“oasis in Tulum”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2013

We stayed here only one night to be close to the Cancun Airport at the end of a week driving in rural Yucatan. It was quite a shock to enter resortland after our quiet week but Don Diego was a perfect little quiet garden oasis in the midst of the very busy coast. The hotel is beautifully put together with lush plantings. Our room was very comfortable and opened out onto a small patio with a hammock and chairs. If you have a car you can go to a beach club which the front desk recommended and for $12 spend the day at a spectacular beach with lounge chairs, bathrooms, food, etc. Really the beach is unbelievable. The icing on the cake is the great restaurant associated with this hotel. After a week of Yucatecan food (and even without that week) the French food at the restaurant was just delicious.

It is important to know that this place is very far from from the beach, the center of town and the main restaurants. Be ready to do a lot of walking or spend more money on a taxi. Add to that the loud music. There is a bar on the other side the of street that continuously play loud cheesy music until very late in the night. I was told that was part of a Mayan celebration, but it turned this was just normal routine. I could not sleep my first night there until 4am. No fun.

Additionally, the website can be misleading given that the listed rates are for the low season. I reported the issue to the owner who failed to acknowledged it. Overall i felt this place was overpriced for what I was getting in exchange.

Overall, the place is nice and pleasant; however, I could have stayed by the beach at a more convenient hotel for way less than what I paid. Gladly i changed hotel after two nights. That was a smart move.

Stayed here for one night on Exodus's La Ruta Maya tour. The hotel consists of little bungalows and a block of rooms arranged around gardens and a pool. Our room was upstairs in the block and had a little sun room with hammock off the main bedroom. Dinner there was very good thanks to the French owners, particularly the coffee-crusted beef.

My one gripe is that very loud music started up nearby at around midnight until about 5am and that it is so far out on the edge of Tulum that a taxi into town is the only practical option.

Found the Tulum mayan ruins disappointing compared to other sites we visited in central America and don't visit on a Monday as that's when the cruise ships stop and the beach is like Spring Break with hundreds of American coeds...horrible!

The hotel is just south of Tulum in a large walled garden area. We booked a bungalow and half board. The dinner was very good as was the breakfast. The best part was learning about the native Mayan Melapona bees which are stingerless. The owner is very involved with the local Mayan community in bringing back these endangered bees which were sacred to the ancient Maya.

Overall a nice place, an oasis on the edge of Tulum town. Has an excellent restaurant for dinner at very reasonable prices. The main downside is that the owner is a chain smoker and many of the guests are also French and smokers. If they made an effort to contain the smoking the review would improve.

If you agree, I would like to ask Tripadvisor to remove this review, as I feel that it is a very personal opinion.
In every public places you will find the same debate : pro and cons of smokers.
In all our rooms, it's prohibited to smoke.
In the public areas of the hotel - all are outdoors - I would be embarassed to ask anybody not to smoke.
Thank you for your understanding.

My wife and I had four great days at Don Diego de la Selva on our honeymoon. When we booked the nights we told the hotel that our stay there was a part of our honeymoon. When we then arrived the staff had surprised us with kissing swans folded from towels and rose leaves spread on the bed and all around our room :-) We were so touched and very glad for that they did such a nice thing for us.

In general the staff was absolutely amazing. Smiling and helping if you had any questions.

The pool area is very nice. It’s always possible to find a spot in either the sun and shadow spots during the day. The rooms are good and beds are spacious. In our room we had a hammock at the room’s indoor balcony where you could slide up the big doors so you still could the feeling of being outside.

I think the location of the hotel is one of the hotels best features. It’s located in the end of a street on a silent side street. Therefore you won’t get the lousy annoyances you will have if living in the center of Tulum. This is especially appreciated when you are relaxing by the pool or eating at the good restaurant at the hotel.
And even so that the hotel is located in the end of Tulum there’s still only a 10-minute walk to the bus terminal, which is considered to be the absolute center of Tulum.

I can only think of two minor annoyances about the hotels. Firstly there are dogs nearby that are barfing all night. Secondly the room could need a refrigerator so you can keep your drinking water cool. But as mentioned it’s only minor annoyances – Don Diego de la Selva is a fantastic place to stay.

This hotel was one of the three that I stayed at when in Tulum. I would say that all three hotels had their own charm. This one has an amazing garden with a pool and a wonderful restaurant on site. In fact, the restaurant was so good that I kept coming back to it after I checked into another hotel.
The rooms were clean with very good simple design. The whole setting of the hotel transports you into a different world. It has to be experienced for sure. The hotel is at the end of town which makes it for a nice walk to the center of Tulum. The town is very safe so walk at any time or get a taxi if you do not fee like it. Perfect hotel for couples who enjoy a fine dining experience...

Room Tip: all rooms looked like a great room to me :-)!
