How can you describe a perfect experience? In two words, Piedra Escondida. My husband, daughter and I just returned from our 4th visit and we have already reserved for Feb 2008! The hotel is set on a small gorgeous, crescent shaped beach which is intimate but never crowded. Once you enter the property from the busy beach road, it is a whole new world-quiet and serene. With no clocks, television, phones, faxes, etc. Piedra Escondida provides the perfect escape from our hectic lives!

We return year after year to be greeted warmly by our Italian hosts Andrea and Riccardo, and the wonderful staff, who we now think of as old friends! One year we arrived at midnight, were escorted to our room to find it candle-lit by the hurricane lamps which are provided in each room-so romantic! The rooms are very large, extremely clean and are simple yet elegant. I particularly appreciate the generous armoire which has room to store luggage as well as all clothing. The maids add a special touch by creating adorable animals with towels and fresh flowers. All rooms have front porches with chairs and a hammock and are literally steps from the sea. There is a delightful breeze at night and the soothing sound of the waves--heaven!

Steps away from the rooms is the main building, which as a nice sitting area, bar, and restaurant which has a beautiful outdoor patio. The restaurant serves all day long, which is extremely convenient, and the food is GREAT! There are many Italian dishes as well as Mexican, and there is a large barbecue grill on the patio--in other words, a great variety on the menu. Breakfast is included with the reservation, and is EXCELLENT. (Shoes are NEVER required in the dining room!) The restaurant is well-known in the area, and many guests from other hotels dine there.

The hotel's location is ideal too-within walking distance of many shops, and internet cafe (for those who simply can't resist), a grocery store, dive shop and the most popular restaurant in the area, Zamas. There is a private parking lot across the street from the hotel which is great as many hotels don't have them.

We have looked at most of the other properties in the area, and Piedra Escondida is by far the best of the eco-friendly hotels in Tulum. For those looking for a Mexican vacation which provides a total escape from the over-built, over-crowded and over-booked large resorts, Piedra Escondida is perfect for you. It is a very special place.

February 2007
My wife and I have just spent two weeks in Yucatan, mostly at Tulum but four days at Merida.
At Tulum we stayed at three hotels including Piedra Escondida which was absolutely wonderful. Set right on a glorious private beach which is a secluded cove with white sand and rocks on either side. The rooms are comfortable and tastefully done with hot water showers and electricity which is not always the case on the Tulum coast. There are only 8 rooms. Wireless Internet is available and very good. The staff were all friendly and helpful and the service quick. The restaurant serves good food based on Italian cooking as the owners are Italian. The Mayan ruins of Tulum are close by and the snorkelling on the reef is spectacular. Value for money this is the best of the Tulum hotels. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants peace and quiet, a beautiful beach, and good food. This is paradise!
If you want it a bit of noise and fun go to Zamas next door which has a good restaurant and music, but is tatty.

we didn't have a hotel booked in Tulum and litterally went along the coast and asked in every single one of them. Piedra Escondida was by far the best one we found. Of course, it depends on what you're looking for, but if you'd like a clean and pretty room, with real walls, non see-through wooden sticks like in most cabanas, a cosy atmosphere, only 8 rooms in total, wake up in the morning and walk ahead to the beach, two steps and you are in the sand, your own white sand beach...breakfast at your leisure under a porch, lovely food and very friendly staff..overall, the perfect holiday, I wish we'd stayed more!

We just got back from five nights at Piedra Escondida. I chose this hotel in part because of the good Tripadvisor reviews, but also because it was one of the few hotels in Tulum that seemed child-friendly. We chose well. This is a lovely if rustic place that offers a very good value for the money, particularly for families travelling with small children. We stayed in the "suite"- which is really a huge room above the restaurant, and enjoyed it a lot. I was afraid of noise- from the restaurant or street, but never heard a peep after 9 PM. There is mosquito netting on the beds, but we didn't notice any bugs at the hotel at all. The staff and service are very good, The breakfast is delicious and included in the price. The food in the restaurant in general is very good- some of the best we ate in Tulum. The place is clean and well run. There is a small but lovely beach, with a nice mix of Europeans and Americans. Everyone we met was friendly, interesting, and happy to put up with some inconvenience (limited electricity in the hotel, sporatic hot water, very bad water pressure) in order to enjoy Tulum. The only things that really bothered me about this hotel was the fact that it was impossible to get coffee before 7.45 in the morning (sometimes 8 AM), and the lack of internet access (although there is an internet cafe next door). This hotel has one of the better locations in the Tulum hotel district- and I think you could probably get by without a car, but we found one useful. Zamas is close by, and great for dinner and entertainment.
