“Magic”

Cabanas Retiro Maya

Magic

I spent eight days of magic at Retiro Maya. My intention was to be quiet and on my own with not too many tourism around. Retiro Maya was the ideal place for it. I spent a wonderful and magic time in an embracing and warm atmosphere, the place has a family feel to it, and that makes it very special. The spot on the beach where Retiro Maya is situated is the most quiet and peaceful one. I loved the absence of electric light in the evenings, and watched the stars for hours on the beach and even in the bed I could listen to the continuous sound of the ocean. The cabanha was cosy with the mosquito net hanging over the bed and I have to make a comment on the beautiful bathrooms of the cabanha where a palm tree grew from the floor in the corner. I could have a glimpse on the sky while showering and listening to the bird songs early in the morning. The breakfast was delicious with fresh fruits, yoghurt, cereals, toast… and coffee or tea as much as I wanted. Many more things to add, but what rests to say; one has to really be there to experience the magic at Retiro Maya. I had the best week of my life..and will definitely go back to encounter the magic again. Thanks Lu!

Luckily, we stumbled upon this amazing beach front cabana while in Tulum, and it made our trip! All of the cabanas are beachfront, there isnt a bad cabana on the property. I fell asleep to the sound of waves crashing each night and woke up to the most beautiful beach I have ever seen. The staff was courteous and efficient, and we came back to a clean, organized cabana each day. Lu, the owner, is always gracious and attentive to whatever your needs. We felt so welcome and taken care of. The only bad part was having to leave! Be sure to check out this heaven on earth!

Francesco and I went to Guatemala and Mexico for our honeymoon. Flew to Cancun and run away from there...Tulum was our destination, recommended by Giulia, a friend who had been there. Did not have a cabana reserved, was supposed to be low season but many places were fully booked. Saw a couple with available canbanas and then found Retiro Maya. We immediately loved the cabanas just looking at those from outside. Saw a couple inside, decided to stay. The hammock was my dream! Loved walking barefoot, on the sand covering the floor of the room. Still have in my mind a picture of the bed and those candles made the place so romantic at night! The place is really quite and peaceful. We were lucky, was very windy and there were no hungry mosquitos flying around us. The bathroom was a great experince, felt like having a shower outside! The water was slightly salted and not always warm, but if you choose to stay in a place on the beach, cannot expect more than this. Maybe it needs a few more lights at night, I was a bit afraid when we would get back as the place was really dark. But the candles in the cabana for us were enough. Lu is a nice person, a business women! Ciao Mexico!

I stayed at Retiro Maya at the end of May/beginning of June and it was an amazing experience. I was vacationing alone and wanted to find a quiet, rustic place where I could commune with nature and concentrate on myself. As soon as you walk up the sand pathway to the resort, you feel like you are in paradise. And that feeling doesn't stop until you leave. From the open dining area to the patios of the cabanas all you see is sand and ocean. It is as if you stepped back in time to a simpler and purer existence.

This is a rustic and eco friendly resort that may not be for everyone. There is no electricity in your cabana - candlelight only, no running water before 7 am and nature surrounds you everywhere (including in your cabana). All of this is the reason I chose to go to Tulum and particularly to Retiro Maya. You truly feel like you are a million miles away from everyone and everything (however, a five minute cab ride and you are in the small but authentic town on Tulum). There is a soothing calmness that surrounds Retiro Maya that Lu, the owner, calls magical. There is definitely something about this place and the people who work there that makes it very special.

The beach is one of the prettiest of all the resorts. When I arrived, Retiro Maya was booked with a wedding party and though all the cabanas were filled, it still felt like I had a private beachfront.

The cabanas are comfortable, but again rustic. You sleep with your door open listening to ocean. The food was very good, prepared by Sergio, who is one of the nicest and cuddly people I have ever met (be sure to ask him to make you his special banana cake - it is to die for!) and Rosa, who is also wonderful. This was my first time at Retiro Maya but it was as if I was with old friends. You are made to feel extremely welcome from the start by Lu and everyone. If there was anything I needed or wanted all I had to do was ask. I strongly recommend getting a Mayan Clay massage - I had many massages while there, but this one was the best.

I cannot recommend this resort enough. I will definitely be back very soon.

“A week in paradise”

Cabanas Retiro Maya

This is the place to go if you love sand between your toes at all times, a view of the ocean from bed, have a fondness for outdoor showers and candlelight after sunset.
Just spent 8 nights here with friends for a retreat week. We were lovingly tended to by Lu the owner.
Simple meals prepared by Rosa with fresh juices: hibiscus, lemon, papaya to name a few.
We had a breeze all week which kept us cool and kept mosquitos from getting out of hand - if you suffer from hot flashes some ladies brought battery powered fans for nighttime comfort.
The beach is gorgeous and swimming was a popular activity. Retiro Maya is not far from the Tulum Ruins and the Gran Cenote, both worth a visit, but prepared for REAL heat at the ruins.
Lu can direct you to plenty of additional activities. I was pretty happy camped out in a hammock or on a beach chair or in the water.
For additional comfort bring a water bottle (they provide bottled water tank), flashlight (at least one), sunscreen, a good book, sign up for a massage - Maya Spa is just down the road and yoga classes occur at Maya Tulum.
A love of adventure is another important thing to pack. If you need amenities you might not like this - if you are a romantic spirit this is the place for you.
Enjoy.
