Most of the hotel was empty during our stay from 12/22-12/28/2007. The swing bar and swim up bar were no longer in operation. The observation tower was no longer accessible. The only food available was at the buffet 3 times a day with snacks twice a day at the pool/beach bar. The food that was intended to be hot was always luke-warm at best. There were never any iguana or pelican feedings that we saw, no salsa lessons, no snorkling equipment available. It appeared that a place once very good had been the victim of hurricanes, an economic downturn, something. The saving grace for us was meeting nice people who made our stay bearable, even pleasant and fun. And the awesome Carribean and the pools. We did manage to get a massage on the beach one day, too, and the pina colodas and frozen daquiris were good. There was also a vendor there every other day selling some nice painted pottery, and there were 2 or 3 musicians there one evening playing some good music. The location close to the little town of Tulum as well as the Mayan ruins there and to Xel-ha was OK, too. While we were there, we learned the hotel is closing for good Jan 6, 2008, and it will be sold. There appears to be a lot of potential there; it may arise again as a very nice property under different ownership in the future, after some renovations. It appeared to be mismanaged; the air conditioning ran constantly in our room and the unit was located up over a doorway where we couldn't reach it to adjust it, and there were no chairs in our room. It was too cold in the room at night and we both got colds from it.
