“Great staff, location, but maybe not the best place for honeymooners”

Mezzanine

Overall, I'd definitely recommend the hotel, with a few caveats.

Let's start with the positives:

The staff of this hotel was absolutely wonderful. Alex, Oyuki and Mario can always be found in the office or restaurant and will help you with a smile. Alex in particular has a good sense of the restaurants in the area and activities to do, though Mezzanine cleverly leaves a booklet for each guest with such information.

The location and view are among the best in Tulum. We stayed in room #1, which faces the ocean (the hotel rests on a rocky hillside about 25 feet from the water), and waking up and looking out the window was a joy.

Another upside: Freebies. Included in the room price is the use of snorkel equipment, bikes and kayaks.

The drawbacks: Most of all, there was a lack of privacy, which was big for us because we were on our honeymoon. Every time we wanted to make out, we had to diligently shut all of the wood slats on the windows or we could have been easily viewed by other guests, maintenance and cleaning staff, and restaurant goers strolling on the deck area (which, in theory, is only for guests). And we didn't like doing that because having the slats open lets in the cooling ocean breeze.

The noise. The restaurant, just steps away from the four nearly-$300-a-night rooms facing the ocean, has "hip" music playing for most of the day, which often consists of songs with fast beats, so taking a nap was hard. I once inquired about potentially turning down the music if we were bothered but was essentially rebuffed. And the Friday night parties at the restaurant/bar are truly loud and last until about 2:30 a.m. or 3 a.m. (though I'll admit the DJ is really good). Forget about trying to sleep through it without earplugs and Ambien, and we had a tough time because my wife had gotten food poisoning (not from the hotel restaurant) that evening and needed to rest.

One other note: Better leave a tip for the maids or all they will do is make the bed, unlike Ana Y Jose, where the entire room was cleaned no matter what we left for the maids. (We didn't realize until after we left that leaving tips for maids is generally expected.)

Also, the restaurant is excellent. The pad thai is among the best I've ever had, and breakfast dishes are top-rate.

Don't believe any of the reviews you have read! This place is way bettter! Located on the beach, the Mezzanine is a super chic and modern boutique hotel. It managed to make these 40 year olds feel cool and hip. My wife says it's the best hotel we have ever stayed in and I have to agree with her. We spent 5 nights here (Room 4) and it was worth the money. The restaurant's food was great and the 2 for 1 margaritas really hit the spot. Unbelievably clean and neat. The views are incredible, the beach uncrowded. What more could you ask for? If you are thinking about staying here, book it now, don't wait!

My husband found this idyllic spot while web surfing one day. This property is hip and amazing. It has 9 rooms with 3 different types. We stayed 4 nights in the middle option for $285/night, but I believe the others are either $173 and $500. Our room was a beautiful, clean room bathed in light and kissed by wind -- no AC but there was absolutely no need for it. (One note for the modest -- if you leave the screened windows open the curtains will blow in and it is possible that someone could see you laying in your bed. This made me slightly self-conscious, but it wasn't a big problem for us). The ocean-view room had a very open, airy feeling created by thatched roofing over a very tall loft. The sitting room up the spiral staircase could be used for another couple (they don't allow children under 16), as the futon opens up into a bed. The bathroom is lovely -- nice tiled shower and great-smelling toiletries. The hotel is perched on a little bluff overlooking the clear, turquoise ocean. There are chaises and mattresses grouped on the decking so you can enjoy the sun with more privacy and without getting sand blown all over you. I was so impressed with our room that I brought several different couples who were at the restaurant to tour it!
The restaurant on the property serves primarily (excellent!) Thai food and they feature one Mexican specialty each day. Everything we ate was absolutely delicious. The Thai beef salad, poblano Huitlacoche special, the shrimp for dinner, the Huevos Rancheros and humongous fresh fruit platter for breakfast -- YUM. This is also one of the few places that we could enjoy Bohemia beer (why is it so hard to find it in Mexico?). You can enjoy your meal in a lovely dining room, on the balcony out front or down near the cliff's edge on a deck overlooking the ocean. Big sails are used to help provide a little shade for the sunburned. They also have a couple of bean bags for lounging -- very comfy!
The staff at Mezzanine is wonderful. From our first greeting from Margarita (con sal ;-) ) through all our many dealings with waiters and bartenders (I already miss Sergios #1 & #2, Armando and all the rest) to the managers, Katrina & Alex -- every one of them seems truly happy to be there and willing to make your stay pleasant.
The place has a large rave-y sort of party on Fridays which goes til 2:30am, and we were really looking forward to it, but, embarrassingly, I became very tired and fell asleep at around 11:30. Before I fell asleep the crowd was treated to a group playing African music and performing African dances. After that the music is really thumping.
Down from the deck are steps leading to the beach of fine white sand and beautiful blue water. Tulum ruins are walking distance from the hotel and it was also fun to walk down the beach and stop for a beer at the little palapa shack with swings for bar stools. Tulum itself has a very mellow vibe. Be sure and stop at Zama's for dinner and live music one night -- the best night to go is supposedly Sundays when they have a large BBQ and free salsa dancing lessons.
The hotel uses both solar and wind energy -- genius, as both are in large supply. The downside for some is that you cannot use a blowdryer or other hair appliance (ponytails ladies!), there is no TV or computer usage. Power is very difficult for this part of the Peninsula. Sometimes we all need a lesson that less is more, right?
Anyway, I would recommend this place to anyone. Truly a delight!

My wife and I stayed at Mezzanine for 5 days last week. We were looking for a quiet place to unwind without phones or TV, but we didn’t want to camp on the beach either. Mezzanine provided the perfect fit for our needs.

We booked late (just a few weeks before our stay) so the only rooms available were in the basement. The room didn't have much of a view (except under the deck) but it was clean, well appointed and big enough for us. We rarely spent time in the room other than sleeping, so the room was not an issue for us. I should note that as of this week the hotel actually has NINE rooms. Three in the basement, four regular rooms, and two high-end rooms they just finished above the restaurant (very nice but expensive I'm sure).

We were most impressed with the staff there, and the attentive service we received. By the second day virtually all of them knew us by name (I don’t know how) and we were thrilled with the attention they gave us. Alex the manager was terrific. Hopefully no bigger hotels find out about him and hire him away, he is a great asset.

We ate many meals at the restaurant, but one of our favorite experiences was finding the local restaurants. Aside from Mezzanine we loved Hechizo (expensive but awesome food), La Zebra (best ambience) and my wife’s favorite was Cetli in town for high-end Mexican. Note: We spent over $100 USD at each of these restaurants for two people, there are cheaper options. La Nave was good too.

This is not a full-service, all-inclusive resort-type experience. If you are looking to hang out at the pool all day getting drunk on free alcohol and eating lousy buffet food, this is not the place for you. In fact, if that is what you are looking for you should probably avoid Tulum altogether (except for the canned bus tour to the ruins that can be arranged by the concierge at your mega-resort). We walked to the ruins on nearly deserted beaches, swam and snorkeled in the clear blue ocean and watched the kite-boarders. They have bikes you can use and we rode them to Grand Cenote to go snorkeling, which I highly recommend, although it was a long ride (don't tell Alex). The party on Friday night was a lot of fun too (who knew there were so many hippies in that place?).

Tulum is a laid-back, unplugged kind of place, and that is why it is special. There is no power to the hotels on the beach, and it turns out that is because they don’t want it. This keeps the mega-resorts out, and helps the small hotels there maintain their own charm. We can only hope it stays that way!

Pros: Beautiful beach and scenery. Rooms chic and comfortable. Fabulous shower. Crowd-free and unique. Restaurant is excellent and the staff is friendly and helpful. (Alex the manager speaks very good English and will bend over backwards to help you.) Fast, thorough, discrete maid service. Short taxi ride from Tulum. Two-for-one margaritas in the afternoon. (My favorite was the raspberry with mint.)
Cons: Believe the reviewers who complain about lack of privacy. If you want to sun or read on the decks you may find yourself elbow-to-elbow with other guests even though there are only four rooms. Also, the pool would make a very nice Koi pond, but is not conducive to poolside lounging or swimming.
I would recommend the Mezzanine highly to anyone looking for a vacation that takes them away from the hotel during the day or only plans to stay a couple of nights. Someone who is looking for deep, undisturbed relaxation at their hotel -- one of the advantages one might expect in such a small property -- might be disappointed.
