We stayed at Zamas down the road and went to El Paraiso every day to sit on their beach. The beach is outstanding at Paraiso and the beach bar is also really nice...good food and drinks and moderate prices. They do charge you $2.50 a person to use their beach chairs, though. Although we didn't stay there, I did look at their hotel and I thought it looked pretty run-down and unappealing....like the Bates Motel or something. I never did find out where the "cabanas" were, although the ones I saw that were nearby did not look at all appealing (they were dark, closed in and run-down looking).
If their public bathroom (in the restaurant) is any indication of the rest of the hotel, it doesn't look promising. The sink was broken, there was no soap, it smelled and it looked like it hadn't been cleaned in awhile. Generally neglected.
My advice is to find a nicer place to stay (there are plenty of nice cabanas in the area including Zamas, Copal, Azulik, Cabanas Las Conchita, Maya Tulum) that are a short cab ride from Paraiso. Then, you can easily catch a cab to Paraiso and sit on their beach. That's what we did every day during our vacation and it was great. It really is the nicest beach that we saw in Tulum when we were there and it's a great swimming beach (not rocky).
I've included a bunch of photos of the beach and beach bar so you can see how nice it is.
