“Pricey, but good.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2014

I knew that heading over to the pricey hotel area of Tulum beach would be expensive, so there were no surprises there. I was feeling a bit isolated in my camping area with no electricity and decided to splurge. That being said, it was a nice experience. There was a little cuban band, nice lighting, and good service. I ordered a vegetarian burrito and it was truly delicious.
I'm not sure how the prices at Mateo's compare with other restaurants in the hotel area as I was on a backpacking trip and generally avoided places where one must pay tourist prices.

“Yum!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2014

Ate here twice. Once for a quick breakfast of granola, yogurt and fruit which was not only beautiful but yummy and then for lunch. Grilled fish tacos with mango salsa were perfect. Don't miss this place!

“Great fish tacos”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2014

We ate here 3 times during a 4 stay, I think that pretty sums up our opinon of Mateo's. They claim to have the world's best fish tacos - I haven't sampled widely enough to know how true that is, but they are absolutely delicious.

Prices are very reasonable (especially for Tulum). The setting is also nice, open air seating with partial views over the sea. Service is good and the food comes quickly.

“Good local, friendly place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2014 via mobile

Mateo's serves a good burger and tacos. The margarita's are excellent - highly recommend the celery and Serrano version - very hot and cool! This is a good place for a relaxed simple meal.

“Fantastic food, drinks, and atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2014

I went to Mateo's several times during my stay in Tulum. It has a great atmosphere with it's thatched-roofs and tiki torches. The food is authentic (get the fish tacos) and the drink selection is great. The prices do reflect the clientele, so you'll still pay American prices, but I couldn't think of a better place to spend a few hours relaxing at the end of the day.
