great location, vibe, look, feel. cute bungalows right on the beach. friendly, helpful staff. a bit on the expensive side when you consider the lack of electrical outlets in the rooms, shower water pressure, electricity before 5 pm and after midnight, and the included breakfast that consists only of fruit, tea, and a small portion of yogurt and muesli. but in terms of beauty, romance, pure air, fresh breezes, and proximity to everything cool in tulum, this place is totally awesome. i'd go back for sure.

Posada Lamar is a lovely, romantic place to stay right on Tulum beach. The cabins are lovely and staff really helpful and friendly. Posada Lamar doesn't have it's own bar or restaurant but there plenty within walking distance down the beach. Next door is Posada Margherita which does fabulous italian food. Posadar Lamar is a great place to stay but be mindful that this type of hotel isn't for everyone - you are staying on a remote beach - if you like aircon, tv and can't stand insects Tulum beach may not be the place for you.

Nice location, the ladies at the front desk are sweet. Breakfast is served each morning between 8-10am, delivered to your doorstep. huts are clean and tidy, eco-friendly. free bottled water every day, two doors down from Posada Margherita, who makes great espresso drinks.

I recommend any of the bungalows, even if it's facing the garden. i didn't love the Ambar room, which is located closest to the parking lot, but it was still decorated nicely.

Posada Lamar was gorgeous - we stayed for a week in Bungalow Lapiz. It was considered a "beach view" bungalow and was worth every penny. Of the two "beach front" bungalows "Zafiro" was probably the best - had the most private balcony literally over the beach. "Rubi" was ok, but that bungalow was positioned a little lower & was definitely not as private. The other bungalows all lined the walkway to the beach - I would be a little self-conscious in there because people would be able to look in pretty easily!!

Breakfast each morning was brought to our bungalow - and consisted of fresh fruit, yogurt & granola, tea/coffee & freshly baked bread. Was a fantastic way to start the day. The staff was nice & helpful - always willing to provide more towels & water when we asked.

The beach was beautiful - but I wouldn't highly recommend it for anyone interested in actually spending a lot of time in the water (true for this whole stretch of beach - not just in front of Posada Lamar). The waves were pretty choppy - and there's a lot of sea weed (and, sadly, garbage) that is floating out there. They do a pretty good job cleaning up the beach each morning, though.

Two disappointments were that the hot water was a bit unreliable - by the end of the week the hot water only lasted about 30 seconds - if it came on at all. This might have been due to more people having checked in - but it was a little frustrating. However, it was so hot that their luke-warm cold water was usually sufficient for a quick shower. We were also never able to find their promised wireless network - which was probably a blessing in disguise (we were there to relax!) - but was still a little annoying.

I would recommend this hotel to adults - kids would probably get a bit bored. It was actually nice staying someplace without a restaurant - it forced us to eat at a variety of other restaurants (both in the pueblo & on the beach). Advice - if you're going during buggier season definitely bring spray (there are few screens on the windows - so bugs could definitely come in if they wanted to) - and bring a flashlight! It gets DARK at night!!!!
