I write this review more reluctant than ever to leave Tulum after watching another perfect sunrise. The private beach area in front of Hotel Encantada is prepared before the sun rises. They rake the sand, setup the chairs and cushions, and scan the area for trash and debris. As my fiancé and I walk the beach we took notice that our hotel is the only one who goes to such great lengths.
I will rewind to the moment we arrived at around 4:50 on a weekday. The receptionist Maria was sincerely sweet, helpful, and inviting. After we setup in our lovely room, a room with NO "ICK" factor whatsoever, we came downstairs for our first drink. Happy hour ended at 5pm but Maria considered our late arrival and gave us the 2 for 1. Hungry, we ordered the rolled tacos and were subsequently in food heaven. Every meal we had here in the next 4 days was remarkably well prepared, presented with pride, and devoured with joy.
Almost pressuring ourselves to explore more of Tulum, we decided to fight our urges at times and do what you should do on vacation; relax. From sunrise to sunset we parked ourselves in the beach chairs, ordered drinks from with Carlos or Jose, read, talked, and played in the warm water. Hours passed and there was no regard for the depth of our laziness. It was perfect.
The room was never more then a 30 second walk away and if you chose to stray from the beach and sit on your porch it was equally memorable. Soft music playing, waves crashing, a view of the water from every room, and a bowl or water to remove the sand from your feet. The room itself had a lot of pluses; a huge and insanely comfortable bed that didn't squeak, reading lamps by the pillows, hot water, multiple fans, a large jug of purified water (refilled daily), a small safe, candles, and standard toiletries. Ordering food or drinks and having them brought to your room or balcony was very standard. Curtains in the room were light but enough to block the visibility of those on the outside.
Beach and room covered; now the staff. Carlos and Jose (bartenders/waiters), Maria and Ishmail (hosts), and Lina (the manager) exceeded out lofty expectations in every way. The staff operates as a family and as a team. It was always pleasant interacting with then more then simply when making requests for things. These people were the pinnacle of what made this hotel one of the finest we have ever been too. Their personalities are have one commonplace; pleasing their guests / friends... And they largely succeeded.
It is hard to not have a great time in such a wonderful city, but the hotel for us and many travelers can be the determining factor in making a vacation memorable or not. Hotel Encantada and it's staff gave us a time we will cherish forever. The experience had been amazing.
Lastly, as I write this, we're being served coffee and fruit an hour and a half earlier then when the kitchen opens because Ismail knew we had an early flight. It's the little things...
