“Beautiful place but poor service and overpriced”

Ana y Jose Charming Hotel and Spa

We went to Ana y Jose as part of our honeymoon. The resort is beautiful and right on the beach. The pools are great and it was all very luxurious.

Whilst the food was very good, the service was poor. I was expecting friendly staff due to the intimate nature of the hotel but everyone was very unfriendly and we often waited ages just to be given a menu.

For the price you pay, I would have expected some things to be thrown in e.g. free water/free coffee in the room/welcome bottle of wine as it was our honeymoon. There was nothing of the sort.

Overall - a beautiful place but was let down by how unfriendly everyone was.

Enjoyed our stay in the beach front casita Agua del Mar. It was perfectly located steps from the beach and the spa. It was very private, well furnished and beautifully designed. The king bed was very comfortable and the linens very good quality. Everything was immaculately kept including the room.
In general the food in the area was not remarkable. The Ana y Jose restaurant had a very nice atmosphere of being both sophisticated and casual, but the food was good not great. It is both Italian and Mexican. The dinner dishes were too ambitious and consequently not well executed and often arrived cold. I would have preferred simple food that was fresh and delicious. The restaurant is pricey which I wouldn't mind if the food were special. It has the potential to improve.
They did better with their lunch menu which had among other things, very good salads, ceviche and guacamole. Breakfast was also very good. We found the food at Maya Tulum much better for dinner.
Overall, the hotel is very well run. It is perfect if you are looking for something not too large, right on the beach and less rustic then the other places. Also it was nice to have a pool to take a dip in for a change from the beach..although not essential. Most other places don't have pools.
My husband loved the A/C in the room. Most places don't have it. I would definitely stay there again.

“Second stay at Ana y Jose and we loved it...”

Ana y Jose Charming Hotel and Spa

Apr 4, 2008

Booked six months at least in advance with hotel. Oscar handles the reservations from Cancun office and he is very busy and does not always reply fast...eventually he gets back to you but patience is key. We stayed in Deseo which is directly oceanfront second floor with excellent view and sounds of waves right in your bed. We love this suite. Service at the hotel is excellent with Ignacio at the front desk particularily helpful with anything you need. Restaurant very good although the menu does get old after awhile...could have some specials etc. to spice it up. We booked the five nights with transfers and breakfast plus spa treatments and given that we wanted all of those components was fine with us and only choice for high season. The whole atmosphere of Tulum and Ana Y Jose is laid back and relaxing. The nights are so beautiful with the stars and no lights to dim the sky. We did venture out to eat at Zamas which is always good and priced right. For a special treat I booked the much talked about Hechizo. The couple who own/run the restaurant could not be any nicer and hospitable but the food (at least what we had) was not to our liking. As it gets only rave reviews on TA I wanted to mention this and we did discuss it with Ignacio and he said many clients have reported this to him.....so decide for your self if you want to try it...many people do like it we just did not like our food....I had Halibut which is not local and I am not sure why that was the fish of choice that day? Clearly Tulum is not for everyone but if you want a very comfortable way to experience this still lowkey and beautiful beach area Ana Y Jose is a great choice.

Our family stayed for five nights in one of the superior suites that had a king bed and two singles with a semi-private pool in back. The room was beautifully decorated and extremely comfortable. The semi-private pool was also great. The hotel is on a beautiful stretch of beach with fantastic boogie boarding. The restaurant has a sand floor for a unique barefoot dining experience. The food was excellent if a bit pricey, though one or two dishes were disappointing. The hotel offers a very convenient package with a rental car and breakfast. You pick up and drop off the car at the Cancun airport at your convenience, which makes transferring the 2 hours to Tulum as easy as possible. Breakfasts are fanastic. The package also includes two spa treatments which are also very pleasant. It is true that this hotel caters to families, so it is perhaps not the best choice if you are trying to avoid them, though from our explorations it seems among the nicest hotels in Tulum. A great dinner away from this hotel is a Posada Marguerita down the beach.

“Beautiful rooms and beach...poor service and mediocre food.”

Ana y Jose Charming Hotel and Spa

The rooms are beautiful. The property is beautiful. The beach is gorgeous although it can be very breezy with a rough ocean. There are plenty of beach chairs and palapas so it's not like one of those resorts where you need to have someone run down at 6:00 a.m. to cover chairs with towels and beach bags.
The service was not good. It sometimes takes forever to get someone to take an order, or even bring you a menu on the beach. No one understands simple requests like bringing drinks before or at least with the food, or bringing an appetizer before or at least with the main course.
The people who work there are lovely with the exception of the manager who is a liar. More on that later.
After our first breakfast we ate our breakfast elsewhere even though it was included. It was so unenjoyable between the food and the awful coffee, which I believe was instant.
aWe were also surprised at the limited selection of beer and that they had no beer in bottles, only cans. We aren't beer drinkers except we love Modelo Negro or foreign beers in a bottle. The cans taste different.
The hotel is overpriced for what you get, but, it is the only hotel with A.C. Because we found Tulum charming we looked into a few other places while we were there for a possible return trip but found they weren't much less and their accomodations were not as luxurious as Ana Y Jose.
If you do go to Tulum we recommend Posada Margherita for meals and also Tres Lunes, a coffee house for great coffee and breakfast. Both have great atmospheres.
We had planned to spend several nights at a different resort and after a few days at Ana Y Jose inquired about cutting our stay short by one day. We were getting tired of leaving for every meal and wanted a place where the food was good as were really had wanted a vacation where we plopped on the beach and didn['t have to go anywhere. We were told by an employee in the office that would be fine and confirmed with him through a lengthy conversation that we would be refunded one night of our stay and for the days of our car rental we weren't going to use.
When we went to finalize our bill after already paying for the extra night at the other resort the manager refused to honor his employees representation, was rude, nasty and condescending and lied to us. He refused to reimburse us.
Also, don't be fooled by the little espresso machine with the pods in the rooms. I have never been to a hotel that charges for coffee made in the room. We were charged for every espresso pod we used at the rate of $2.50:00, which is not only outrageous, but also unfair because the machine often doesn't work. It will take the pod but not make the coffee.
As much as I don't want Tulum to loose it's rustic charm by development it would be great if some of the other guest house got A.C.
