Mosquitoes, bats, mice, tarantulas, roaches, terrible lighting... all of those things would be acceptable if we hadn't been paying $90-120/night. And we had pre-paid for 10 days there.
I've stayed in Mexico dozens of times, from hammocks in grass-hut palapas to nice rooms with A/C. The Diamante K has the amenities of the former while charging for the latter.
To top it off, they really took advantage of the large group of us that were staying there for a wedding. We were paying $90/night for a double room (#15). It was in the back (no view of anything), and smelled like a rancid outhouse -- we called it the "poop cave" -- apparently there's a leaking sewage pipe behind the place. It was impossible to sleep at night from the smell alone, and when we complained we overheard one of the maids say (in spanish) that everyone complains about that room. After 3 nights there they finally transferred us to a much nicer room (#7 -- that's one of the nicest there).
The staff tried to say that it was something recent (blamed it on the rain), but we had the feeling that the problem with #15 has been ongoing for a while, and they keep renting it out when they can.
Just about all of the rooms have a problem with light. As I said, I've stayed in grass palapas on the beach before, but these are all dark-wood with small slits that let the light through. They end up being incredibly dark, and your eyes can't adjust because of the brightness between the slits, so you end up feeling around on the ground for your belongings. And when it rains, your stuff on the floor gets wet. They have a generator which runs from dusk until midnight, but they won't put more than 10watt bulbs in the fixtures (many of them red or blue), so they don't do much more than add ambiance, and you're still using a headlamp to find your stuff.
We had an especially tough time with the staff -- It could have been that the manager was on vacation at the time -- we noticed that the 2nd in charge changed from t-shirt and shorts to a nice dress when the manager came back, and we heard the manager yelling at the staff.
Among the list of issues we had:
- They were supposed to change our laundry and towels every day, but we observed the staff going into our room with clean folded sheets, but coming back out with the same clean folded sheets (not dirty ones). They just put our same dirty sheets back on the bed.
- We had no clean towels for 5-6 days at a time. One guest was promised a towel all week, but was constantly told they're at the laundry... never got one in the 10 days they were there!
- The food and drink service was INCREDIBLY slow (even by Mexican standards), and they refused to give change most of the time (forcing you to give them a big tip or order another drink). They also doubled the posted prices and refused to honor their "drink specials"... we're talking $5 cocktails here... US prices. We were 20-30 people with money to burn in our pockets, and would have eaten and drank much more often at their bar... but we ended up feeling so ripped off at every turn that we took our business elsewhere for most of the week.
- During a rain storm, about 4 of us ended up getting soaking wet mattresses because the rain came through the roof. They did nothing about this for 2 days for anyone. For one of our friends, they ended up tearing down the whole roof (leaving bug-filled thatch all over their belongings and nowhere to stay for a day).
- Their official 'lost and found' policy (were were told) was that they would keep things for 1 day, and then kept it. Lots of lost towels, lights, and other stuff...
We ended up feeling much less rested after a week there than I have on any other vacation. Sure -- we were drinking and out in the sun during the day -- but it never felt relaxing coming home... in fact we dreaded coming back every night because of the old nasty, lumpy mattresses and pillows, the hanging beds swing and that make it hard to sleep, the bugs, the low light, not enough blankets when it got cold, no hot water in the public showers... I could go on.
If I had been paying $30/night like you do in other places, I would have been OK with it -- that's par for the course... but $90-120/night?!?
What's odd is that some friends that stayed in the sister hotel (the Esmerelda K) had a much better experience, much better service, and paid the same or less.
We think they jacked up their prices when they found out that a whole wedding party would be staying there.
My advice -- if you get a room there for $50/night or less, maybe consider it (the beach is gorgeous), but make sure it's one of the ones facing the beach (and ABSOLUTELY don't stay in #15). And don't stay there for more than a day or two, and eat elsewhere. I'd check out some of the other places up or down the beach... I think there are much better deals in Tulum.
