“Incredible Gracious Staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2010

I was scheduled to stay at Cabanas Tulum the first week of May. I arrived and was greeted by a gracious and enthusiastic front desk and was ready for my stay. As a solo traveler, and one with a bit of a phobia for enclosed spaces, I had (most unfortunately for me) discovered that the room did not have enough windows, and quickly realized that I had made a personal mistake. There are doors that open right on to the beach, and I knew how much people loved and adored this property and was so disappointed by my personal reaction. Words (really and truly) cannot express the level of professionalism, warmth and kindness I received from the property manager Jesus in response to my upset. I was mortified by my negative reaction to the space and he, immediately identifying the emotional distress I was under, related to me as a human being. He not only arranged for the refund of my rate (a massive exemption to policy under the circumstances, for which I am so grateful), but he ensured that 1) I had a place to stay for the evening, and 2) personally escorted me to the property down the road! This experience has been imprinted on my memory of what turned out to be an extraordinary getaway to paradise. I returned the following night to Cabanas Tulum to have dinner at El Bistro and to extend my profuse apologies and appreciation to Jesus for the way my conflict was handled the evening prior. I was welcomed just as warmly the second time, and had an incredibly delicious meal on a unique and beautiful beach setting (I highly recommend!). Cabanas Tulum are in the process of building additional beachfront suites (incorporating huge windows to suit my phobia) ... Jesus - warm greetings and THANK YOU again from a rainy dreary NYC. I look forward to returning and properly experiencing this special property in Tulum. Keep an eye on this place!

We stayed at cabanas tulum for 4 nights of our honeymoon and absolutely loved it!

We had some terrible weather but the hotel itself is great! We had some great help from pati at reception and the bar/restaurant staff were professional and extremely friendly.

Rooms were basic compared with what we stayed in elsewhere for the price but they were always clean and waking up to the most gorgeous stretch of beach every morning made us not want to be in our rooms anyway!!!

Food at the restaurant was divine and we ate there every meal. I would recommend however taking some snacks/water with you as there are not any convenience stores within walking distance of the beachside area. The bar did have 2 x 1 beer and cocktails every day we were there though!

Management are currently renovating this hotel and we think it will be an even better place to stay in months to come!

Wow, what an unexpected and pleasant surprise our visit was. - We stayed two nights here after stays at a couple of larger and more upscale places in Tulum and enjoyed ourselves here as much, if not more. To begin with, the staff is tremendous. - Pati, Martin, Julio and Jorge are just a few of the names of the people who could not have been more helpful, friendly and gracious from the moment we arrived to when we checked out. The rooms are simple and understated, but clean and the location on the postcard setting beach could not be more perfect. The food at the restaurant was pleasantly surprising and again, the service was terrific. It was a an amazing value and we will be back the next time we make our way through Tulum.

We loved our time in Tulum and we were so happy with our choice of Cabañas Tulum. We decided to go to Tulum last minute (after an awesome trip last year to Akumal) and thanks to TripAdvisor went with Cabañas Tulum. This place is warm in spirit, feels like a family establishment, has a high standard of service, has water and electricity all hours, and best of all is right on the pristine pure white beach. We liked the vibe and it felt very quiet. The beach there is just heaven. Pati at the front desk was super friendly and helpful and we enjoyed talking with her immensely. We paid $20 extra per night for the Beachfront King room and we were very glad for the proximity and view to the water. The breeze off the ocean keeps you cool and mosquito-free at all times. We slept very soundly (firm mattress) with the constant tide. Each room has a little safe, so we felt good about the security. And there is a nice hammock right on your stoop! The front lobby has free WiFi if you bring your laptop or smartphone. The breakfast is included and very nice, better than expected, you can get whatever you want. Also at this beach there are 2 for 1 drinks all afternoon. The restaurant is very good overall, although like all restaurants located right on the beach you pay a premium (same as US prices). That was the only downside to the whole trip. We had dinner there a couple times. But, we had a lot of fun going into Tulum town and exploring local eating spots there. That is why you need a car!
There are many helpful maps of Tulum online and although we wish we had seen them before going, the location of Cabañas Tulum was perfect, about halfway down the beachfront hotel zone. A lot of people recommend staying in town, but town is farther away than they made it seem and we were SO glad we were right on the beach. Try: http://www.todotulum.com/tulum-mexico-maps.php?map=1
Tulum area rocks. It is the quiet, picturesque, gorgeous, restorative beach we were hoping for. There are tons of excursions and options for the area. We will have to come back to do things we didn't fit into our ten day trip!
Overall Recommendations:
1. Rent a car! It is not that expensive and then you can freely roam over the whole area (we liked Ace car company because it was cheap and they didn't hassle us). Just get the small cheap one and you'll be fine!
2. If you like yoga or even want to try it out once, we highly recommend Yoga Shala. It is newly renovated and just a 5 minute walk south from Cabañas Tulum. Gary is the owner and is very hospitable and the palapa yoga studio is heavenly. Our favorite teacher was Tomer (Hatha class, anusara-inspired). Yoga is $10 per class or $35 a week and it was very high quality!
3. Bring snorkel stuff and then you can go places hassle-free.
4. Visit at least one Cenote (under ground caverns, exquisite and ethereal). We liked Dos Ojos and Gran cenote. 100 pesos admission for each, more if you want to do a guided tour.
5. Snorkel with sea turtles in Akumal bay (free, just park in the public beach area). Or drive further north to Akumal's Laguna Yal-ku. It has calm water and tons of fish, almost like a snorkeling zoo. So nice. 100 pesos admission.
6. Sian Kan nature preserve--gorgeous and definitely worth it. Stop at Cesiak just inside of the main gate and you can arrange one of their tours with knowledgeable and conservation-minded guides. We went on a kayak trip with an ornithologist named Jorge and it was fabulous and educational. We learned our herons.
7. Food in Tulum town: Urge Taquito (north edge of main avenue) for delicious fish tacos with lots of salsas (daytime hours). El Asadero (on the cross street where Scotia bank is, but west) for incredible grilled steak and a neighborhood feel. El Nave (about halfway down the main avenue) for great pizza and nice ambiance. Buy beers and water in town and bring them back! But, you can't buy beer on Sundays after noon and on all other nights after 9 pm. We were foiled twice!
8. If you like to run, the Tulum beach is very flat and hard at the water's edge and just perfect for running!
9. You can get cash very easily from HSBC or Scotiabank or others in town.
We will definitely go back, and we hear there are amenities such as a pool and spa on their way. So....have fun! Enjoy Tulum!

Loved our stay at Cabanas Tulum. We went with our kids ages 11,8,5,4 and stayed for a week. Nice to wake up every morning to the ocean. Beach was nice, not crowded, kids enjoyed playing in sand all day. There are hammocks all over to take siestas in. There is also alot of restaurants nearby within walking distance. Staff was friendly, restaurant food was delicious especially the dinner menu. Clean rooms.
Only a short drive to a grocery store and downtown Tulum.
We didnt miss our Tv's, video games, or internet at all.
Great price, great stay we will definately be back again.

We found Cabanas Tulum accidentally, having booked at another hotel on the Tulum strip with sewage problems. This is a jewel of a place, where our room was right on the beach and overlooked crystal aqua water. We traveled with a 9 year old and a 13 year old and it was hard to get them out of the hotel to see Chichen Itza and other local attractions. The staff at this place could not have been more friendly, from the desk staff who were multi-lingual and helped us with everything, to the waiters who offered to go to the store and buy our favorite beer, so that we would be well-stocked. The restaurant service is slow, but the food is good and everyone is smiling so much you hardly care. No TV's, which was great for us, but a clean, gorgeous room where the waves rock you to sleep at night. If I had the vacation time, I would be back there today....
