We stayed in the oceanfront cabana #22 in connection with an intimacy retreat group trip. The property is stunning, simple, and RIGHT ON THE OCEAN. It was wonderful to have our own standalone cabin with privacy, with the theraputic swish of ocean waves just outside 24/7. The cabins have full plumbing, but no electricity although the staff leaves ample large candles in glass containers which are refreshed daily.

With respect to location, its walkable distance along the beach to a kiteboarding center, an Austrailian-Mexican fusion restaurant, and even the Tulum Mayan ruins. The value was tremendous. Further, its a 4-mile bike ride or 10-min taxista ride to downtown Tulum. Only gripe is the on-site restaurant is very average- mostly good only for beers and guacamole/chips! Enjoy!

We arrived on Saturday for our honey moon expecting rustic, romantic - well it was definately rustic, to say the least. But it was awesome. Yes, there were mosquitos, yes there are no conventional walls so ofcourse there are gonna be cute little lizards on the cieling but if you have an ounce of common sense, you'll be expecting this. The restaurant is over priced but the bar is great, the wait staff comes right down the beach and serves your corona and guacamole and are always friendly. The cleaning staff comes daily. There IS hot water, but DO NOT drink it. Every one was nice, everything was good and clean. Although next time we might do something with solid walls and electricity, we had a great time and definately recommend a vacation like this atleast once in your lifetime. It was the kind of experience that changes your mind in ways you would never expect.

The service was very good, everyone very polite. Although the food is good, there´s not much variety at the restaurant (if you want to eat there all your stay), and it´s a bit expensive. The room the nicest view of the sea and it wasn´t very warm at all, but.... it needs painting and maintenance in small details, such as the horrible plastics covering the outter walls of the cabana (I guess they´re meant to protect from the breeze and wind). Of course there are no ammenities AT ALL, because it´s not that kind of "hotel". I loved the peace and atmosphere at the hotel, as we were mostly couples. It´s the perfect romantic getaway, but you have to be conscious about that there ´s no electricity and it´s a bit hard to get used to it (specially at night when you´re trying to look for something or taking a shower). The water from the sink and shower is not sweet nor salty, so it is strange. If you´re used to super hotels, you should have on your mind that even if the place is very beautiful, it is not a regular hotel. It is just a small cabana with cement floor, and rustic toilet, but at night you´ll enjoy the waves sound as in no other place and the bed has a mosquito net around, making it very romantic. The yoga classes are good. The beach is very nice but itps a bit hard to enjoy swimming because there are a lot of plants in the sea near the shore. Also consider it is a nude optional beach, so you ´ll be surrounded by naked or topless people, which I don´t mind, but maybe you do.

As an avid traveler, and devoted tripadvisor researcher, you must be careful about the negative comments you read, such as the one below.

My group and I had the pleasure to experience Cabanas Copal on June 13, 2009, for our Mayan Cosmic Wedding Ceremony, reception, and leisure. Everything about this hidden gem is amazing. I'm a very shrewd consumer, enjoy the finer things in life, and am also eclectic and appreciate nature and rustic ventures - you will find all of this here.

When we arrived the day before our event we were very pleased with everything. It is very quiet, the people are very kind (guests & staff), the grounds were well maintained, the scenery is breathtaking, the azul ocean just beautiful, and you can feel the spiritual energy of positive vibes flowing.

Our ceremony was hands down more than we could have asked for and expected. The staff was extremly attentive, the food was phenomenal, the waitstaff exceeded our expectations, and the management...well I just can't say enough great things without being too overwhelming.

The cabanas were clean, the spa and environment very holistic, the resort is very rustic, and if you're looking for that bohemian, leave the real world behind feeling then I HIGHLY recommend Cabanas Copal. Just typing this review makes me want to book our next vacation as soon as possible.

As for all the negative reviews below, everythign is subjective, and people can be in a certain frame of mind of negativity to write something negative. I'm almost insulted that anyone couldn't think nothing but great from this rustic hidden gem.

p.s. Maria Lidia is quite the wedding coordinator, leave your worries behind and allow her to work with you. She handled every detail to perfection.

We imagined this place would allow us to get closer to nature, but that was a mistake. We thought we knew what we were getting into : an eco resort without electricity and sea water but I don’t think you can ever really prepare yourself to what you discover when arriving : when we arrived and were taken to our room it really hit us I We choose the cabana (the most expensive one .....very expensive for what you get!) on the top of the cliff to spend a special moment with my husband but the rooms are not what you can describe. It is just kind of like camping. Everything is corroded and the plexiglass used for the windows was so scratched and there was so much space between the walls! The rooms were dirty. There were not 2 curtains of the same size. It was hard to sleep with the wind blowing through our thatched hut all night.
We thought that if you stay in a eco resort like the one we had been before, everything will be ecological… you could be surprised : plastic cushion so old and dirty that you hesitate to seat on it and as a matter of nature respect, what can we say about the empty beer bottles (we found approximately 10/12 empty bottles around our cabana). Forget if you think the management will fix the hotel for the mosquito netting, walls, windows…. If you had the chance to ask something to one manager during your stay, you will just have a smile in return and a look as if you are stupid or they do not understand. This place needs a new management capable of training its staff and maintaining the property.
What can we say about the restaurant : there is electricity …of course, the music was so loud that we couldn't speak during breakfast. This type of music is not what you expect in an eco resort!
The food was not good, expensive comparing to other restaurants in Mexico. The staff in the restaurant was not friendly at all (just waiting for the tip….).
This is not a place I would return again ! Never but I still dream of an eco cabana resort where e you are close to the nature but it is not.
