I recently returned from a week long stay at Cabanas Copal, my 13th consecutive year to visit either Copal or Azulik. For the past several years I have stayed in Copal's Cabana #28, AKA, the Casita. I love this unit. It's slightly larger than, and served as the prototype for, the upscale sister hotel- "Azulik" which is next door. While it does not have all the amenities found at Azulik, like two hanging beds in addition to the 'normal' king size, and has cement floors instead of renewable hardwoods, I actually prefer the Casita to the units of Azulik. As a single traveler, it just fits my needs better. Couples will also like it very much.
Not having the aforementioned outdoor hanging bed, a hammock filled my needs quite readily and one was provided upon my request. The Casita sports an outdoor soaking tub just like the Azulik units but provides more privacy due to the lush greenery that grows around the unit.
This year a pathway has been constructed from the parking lot directly to the Copal units, eliminating the need to walk way out of your way through the Azulik reception area in order to get to the Copal units. Nice touch.
The staff, as always, was warm and helpful and will go out of their way to assist you.
So, if you hear that Cabanas Copal is no longer in business, I can assure you that they are, despite a major downsizing over the past year. The owners of the land (Papaya Playa) on which sat Cabanas Copal refused to renew the long term lease and took over all but eight units of the original Copal, which is now administered through the Azulik office.
Questions keep coming up about the Clothing Optional status of the beach. Apparently the official policy of Papaya Playa is now "no nudity," but I saw little evidence of that being enforced, especially on the part of the beach that once fronted the 'old' Cabanas Copal. It seemed to be pretty much tolerated and many guests of both genders were taking advantage of it. You can access the beach from Copal and Azulik via the stairway that runs between Villas #2 and #3 at Azulik.
If you're on the fence about booking at Copal, give it a try. I'm sure I'll be back for year #14!
