Just thought I'd post a review here seeing how some people have been giving Zamas negative reviews. Noisy road? What, like the four trucks that drive by a day actually bothered you? C'mon.
The place is GREAT. The view? Fantastic. Out of hand. We lucked out and had "room 20", which was the top floor of a two-level building which was bigger than my apartment and my girlfriend's house COMBINED. It had THREE seperate decks, one with two fantastic hammocks and everywhere you looked was a view to die for. Yes, it's intimate - there's no door to the shower area, and a curtain provides the door to the bathroom, but if you wanted a Marriot or some all-inclusive boring hotel then why even leave the Cancun "Hotel Zone"? Zamas (and all the other Cabana joints like it in Tulum) are low tech, quiet, totally relaxing.
We tried several restaurants on "Cabana row" (each resort seems to have it's own small bar / restaurant that it operates) and we were pretty sure that Zamas took first place. It's such an amazingly picturesque location, the music is great, the food is fresh. I mean FRESH, like you watch the fisherman arrive in their boat in the morning and you order it that night for dinner. Does it get any fresher than that? We NEVER got sick, everything was washed in purified water and was totally healthy. My gal is a vegetarian and was thrilled with all the veggie friendly options. The dudes serving were friendly and spoke english. If you needed attention, you just asked a guy when he walked by, or you got off your butt, wandered into the bar and PRESTO, the problem was solved. It's a small resort with a small staff, and the place can get busy. But hey, it comes with the turf.
If you want a five star, uber high end, "americanized" resort where hordes of staff magically appear every seven seconds to grant your every wish while singing and dancing, well, perhaps Zamas (or Tulum) isn't the place for you. Perhaps you'd be better suited to one of the soul-less all inclusive joints in Cancun. If you want a real Mexican experience and are even remotely flexible, Zamas might just be the ticket.
The only thing preventing me from giving Zamas an "excellent" rating were the beds - the room was great, but my GOD was the bed firm. I guess I'm a whimp, because I got a better sleep in the hammock!
Hope this helps! Have fun at Zamas!
