“It's been over two years but still think about cabanas”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2013

We stayed at Cabanas Tulum in October 2010, and we're still trying to top it!

It is hard to imagine a more friendly, beautiful, simple (in the best way) and centring place than cabanas Tulum.

Travellers be warned, if you want flat screen TVs, DVD players, computers, video games, blaring music, pool games, and all that stuff the big hotels think we need, DO NOT go to cabanas Tulum! It's ain't there folks. If you want a place to be calm, breath in the cleanest air you've ever smelled, eat fresh seafood right from the boat, and swim in the moonlight on powder white sand go to cabanas Tulum!

We went with three kids (9, 7, 1) and they loved it just as much as we did. I can't wait to return and fancy checking out the new beach hotel rooms (my wife prefers the more rustic originals).

I cannot say enough about the staff (be warned they love kids and will make off with your babies making coo coo sounds to them, until you're ready for them to come back), the location, the beach, the feeling of the place. It is almost perfect. Plus it is only a super cheap cab ride from the town of Tulum and lots of natural activities.

I would love a more full flavoured beer at ziggys (tacate and corona are kinda bland) but other than that perfection!

Dear Guest,

How wonderful that you still think about your vacation at Cabañas Tulum after two years time, this really means much to us. We remember your sweet little angels and how they enjoyed their beach holiday. Since you stayed with us there have been many changes to the better. Cabañas Tulum is still a family friendly Hotel but our adjoining sister Hotel The Beach is a small adult only upscale boutique Hotel. So should you consider to treat your wife and you to a special anniversary getaway, here we are! Again thank you very much for your lovely words and for being our guests,
We are looking forward to welcoming you and your family back, at Cabañas Tulum or The Beach.

Muchas Gracias

At first we were not very happy that we had chosen Cabañas Tulum but after 6 days we had really settled in and accepted the quirks of the place.
When we entered our upstairs ocean-view room we were hit by the fabulous view out over the beach and sea, but also by the fact that the room did not have one item of furniture except for the shelf above the bed. Nowhere to put our cases, nowhere to sit, apart from the balcony, no table to put our books on. The staff were very nice about it and eventually brought up a table and two chairs from the beach, but they agreed they had had complaints about this before.
To stay at Cabañas you must like SAND! It is lovely powdery sand but you are in it all the time and it tends to get everywhere in the room as it is sandy in the restaurant and right up to the room stairs.
The bedrooms had air-con between 7pm and 7am but, despite their efforts to repair it, ours was only working for 3 nights out of 6.
As mentioned before, breakfast was good but the tiny pieces of bread were very poor and we had to keep asking for more. A tip was asked for every time despite breakfast being included in the price. Also, you have to ask for a breakfast voucher at reception every morning which is inconvenient as it is a sandy walk there through the parking area.
We ate out most nights but it is very difficult to walk far along the road as there is no lighting and it is narrow and very busy at times. A taxi has to be taken and the fare into the town is set at 70 pesos so it is worth going and eating at one of the other restaurants as the menu did not seem to change at Ziggys.
A nice place to re-charge your batteries but remember it is 'eco' and so does not have many of the amenities of a large resort hotel: no TV, no room telephone, no furniture, but priceless sea views!

Room Tip: Upstairs ocean view rooms are away from direct beach access

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review about your stay at our Hotel, we are always eager to know about our guests' experience, preferences and suggestions.
As you have mentioned, when you first arrived you were expecting a big resort Hotel in a busy touristic area like Cancun and not a quiet place like Tulum with its beach and jungle vicinity. This is why we are even more happy that you fell in love with this little piece of paradise eventually, no television, nor phone or busy nightlife regardless, because this is what Tulum is all about.
Certainly, we apologize for the technical problem about the a/c, as our management explained you, we had to wait for a replacement part to arrive from a different city and since we were fully booked we could not change you to a different room. You stayed in our Deluxe section which soon will be part of our sister Hotel The Beach Tulum. Regarding your comment about the lack of furniture, it is to say the idea of open space is prevalent in the room design however we appreciate your suggestions. Thank you again for being our guest and we hope you will choose Tulum and us again in the future.

Muchas Gracias

After learning of a booking error upon our arrival, we were put up in the hotel next door. Not a problem for us, especially when we saw how the management and staff stepped up to make up for it. The substitute room at Los Lirios was similar to what we were expecting at Cabanas Tulum. The restaurant not as nice as Cabanas Tulum, but we were able to eat at and use the sevices of either hotel. You might consider booking directly with the hotel rather than going through a third party website. I'm pretty sure the mix up was a result of poor communication between our booking agency and the hotel. On the third night we moved back to Cabanas Tulum, to an upgraded room. The staff and management of the hotel, restaurant, and bar were unbelievable when it came to great service and friendliness. We feel like we've met some great people and can't wait to go back. We've been to different parts of Mexico some 17 times, and this trip to Tulum was by far the best.

Room Tip: Although we didn't stay on the regular beachfront room we had booked, the Deluxe beachfront room...

We stayed here in our second trip to Tulum & loved the facilities. The staff were amazing & we got to know them throughout the stay. Rooms were very nice for the Eco-chic area. My personal favorite thing was having nightly air conditioner which is not always available in this area. The restaurant on site was delicious & offered 2-1 drink specials most of the time plus complimentary breakfast served daily. Great value for your money! Would definitely return!

Dear Guest,

We thank you for your review and are so happy you loved staying with us. We believe that comfort and Eco-friendly ambiance is possible but also essential when thinking of the geographical proximity of the Sian Ka'an biosphere and the Cenote shaped region.
It was our pleasure having you as our guest and hopefully see you soon in the future.

We recently spent a very relaxing week at Cabanas Tulum. What a pleasure to wake up and be able to walk out our door onto a gorgeous beach! Our newer superior deluxe room was huge with a lovely bathroom and a roof deck where we viewed the stars each night. While I was there, I viewed all of the room categories (I am a travel agent), and all were just fine. The newer rooms which will soon be part of the new Beach Hotel are more spacious with nicer bathrooms, but the older rooms, although much smaller, also had some charm to them. All rooms are immaculate. The beach is beautiful and constantly cleaned. Unfortunately, the water was pretty rough when we were there due to the winds, but at least we never felt hot. While we were there, a fashion shoot was taking place. I know that a previous reviewer complained about this, but no one else seemed to mind at all....in fact it was quite entertaining. They were very quiet about it so I don't see how it could have been a bother. The beach area is very large, so it would have been easy to just move to another comfortable beach bed.

Here are some pros and cons:
Pros:
Gorgeous beach just outside of your room
Nice and immaculate rooms
Very helpful, professional, friendly staff
Great daily breakfast included
Daily refilling of water bottles is environmentally friendly and very smart
Comfortable beach loungers and beach beds
Great walkable location
Air conditioning if needed for sleeping (from 7pm-7am)
Restaurant on premises

Cons:
Poor lighting when walking to lobby at night (I think they are going to fix this)
Rooms need bureau or shelves to place clothes
Sometimes the bed sheets were nubby

Overall, we would definitely recommend Cabanas Tulum or The Beach for a lovely Tulum vacation. You can't go wrong here.

Dear Guest,

On behalf of the whole Cabañas Tulum & The Beach team "Muchas Gracias" for taking the time and sharing your experience about your stay at our Hotel. We are so pleased to read that you spent such a relaxing and pleasurable week with us. Thank you also for your lovely comment about our Beach Front Standard and Partial Sea View rooms, we also believe that these rooms are charming although not defined as deluxe. We appreciate your feedback and will take all three points into consideration, regarding the lighting at the pool area this will soon change with the upcoming opening of the new lobby at The Beach Hotel ( Deluxe & Superior section).
It was really nice meeting you and hopefully see you again in the future.

Muchas Gracias

I have travelled all over the world and Cabanas Tulum may be my favourite place that I've ever stayed.

I will return. That is a guarantee.

I went with my wife. The service was attentive when asked for, but not in your face.

We loved the room. It was private and right on the beach. It had a view, a private roof deck and a hammock on its bottom deck.

The place was extremely romantic and had a great comfortable feel about it. I would highly recommend it.

Went here for 1 week and stayed in a ocean view bungalow.
The location is at the nicest place of the Tulum beach were the beach is wide and has many nice palmtrees, a good place to take a walk on the beach, north or south, the beach is cleaned every morning.
The staff was very friendly and helped us to arrange trips for diving and sightseeing, they also gave us great advice on places to eat.
Rooms are nice and have a little porch with a hammock and chairs, there are also chairs at the beach.
We really enjoyed the food at the Ziggy beach and this is the place were you eat your included breakfast, right next to the resort.
If you would like to go for other meal options there are a few of them along the beach but we found out that the restaurants we liked best were always on the "jungle-side" of the road, just walk north or south from the resort.

Room Tip: Ocean view bungalow get more wind and noice from the ocean, if you dont like this pick a bungalow aw...
