“No Frills - Great Beach”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2009

We went here knowing exactly what to expect based on previous TripAdvisor reviews. You get a no frills cinderblock room on an AMAZING beach. if luxury is your thing stay away.
I was worried about cockroaches and ants but had no problem with neither. We paid the extra 10 bucks for the beachfront room and it was totally worth it. Waking up and stepping outside in your pj's to the turqoise ocean, palm trees and white sand is definitely something i can't do at home!
staff were friendly enough but not super welcoming. they didn't know much about booking tours so we went to the travel agency in town.

Tulum is growing very fast and things really shouldn't be as expensive as they are here. i mean we paid $90 bucks for a high season room and we had a trickle of a saltwater shower. it seems like they are raking in the dough without putting much back into the joint. which is too bad considering they have a great spot on the beach. And i guess they can get away with it too since all the hotels around are charging even more of an arm and a leg.

We ate one meal at the restaurant and at the hotel restaurant next door and decided to give up on the beach hotel dining and just go into town. after paying 90 pesos at ana y jose for a wimpy fruit plate and then seeing the following day that entire pineapples cost 10 pesos at the grocery store we realized that most everyone here is trying to capitalize on ripping off tourists. i dont blame them if people will buy things without thinking twice, but come on!

I was a big fan of this place, because of the value and simplicity. It is hard for me to rate CT now. We really liked the place. Everything was what we expected for our second visit....except for the cockroaches. They were even in our bed. Put a damper on our sleeping at night, as did the Italian party that went on until 430 am. They were loud and didn't give a blank that there were people sleeping in their immediate area. No one from CT seemed to care about either issue. A real shame, as this place was an inexpensive place on a great beach.

Ok...its not the most comfortable stay but your going in for the value and the view. Im used to the ac and soft bed and refreshing shower but i can rough it out. You have an electric fan that works only certain hours of the day. I think 7-10 at night and morning. That goes for all the hotels in this area tho. So at night the windows are open and for our two night stay I even dared to sleep outside. It was windy and the sound of crashing waves was peaceful. Fortunately during the time we came we didnt encounter too many mosquitoes , which wasnt the same for our colleagues that came 2 weeks before. The bed is not the softest ( takes some getting use to) but comfortable enough. The shower is salty....yes it taste like beach water. BUT THE VIEW, is worth it. All you had to do is step outside your door and you can forget your complains. $70 for a beach front property---VERY AFFORDABLE>>... oh and they try to clean the room....They fix the bed and gives towels in the morning and the floor is not at all sandy, which is great...Location wise....you need to get a taxi to get out of their hotel zone(to highway 307) or go to their downtown.average of $6. Stop at the intersection of highway 307 and you can catch a collectivo going anywhere for 2 dollars. THe taxi runs outside the hotel at all times during the day.

We were looking for a small town feel. Our goal was to get away from the glitz and glamour of Cancun (Las Vegas x 10), and to stay in a local town that didn't have a fully developed tourist feel.

We found that in Tulum and especially loved Cabanas Tulum because its secluded and everyone staying here was super friendly. The hotel staff was fantastic. They showed us around town and around the beach they introduced us to seeing the wonder of a Sea Turtle laying eggs in front of the small row of hotels.

We had a great time. The food at the restaurant was the only food that didn't make me sick. It was good home-cooked, nothing fnacy.

The Cabana was just a room, not sparkling clean like most nicer hotels, or even average hotels in the US. I slept in a hammock on the porch each night b/c I was afraid of the roaches and ants in the room. The hammock was perfect to sleep on.

The beach in front of the hotel is better than any other stretch of beach in that area.

We loved it here.

Please note: If you are looking for a more developed place with lots of nice restaurants, clubs, hotels then Tulum is not worth more than a day trip.

If you enjoy the small town pueblo feel with minimal amenities for tourists and don't mind not having a million clubs to go to at night and billions more places to shop during the day then this is the place for you. Nature lovers paradise.

Personally, i loved it!

The owner Carlos and his nephew helped us when we had problems with our original hotel and then with our car rental company. They were understanding and trusting, I'm so happy that we were here when we had these problems.
Me and my 15 year old son spent 4 days here 7/08 we were content. The wind kept us cool when the fans went off at midnight, except for the one night when when it stopped blowing.
The beach was free of rocks and raked of seaweed every morning. The water was beautiful and warm. The chairs were uncomfortable but my son wouldn't let me sit long anyway. We were hoping to snorkel out to the reef that I've heard runs along the beaches of Tulum but the water was not as calm as I had expected. I'm a good swimmer, but not that good.
Our room was cleaned nicely every day, one bed was harder than the other and so was one set of pillows but we slept fine.
The last night the wind stopped we slept with the door open, do not do this. The wind not only keeps you cool, it keeps all the mosquitos away. They love us and we woke with many bites. I plan on returning here, I like that no one bothered us but they were there when we needed them.

We decided to stay here because we wanted to be on the beach but were traveling on a budget with young children so also wanted to avoid thatched cabanas or expensive hotels. The beach location is Cabanas Tulum’s main selling point. It’s just beautiful. The rooms were spacious and adequate, nothing special but fine. You get what you pay for and we didn’t come to this place expecting luxury. We saved money by requesting a room set back from the beach (though still just steps away). Don’t clean your teeth in the water – it is salty and that can’t be good. We had a cooler that we filled up regularly at the supermarket in town (much cheaper than buying anything on the beach) and made daily picnics which was perfect for us. The hotel staff are pretty unresponsive and the whole place could really do with a refurb but if you just want a reasonable place to lay your head on this incredible stretch of beach, Cabanas Tulum is a good place to stay. We highly recommend going to Hidden Worlds Cenote Park which is about 15 minutes drive north of Tulum on the highway (see our review). We had a wonderful day there. One evening we splashed out on a meal in neighboring Ana Y Jose and we don’t recommend this - although the food tasted good at the time, we all ended up with bathroom issues the following day. There are cheaper and better options to eat out if you head into town. In town there are also plenty of cheap internet cafes and some great fruit and vegetable stores. It was a memorable vacation and we’d recommend Cabanas Tulum to anyone who’s looking for a basic and reasonably priced room on this beautiful beach.

I spent two nights at the Cabanas Tulum in an oceanfront “bungalow” that suited my needs very nicely. The accommodations are, as others have noted, quite basic, but it was clean and the bed was comfortable and there was plenty of hot water during the hours when electricity was on. The curtains might show some signs of wear and tear, but I can assure you that I was not there to look at curtains. And the view is magnificent! It was wonderful to sit or walk on the beach, relax on my patio, and fall asleep and wake up to the glorious sounds and images of the Caribbean just steps from my door. In addition, Carlos and Fernando, who both spoke English, were helpful and responsive to requests. One note of caution: If you want to have some wine while enjoying your patio, you might do well to consider buying it elsewhere: The Cabanas Tulum’s only wine option when I was there was a rather mediocre chilled red wine.
