“We'll be back!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 days ago NEW

My wife and I stayed at Retiro Maya again (third time in 12yrs), and had exactly the low key experience we remembered. The best thing about this place is location. Quiet beach right out your door, we stayed in a palapa as we always have and loved it. The service is always good and Luu (the owner) remembered us from our previous visits and it was a pleasure catching up with her again. The beach area of Tulum is growing fast and Retiro Maya is still on a stretch of beach that hasn't yet been overrun with development. When we go to Mexico, this is exactly what we're looking for, quiet natural beauty. To be clear, this is not a five star resort, it's not supposed to be. It's basic, clean, friendly, romantic, and did I mention quiet? When Tulum succumbs to the five star resort scene, we'll have to find another paradise. See you again soon Luu!! Larry & Alicia

We arrived in late morning at our booked hotel on the beach at Tulum. Flavia the manager taking over from owner who was taking some time off greeted us warmly. After telling her of our bus ordeal getting here from Belize she offered us an upgrade to ocean view cabana with an incredible view of the sunrise from our bed. The room was very comfortable, good shower lights all evening, though you will need a headlamp if you want to read at night. Continental breakfast was a bit sparse, yogurt would of been a nice addition with the fruit. Taco restaurant was excellent and beach bar very nice. But the best part was the personal touch from Flavia. She called taxis for us, booked a tour and always made sure we connected with our drivers. Other good restaurants nearby and nice walking and swimming in the ocean with few other people. If you want to get away from the crowds this is the place to book.

Tulum itself is unbeatable for it's combination of great beaches and ocean, relaxed funk ambiance, and great restaurants scattered along the beach, but Retiro Maya needs to substantially up its game before I would consider staying there again.

We rented the 3 bedroom Casa with 2 other couples. The location is outstanding, just steps from the beach...but with a private deck and a small play area sheltered from view by a berm and vegetation...but retaining wonderful views of the sea. The space in the Casa is good, with a large living area/kitchen and 3 comfortable bedrooms. The only layout problem is that you have to walk through 1 bedroom...or walk outside and unlock a separate entrance...to get to the 3rd bedroom. Updated, and with better management, this could be a great place.

But it's not now. What didn't we like? In brief: For the first 5 days, we had no hot water and the cold water barely dripped from the showers. We had one of the staff look at this problem the first full day there and they told us it that this was a good as it gets. So we decided to make do. But five days in it got so bad no one could really shower...and the women couldn't was their hair... so we complained energetically...and luckily connected with Alex...and he brought several people in. Finally, one of the staff discovered that the hot water to the Casa just hadn't been turned on...and after that...and we had reasonable water...thought even then only 2 of the 3 showers were really usable. And in the course of the repair, one of the guys told Alex in Spanish (thinking we wouldn't understand) that he'd been told not to turn it on. When we complained about this to Luu, she blamed us for not complaining loudly enough in the beginning....and walked away.

And then there we the toilets that didn't fully flush...even after 1/2 dozen tries...leaving floaters ever present. And then the snake we killed in the bedroom, scattered roaches, and our rat. The rat showed up the first day and snacked on bananas...and by the second day had gotten into the cabinets and our chips and crackers. On complaint, a half-hearted effort was made by putting a few traps around, but in the end I had to hunt him down myself with a butcher knife and chop his head off. The staff were helpful in removing him and cleaning the floor and the knife.

And then there was the fact that they weren't ready for us when we arrived. The place was dirty, the refrigerator had been unplugged, etc. etc. Once the got up to speed, things were operating (other than the toilets and showers), but the refrigerator looked like something out of a 1970s dorm room and the range (no microwave or oven) was filthy and missing half it's knobs...which you didn't need because only 2 of 4 burners worked anyway.

The staff, particularly Alex (Roman Alehandro Jimenez Neri), were as helpful as they could be given the inherent run down nature of the place. And the place was kept clean. But the basics (e.g., toilets, showers, refrigerator, range) were either non-functional or marginally functional. If Luu would take a couple weeks rent and reinvest in the place, and focus just a little on managing her business and treating people decently...as opposed to becoming one with the universe...this could be a great place.

But as it is, it could ruin your vacation. Ours was a pretty hardy bunch...with experience traveling widely both in Mexico and elsewhere...but there was some discussion midweek about returning to the US or trying to find other accommodations. Don't miss Tulum, but until Luu gets her act together, finding other accommodations is what you should do.

We stayed here longer than we intended because it was just what we were looking for - a peaceful, quiet place on the beach and yet set back and protected by a little berm that provided privacy. The staff were super friendly and the owner, who lives in the adjoining property is closely supervising and attending to her guests. The room was thatch roof with an attached bathroom and was rustic and charming. Our bathroom had two coconut palms - one growing through the roof and the other in a little open air space between the bedroom and bathroom. Definitely one of the most unique bathrooms we have experienced! There is a good Mexican restaurant associated with the hotel (Tacos) which also has a bar on the beach.

The hotel is located about halfway down the hotel beach area so its a short beach walk to other hotel associated restaurants and yoga/massage locations on the beach.

If you want to avoid the feeling of being surrounded by more densely situated rooms with lights, noise, etc. this is definitely the place to stay. Lights on the property and all the rooms are off at 10 pm and so is the wi-fi - just you and the noise of the ocean waves not even 50 ft away.

Room Tip: Our room was IMIX (#2) and was terrific

I've been going to Tulum for more than 10 years. I often stay at a larger yoga resort but they were full when I tried to book a room on my most recent trip. After exploring alternatives, I found Retiro Maya - what a gem! Although not as high end as some other spots along the beach, it has an energy and charm that make it lovely. The owner Luu is a wonderful woman who makes everyone feel welcome and included in the intimate setting. The cabanas are simple but comfortable - hot water, electricity, etc. there are also three dining areas: a breakfast area (continental breakfast is included with the room rate) with a view of the beach, a roadside dinner restaurant AND a bar on the beach with swings as bar stools. The beach bar is one of the coolest spots in tulum. Rosie is the bartender and is super nice and fun. The vibe is chill and it is RIGHT on the beach. Very cool! All in all it's a great laid back place.

My girlfriend and i had a great time at Retiro Maya. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The cabana was fun and literally on the beach. Free breakfast was a nice perk. Wifi works well near the lobby and occasionally even worked in our cabana. We were supposed to stay in Cancun our last 3 nights but we loved Tulum and Retiro Maya so much that we actually drove back down to Tulum for the remainder of our trip. I highly recommend staying here while in Tulum!
