We had a really pleasurable stay at Playa Azul in Tulum. We booked only a couple of weeks prior to arrival and therefore the only room available was room 22 which is one of their largest. We were told it used to be their spa (before they moved it beach side) so with that in mind, it's super spacious the private outdoor area is massive. Separate seating area, a bath that could comfortably take 6, an outdoor (hot and cold water) shower which was fed through large seashells and side by side hammocks in another under cover area. Bamboo walls all around and the canopy of the palm trees giving total privacy. Inside was yet another sitting area a built in closet and the bed (surrounded by mosquito nets) and then through to a large bathroom again with a seashell shower which is novel. This room is completely separate. Noone above or below you.
This room is set back from the beach, so no sea views, but it compensates with sheer size. The only thing worth mentioning with it being set back from the beach is that you don't get so much of the cooling sea breeze. It was pretty hot and steamy when we were there for our 3 day visit, and getting back to the room felt 10deg hotter than down on the beach. There is a ceiling fan, but my only comment would be that the (necessary) mosquito net kills quite a bit of the fans effectiveness. A simple solution would be an addition pedestal fan that you could put at the end of bed at night to keep the air moving about. Despite being right next to the reception, wifi is not possible anywhere in the room or out in the private garden. Had to go down to the restaurant/bar area or be on the beach for wifi if that's a deal breaker for you. But this wasn't really a problem for us.
We had great food in the restaurant and the staff here and in the bar were particularly good. Fantastic views of course from the restaurant and we didn't eat anything off their menu that we didn't thoroughly enjoy. Their breakfast concept I thought was a great idea. Your room includes a continental breakfast and that includes lovely fresh fruit, fresh orange juice, coffee/tea and your choice of 4 or 5 options such as French toast or pancakes or croissant and jam etc. Which meant you could vary your breakfast each morning to keep it interesting.
As an aside, when staying in the Tulum area, drop into Mateo's down the road for they bajan style fish tacos and burritos which were exceptional!
Anyway, back to Playa Azul. There were plenty of sun lounges and umbrellas on the beach for everyone staying, so no need to get up early to save a spot. Beach bar staff were attentive bringing ice cold drinks at a moments notice. Even bringing around complentary watermelon at one point which is a nice touch. After walking the full stretch of the beach, this hotel probably has the nicest section in the whole strip. The staff keep it kept very well, out there every morning raking up leaves and any seaweed that might have washed up overnight to make it some of the best sand I've ever walked on.
All in all a very pleasant stay, my only suggestion would be an additional fan for that particular room.
