Amazing *New* ownership. So I read all the reviews of Mil Amores and I recently stayed there for about 2 weeks (actually got married on the beach there). I will put photos and more in shortly, but I felt compelled to post a note quickly. Mil Amores used to be called Casa Magna. It was initially built by the famous drug kingpin Pablo Escobar. When he was assassinated, the Mexican government took over the property, where it fell into disrepair. A few hurricanes helped that process as well. An American (I think) woman, Melissa (cited by name, usually negatively, in some of the reviews below) took over the property and began restoring it. Many of the (negative) reviews below are from this period. I believe Melissa owns Amansala and a few other hotels further up the beach - FYI. Around Christmas 2008 the Mexican government sold the property (not sure the politics with Melissa) to a family from Guadalajara. They removed Melissa and put in a very sweet Mexican couple, Pamela and Alberto, and renamed it from Casa Magna to Mil Amores. Mil Amores is a beautiful property - two mansions (suitable for a cocaine kingpin) that sleep on the order of 100 people, right on the most beautiful section of beach that is very private. The rooms have consistent power, hot water and clean linens. They are very quiet with amazingly beautiful views.
But it is really the people (Pamela, Alberto and their staff) that make Mil Amores amazing. They hired an unbelievable chef and although I toured all the restaurants along Tulum (Om, Le Zebra, Zamas, Hechizo, many other excellent culinary explorations) Mil Amores's chef is my standing favorite (Although Stephan at Hechizo is also amazing). Not to mention that the menu at Mil Amores was usually "What would you like tonight?". On our final night, things were slow and yet they opened the kitchen and made a complete 10 (ten) course dinner for just the two of us. We felt guilty but the chef was only too happy to have us and made an absolutely amazing meal - 4 different appetizers, 3 fish main courses, and 3 desserts. Each was small and beautifully prepared, we were totally amazed.
One afternoon I casually remarked I didn't like walking from the beach chair up to the hotel ( 50 feet) for a drink, referring more to my lack of athleticism and general lazyness on my holiday than anything about the hotel. The next day there was a full bar on the sand no more than 10 feet from my chair, with a waiter whose only job I swear was to determine if there was anything on the planet I might desire. Again, Pamela and Alberto makes the difference.
Numerous other touches just made it an amazing experience. One evening after leaving our room and we walked through the reception, I asked what the wonderful smell was (a unique Mayan incense). I noticed Pamela dashed out and about an hour later when we returned to our room, we found it filled with candles and our favorite incense. You simply cannot put a rating on service like that. One evening our large party of friends were commenting on all the great service they had at other places, the conversation turned to Mil Amores, where we laughed, as they were simply in a category all their own "Ridiculously Nice".
I highly recommend Mil Amores. The property is beautiful but the staff is amazing. I'd be happy to speak to anyone interested in more directly. I'll post some links to many photos shortly. You can check out a few here:

All the indoor ones are Mil Amores and the outdoor ones are the beach right near the hotel. The Cenotes are right down the road and the parade pictures are from the Carnival parade in Cozumel.
Thanks for a fabulous 2 weeks! Todd
