“Great place stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 weeks ago

A comfortable, clean, convenient and safe place to stay. Loved it there. The breakfast was great, and the chef there was awesome. It had everything I needed for a hotel, and was a perfect place from which to explore the city.

Room Tip: Wi-Fi was on the rooftop/dining area

We arrived on New Year's Eve in Tulum. Tom warned us that there might be loud celebrations all around, but the noise was not unreasonable and we felt like we were part of the local celebration. The property is small in footprint, but we had a nice little patio to sit out on with a pretty garden. The local infrastructure of Tulum is very delicate and we witnessed that on New Years Day when the city ran out of water. Tom quickly resolved the problem by brining in a water truck. The food by chef Diaz is EXCELLENT. We had the best breakfast of our trip at Posada Luna Del Sur. Every day it was different and creative. We had fun going to the beach in Tulum and we took a day trip to a nature reserve to see monkeys, which was GREAT. The room itself was very spacious and comfortable, had a small kitchen with fridge, sink and dishes. Shower was very nice, tiled, spacious. Lots of storage for longer stays. Great launching point for area sights.

Things got off to a bad start when our plane to Cancun arrived late and it was after 8 p.m. when we arrived in Tulum. I had printed off the hotel's website from the time we reserved a room, back on April 23. We followed the directions on the website numerous times, asked locals, and tried to call the number that had been on the website. It wasn't working. We finally asked a municipal policeman who was a couple of blocks away from the hotel and he gave us directions. At the hotel, a security guard who didn't speak English had my name on a list and led us to our room and gave us a key. We left our luggage and tried to find a place to eat, but by that time it was 10 p.m. and nothing within walking distance was open. Please note: although Tom (the owner) uses his cell phone to make all inquiries and reservations, the hotel itself doesn't have a phone or a desk. Reserve only if you will be using a smartphone with GPS. (I wish I had known.)
Things got better the next morning. The breakfasts prepared by Eric are delicious, the wifi on the roof (unavailable in our room) was good, and the room itself was spacious and clean and very quiet. We especially appreciated the TV, which had 6 or so channels available in English (very unusual in Mexico). We found Tom's map and personal recommendations as good as others said. We thought every restaurant he recommended was excellent and he was able to get us into a restaurant with a special meal on Christmas eve that we found fully booked on Christmas Day. Tom and his family put special treats at the door of every room for Christmas. Very thoughtful.
Although the hotel is in a poor neighborhood we always felt safe. Being in the town not the beach has the advantage of not having to deal with the terrible traffic on the beach road and taxis are cheap.

Room Tip: All rooms have a patio or balcony looking over a small garden. The balcony affords second floor room...

My husband and I had a great stay at Posada Luna del Sur. We enjoyed being in the heart of Tulum, in walking distance of many great restaurants & shops. Tom's map gave us amazing dining, beach & local tips. Breakfast was cooked to order each day, and incorporated fresh, local ingredients. The juice was delicious! The rooms were spacious and comfortable. The organic toiletries were a bonus. A fresh water cooler is included with the room, this was very appreciated - be sure to bring a water bottle. The hotel does sit in town, so expect a little "city noise" around you during the day, but night was very quiet. There is a security guard in the evening for added security. Tom helped us arrange transfer to our next destination, which was very convenient. Great service & value at Posada Luna del Sur.

We found Pousada Luna Del Sur on Tripadvisor and from the first contact with Tom, it was an easy process. He arranged everything by email and even accommodated a date change. He was so helpful in booking tours for us also, which were of a great standard and helped us see as much of Tulum and surrounds as possible. The map in each room with all his personal recommendations was fantastic, guiding us to the hidden taco stands and cafés. The Pousada staff were great and came in early a couple of mornings to give us breakfast before our tours. The rooms were comfortable and very clean and little touches like organic toiletries and a water filter were much appreciated. Couldn't recommend enough.

Great hotel for the price. Tom provides a great map with recommendations of places to go. The beach is an easy taxi ride from the hotel. Walking distance from the bus stop. Tom helped arrange tours directly from the hotel.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2014

My husband and I stayed at Posada Luna Del Sur in November 2014. Here's what we liked about the hotel: (1) Breakfast - made to order and it is fantastic; (2) Tom's map - great recommendations for restaurants and beach spots; (3) The rooms were spacious and clean.

Initially, I had some regret that we did not select a hotel on the beach. This concern abetted once we discovered how easy (and inexpensive) it was to rent a lounge chair at a nearby beach club. We also did a lot of sight-seeing, so immediate beach access was not our priority.

Room Tip: Second floor is quieter, and we could get a weak wi-fi signal in our room.

Thanks for the review, it is so much appreciated!

I understand your thinking about staying on the beach, but I assure you, you made the wise decision! No electricity, high humidity (in the jungle) and over-priced basic huts, exposed to the elements and mosquitoes, is not my idea of a vacation! If you are reading this and considering visiting Tulum, please take note that the beach strip is under-developed and you will be ¨roughing it up,¨convincing yourself that you made the right decision, when you know you didn´t. Don´t be fooled by the phrase ¨eco-chic¨ or ¨communal kitchens.¨ These really are glorified hostels, that offer nothing more than a bed with a mosquito net. Come stay with us and enjoy quality, comfort and value.

Not only do we thrive to provide you with all the comforts of home, we offer unmatched value, in a now over-priced Tulum. We are one of the original hotels in Tulum and we take pride in sharing information and other valuable tips. Often imitated, but never duplicated, Posada Luna del Sur is the wise choice. This is the reason we have more reviews that any hotel in Tulum.

Thanks again and we hope to see you back here one day!
Kind regards,
Tom
